In this Halloween how to I’m going to show you how to make an easy fake brick wall using joint compound and tape. Sometimes you may need a section of brick in a Halloween project, but what if it’s only a small section and you don’t want to buy or make an entire sheet of brick panelling?
Not into Halloween? This technique is an easy and affordable way to make any wall look like old brick and help freshen up your home decor.

I let it set for 30 minutes before removing the tape. It prevents the smudging and moving. I did this for a back splash. Holding up after 10 years.

I put filler (americans say mud I think?) on an internal brick in my room to get a smooth surface but only an inch needed to be smooth. I’ve been trying to figure out how to make the rest of the brick look like a brick again for ages!! I’ve watched so many brick fixing DIY channels but its all like “replace the brick.” Finally found my answer on a Halloween fake brick video 😂

That is a interesting process. It looks really good. I had planned on covering my cemetery columns with faux brick and stucco, but figured it out to be way too expensive to use the foam like I wanted. I might be able to afford to do it with this process. Thank you for sharing. Your videos are always top notch.

Also for the mordor in the brick. I've heard of people painting clear glue in the lines then brushing baby powder onto the brick and blowing off the access. Gives it a very natural look. Then once you age it it doesnt look so white.

Awesome tutorial as usual. I was thinking this would be a great way to do my cemetery columns. Do you think it would hold up to rain? Would a coat of Dry Loc on the top help with weather proofing? Thanks so much for all of your work! It's greatly appreciated.
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps 3 жыл бұрын
Yes to both, assuming the joint compound is completely dry before any additional coating is applied. As an added layer of protection you could spray it with Thompson’s water seal.

Long story short, I’m trying to do my bedroom in a dungeon theme (parents called my room growing up 😜). I’m going for the stone wall effect and any tips for achieving this realistically would be appreciated. I’ve already made a set of handcuffs for the “torture “ wall and a set of skeleton sconces for above my bed-so it’s not coming along too bad. But honestly the gray walls need the stone effect before anything else. Thanks in advance! 😊👍🏻

Hi. I'm trying to make a Dracula's Castle tomb wall in my living room on a very cheap budget. Will this work on anything. Like foam core board? Or Fluted plastic? Or wood only?
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps 3 жыл бұрын
I’d stick to non porous surfaces since there’s moisture in the joint compound. If you’re using plastic be sure to scrape up the surface so it’s got something to bite into.

Can this be used for set pieces that will be outdoors? Does the paint protect the joint compound from water?
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps 3 жыл бұрын
I've never tested it, but would assume that the acrylic paint will protect it and I would consider an additional layer of something like Thompson's Water Seal just to be safe.
@marikiemarie7622

I have this on my back splash in my kitchen. I put 3 coats of cabniet epoxy based paint and a top layer of semi gloss polyurethane. Its going on 9 years and holding up excellent. No problems around the sink or stove. There is a uv paint for outdoors that would be perfect for outside things. I will be using that when I do my outdoor kitchen area

you were good at 5:46 he what is joint compound in the UK?
@VanOaksProps

Great question. Unfortunately I’m not sure. It’s what you would use to blend them seams of newly installed walls or to fill cracks. Not sure if that helps any.

Wow. That looks SO good! Awesome stuff, Derek. How would you compare this to the foam brick method? In terms of cost, time, realism, etc?
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jen! I’d say this is faster, more accessible, and cheaper than foam. On realism, it’s a tough call. They both can look pretty real if done well. I think the biggest drawback on the joint compound version is thickness. Much easier to do really dimensional brick with foam.
