Hey Scot: Another great video...I always print a packing slip, this gives the buyer lots of information also if the package ever gets lost or opened by mistake, the packing slip will tell whoever where it came from and where it was going. I will also use the packing slip to handwrite a "Thank You" note on it, which I have received many good comments just for the thank you note part alone. Helpful Hint: Like you I use a lot of Padded Flat Rate Envelopes (PFRE) > Hint > the free USPS 1096L Priority Box will fit inside the PFRE so anything that fits in the box can be shipped in a PFRE. Also, you can get your shipping labels for free if you have a UPS account, just call in and ask and they will supply all the shipping labels you need. Until next time...Che Ching love to hear that sound.

I used to always include a packing slip, but eventually realized there is an ideal middle ground. I include a packing slip for more valuable items ($100+) in case the package is lost or the shipping label is damaged. I don't bother with items of small value. The cost in toner/paper really adds up and is more than I ever saved with a recovered package. As One Foot Flipper once said, a packing slip might remind someone to return an item they are not completely happy with.

Hey Scott. Thank you for making such good instructional videos on eBay reselling. I just started a side hustle online reselling with my 6 year old son to teach him about sales and e-commerce in general. It’s been a steep learning curve for both of us mostly me lol. But, great news is we just sold our first item on eBay! It was a book about bushcraft. Pre owned but like new. Picked it up for a dollar at a garage sale resold it for $13 with free shipping to a customer in AZ. I live in NY so I was really glad to learn about USPS Media Mail which knocked shipping down to $5.38 from regular which was $16 ish. My son was super excited that we made our first sale and praise the lord we actually made about $5 bucks on it. Included a nice hand written note to the buyer explaining that they are our first customer, and thanking them for their purchase. Hopefully they will leave us some good feedback on eBay. Well… thats my little story. Hopefully more to come soon. Cheers!

@TheChaChingKing no, it comes dry in a roll. You can buy the dispenser that dampens it, but cutting to length and misting with water works just as well. It's super strong. I got it just to test for around $10 for 450'. I'm hoping to find it cheaper next time. Thanks!

I love your videos. I haven't sold anything on eBay in 20+ years, but want to start again, and your videos are so helpful. I do have a video suggestion, that I think would help sellers: Could you please cover how to make a combined shipping policy, and why you should do so? As an avid eBay collector of a particular type of item, if I see an item I'm interested in, I'll check the sellers other items, and very often will buy multiple items, particularly if they have a clearly stated combined shipping policy. I can say for sure, sellers with no policy will lose sales. It can be a hassle having to message a seller about combined shipping; things are so much smoother for buyers if sellers if this policy is clearly stated. I haven't seen a video about this particular subject, and I think it would be helpful. Thanks for your helpful videos.
@TheChaChingKing23 сағат бұрын
I will look at it. I have SO few items that would ever need a combined shipping policy. I'm not sure I'd ever have an example to use it with. If I sold cards or games, it might be easier for me.

Usually, the dimensions that are printed on the outside of the box are actually the internal dimensions. If you measure the outside of the box before you ship, you’ll find that the outside dimensions are often a bit larger than the printed dimensions. If you don’t adjust for that you can get dinged by the carrier.

For those of you just starting out...ALWAYS measure your box/package because if it says something ON the box, it's usually off by 1/2 inch or so. After I measure mine, I usually add another inch anyway. Most of the time it doesn't affect the cost of shipping anyway. It might with larger boxes though, like a 12 x12 x9 etc.

Thank you for the video! I appreciate the additional info about shipping, It helps me be confident in doing it correctly. It feels very weird as a noob seller, to see eBay recommend a USPS priority mail for 91$-355$! Compared to when I weighed and sized the item ( adding a couple oz at least to be safe) and am shown shipping could be 14$-67$! Heck even when I put the info in myself, the USPS priority expected shipping is only 48$-$100! The take away that I've concluded is to put in package info to find a reasonable priced USPS shipping, then I try and find a lowest cost option. Just so the customer has the power to pick shipping. For the first package and currently only package I've sold ( Fresh noob remember! ) I did two wraps crossing the longest seam on the box with tape in addition to the long tape covering the main seam. After this video I now wonder If can trust in one round of tape after all! Seeing about reduced costs for shipping labels by making a UPS account is something I hope to remember if I continue to try and sell. Thanks again and have a lovely day!

I saw comments about being careful about the sizes of the boxes because they're usually off. This might help new people the box sizes are not off those are the inside measurements of the boxes you have to measure the outside of the box and adjust accordingly. That was a single thing that used to cost me the most money back in the olden days till I figured out the hard way by losing money. Basically, if your item is a certain size and weighs 3 oz or less, and meets other criteria, you can ship for $1.25. Have you ever shipped using this method, and if so, can you give us the guidelines you use for shipping this way? The instructions on eBay are very confusing on how to ship. Something else I do is include a handling charge of (usually) $2 which, more or less, covers the cost of packing materials. I know it’s controversial, but I figure people are primarily focused on initial price first, quality, then shipping cost. And eBay incorporates the handling fee directly into total shipping cost. I use different handling fees for different shipping categories. I like to know my expenses are covered. I should also mention I use calculated shipping, as it’s simpler and, more importantly, the only practical option based on where I live.
@TheChaChingKing22 сағат бұрын
I don't think it should be controversial. If it's working for you, them keep it up. I haven't done it, but I wouldn't be against trying it, either.

Mark, I use calculated shipping also. How do you tell ebay to add a handling charge? Thanks
@marklewis357921 минут бұрын
@@greggdrennan Hi Gregg, You should find the option right below where you select your preferred shipping methods. In fact, if you do shipping for within your country as well as international shipping, you should have the ability to set a different handling fee for both. I use shipping policies (I have something like 4 or 5), so I set up a fee based on the policy and the cost typically associated with it. For example, for very light items that use a poly bag, I have a $1 handling fee. For items that use a box 18" or greater, I use $4 because the box cost is much higher than say a 6" square. Keep in mind that I'm in Canada and box pricing is likely much higher. I have a shipping policy for fragrances that is $4, mostly because it's a lot of extra work and material following government guidelines for packaging hazardous material. Anyway, the point is, ebay gives the ability to fine tune your shipping preferences as you see fit.

If calculated shipping is working for you, don't stop! Calculated shipping is frowned on by some because it can be more expensive for the customer if you don't share the discount. On the other hand, it's a heck of a lot safer cost-wise. You're much less likely to take a big loss on shipping. I actually think it's pretty wise for people new to tis to use calculated shipping to protect their bottom line until they are confident they know what it'll cost to ship something. Just because I make a video showing how I do it, never assume it's automatically the best way or the only way. It's just the way I do it. You might already be doing something that works better for you.

It needs the size and weight of the item exactly like the carrier will see it. I'll make a dedicated video for this soon.

I think you forgot to put the link in for your new channel. I could be wrong and just not seeing it but I’ve looked twice ha ha 😅😂

Oh! I put it at the end of the video, but i need to put it into the description

How do you put in measurements for a polymailer? It’s only width and length.
@TheChaChingKing22 сағат бұрын
I usually just guestimate the height of the item. BUT, I've had a lot of questions about weights and measurements. I'm planning a video to help with that, too.

Thank you for another great vid. I noticed that you’re no longer using the Accutek scale. Was there an issue with it or did you just want to upgrade? Thanks!
@TheChaChingKing22 сағат бұрын
Nope, no issue at all. We made a second listing station for Melody downstairs. So, I just needed a second scale. The Accutek is still going strong. That thing is incredible.

Great video, one question. I’m tracking all my supplies through a spreadsheet, boxes, tissue paper, bubble wrap, etc. The idea I have is get a CPA to do my taxes next year. I thought supplies could be considered a right off. For the record I’m just asking your opinion, understand you are not a CPA.
@TheChaChingKing22 сағат бұрын
Like any business, the supplies you use that are necessary to conduct business are usually deductible. :-) Definitely not a CPA. LOL But, I do recommend you check out @notyourdadscpa here on KZbin. He's a CPA and a reseller. So, he makes very helpful videos and understands what we do.

Hello, Great Video. I'm starting selling on ebay, but I've some doubts about what address could or should I use on my selling account. In some ebay forums are people saying that ebay address must match with bank account address, so PO BOX isn't an option. So, could you give me, or anyone here, a hint about what to do? thank in advance

Do you have flat rate shipping, free shipping, or calculated shipping? Thx! ❤
@jeffmoen8563Күн бұрын
So when you do the shipping part and you adjust size or weight and price is cheaper. Since buyer already paid does seller just make a little extra profit?
@TheChaChingKing22 сағат бұрын
They could. Just don't forget that the label isn't the only cost with shipping. You have supplies and fees on top of the label itself. If I'm WAY off, I usually refund some of the shipping to the buyer, though.

A padded flat rate envelop[e is $11.20 as of 1/4/25

When you buy your label through eBay, you'll get the commercial rate. So, it's probably $9.80 now.

I sold an item for $435 a few weeks ago and noticed that the shipping eBay charged the customer didn’t include the money for the extra insurance. Is there a way to have eBay include the additional insurance fees based on the selling price? Thanks again for the great videos!

Question. When I purchase a label from ebay and the buyer paid a higher price for that shipping what happens to that extra $ the customer paid. Do they get money back adjusted?
@TheChaChingKing22 сағат бұрын
No, whatever you charged goes to you. If it's a big difference, I usually send the buyer a refund for some of the shipping.
@joannadestefano691120 сағат бұрын
@@TheChaChingKing thank you for the fast response. I usually measure and weight good so the difference usually is not much. I'm still learning and your videos are great for learning. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge.

If that package weighs 2.2 lbs rounding all way up to 3 lbs is kinda screwing the buyer. Rounding up is entering 2.3 or 2.4.
@wnytrashtrucksКүн бұрын
no it's not. USPS goes by the pound. If you put 2 pounds 4 oz or 3 pounds it is the same price.

Wrong. I ship items daily, many times one ounce will make a difference in shipping costs. @wnytrashtrucks
@TheChaChingKing22 сағат бұрын
It really doesn't impact the buyer because I charged a flat rate. What the buyer paid for the label doesn't change regardless of what I enter. What I pay changes, though. From 2-4 pounds costs the same for me through eBay.
@TheChaChingKing22 сағат бұрын
This is what is does for me through eBay, too. It's on the commercial rate scale.

I appreciate you and your, often good, advice. But, if I may, I thought I'd point out a few things that I disagree with... The most common (and quite perplexing) mistake I see is people not padding the underside of an item. Granted, I suspect the packaged item you shipped in this video may have already had sufficient cushioning built in - but I assume your intent was to show how to package something correctly. I don't understand the use of plastic as filler. I would understand maybe wrapping the item in a layer of bubble wrap for cushioning (if required), but filler should be paper. It's way cheaper and more environmentally friendly. I realize shipping charges are way different in the US, compared to Canada, but I imagine UPS or FedEx are the same (don’t round up), so I'm surprised you recommend this as a practice. There's absolutely no benefit to rounding up if you enter the correct weight. I'd say you're likely losing money more often than you think (if you ever use UPS or FedEx). In Canada, the difference of 100 g or 1 cm can *sometimes* increase the cost by $10-$15 (perhaps more?). No - that's not an exaggeration. It happens to me more than I’d like, and I end up re-packaging in order to save that money. So, when I tape a box shut, I pull in the sides to be flush against the flaps. It can mean the difference between a profit and losing money. There's a cut-off line (weight and dimensional weight) in each price change that I imagine must also apply to US pricing. You cross over to that next size/weight and you pay the more expensive price (obviously not with flat rate). Rain or humidity will affect the cardboard before it affects even a partially stuck strip of good quality tape (3M, Staples, etc), if ever. EBay tape being the most common exception - in which case, your spoon idea would be a good practice to use regularly (or, better still, nobody should be using crappy eBay tape).
@johnathin0061892Күн бұрын
Pulling the sides tight flush with the flaps is an excellent point. Put the tape on TIGHT and push those sides flush with the flaps to avoid overages due to dimensions, especially anything approaching a cubic foot (in the US). Go around the box at least twice with the tape, one lengthwise and once width wise. No need to flatten tape if it is put on tight and firm.
@TheChaChingKing22 сағат бұрын
For pre-padded items like the one I was shipping, padding beneath the item wasn't necessary. I use paper often. I was just out. But I love packing paper, too. As far as package sizing through the US post office, anything less than one cubic foot is all the same price (approximately equal to 0.0283168466 cubic meters). Well, assuming no side is longer than 22". A side longer than that can run the price way up...like WAY up. But, under a cubic foot, it really doesn't matter.

You certainly can. And, I have when my printer was on the fritz. But, if I print my own label, I don't have to wait at the post office to get them printed. It's faster for me to be able to just drop them off.

I went back. They appear to be working fine. It could be that your browser doesn't like "deep links." Amazon recommended using deep links a while back. It's a direct link that doesn't require someone to then log into their account...it's kind of automatic. At least, that is the way I understand it. It could have created an issue for you, though.

Do you have to print that packing label at home or can it be printed at the post office?

You can get it printed at the post office. You can download a QR that the post office can print from. No problem.
