I have replaced the Coolant Temp Gauge Sender Sensor on an E46 without removing the Intake Manifold. Taking out the upper part of the "firewall" / Lower Cabin Air Filter Housing gave me the room I needed to swing a wrench. 18mm socket combined with 2 universals and a long extension let me get a torque wrench on it. Solved the intermittent gauge reading ultra high (hot) I was having.

Thanks so much! 5/2/2020 and you save me a lot of money! I just replace the part with my brother in 3 hours. We took our time. My BMW X3 2006 starts having issues with temp, from being cold to abruptly hot! Thanks

My E39 is pegging when cold starting randomly. I can also hear the ecu making a stuttering and the OBD will stop talking. Replaced the double engine coolant switch as seen in the video. OBD tells me the temperature is fine. I did get a P0118 engine coolant temperature sensor 1 circuit high. Unplugged the double temperature switch and it will start. Sometimes it won’t. Might try the thermostat.

I had this problem the other week, it’s the battery, my car would still have power and would turn on at my house but die whenever I got to where I was going, low battery caused the ignition to question the key so it won’t start even if you just did and had power, hope you figured it out

That is a heating element in the thermostat. It forces the stat open depending on engine temperature. So the issue would not be related to that, assuming it is a wahler thermostat. If you take that out, you might screw the wax inside the thermostat and prevent it from opening and closing properly.
@eastpantherbenz8 жыл бұрын
Those thermostats are electronically controlled, but they do fail open and throw a P0128 code. They also have a temp sensor in the lower radiator hose.

The component on the thermostat housing is actually not a temperature sensor. It is an electric heater. See this video at 1:28, kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZfXgnV-eJiNhrs

Hmm, my E53’s temperature gauge goes completely past the red as soon as I start it but after a minute or so, goes all the way down. Also, when the car has been running it doesn’t even go the the first mark on the temp gauge. No codes for it though.

I have a 2000 bmw 528i and I noticed that where the thermostat housing connects to the engine after I run it for two minutes I can see coolant starting to surface, then at about 5-7 minutes on the lower left corner, it starts the steam out as if it were a teapot?? Also my temp gauge in the car reads normal. Any ideas?

I have the 2000 bmw e39 525i and I have the same problem. I was thinking to replace only the sensor. My sensor have a O ring rubber gasket and I think that is where the leak is coming from. I will try to replace that without taking the hole thermostat off and I know this will be very hard. Main olso is a bit different than one in this video because the sensor have a metal clamp and is leaking from there or the O ring rubber gasket from the sensor which is inside. I was looking on Amazon and in the UK is about £8 = $12. Search on Google " thermostat sensor bmw e39 " or you already solve the problem? Please let me know thank you.

Yes, you can. The unit shown in the video is just a shell with all the internal parts cancelled.

Cancel no. Remove and cause your car to run incorrectly? Yes. But only if you feel you know more about how the engine should be running than the BMW engineers that spent millions designing the engine. I'm sure the googling you did and the youtube videos you have watched have made you a better expert than them.

Hey man, I'm really interested in buying this bmw 335i which I how I found your channel. I'm a junior and college and realllllly want this car. I don't a mechanical background at all. You obviously have extensive wisdom in the e46 department so is there any advice you could give me. Also, this is the link for the car: www.dealsonwheelsllc.com/2002_BMW_3%20Series_Lacombe_LA_260594376.veh
@NathansBMWWorkshop8 жыл бұрын
+Dominic Pizzitolo I see alot of little problems in the pics, dented front fender, front bumper broken on lower passenger side, front license plate trim missing, rear tow hook cover missing, headliner falling down and the rear seats are dry, i would say the carpets are wet from the sunroof drains off, you need to start the car from cold with the radiator cap off, if coolant blows out walk away from it, also the trans fluid needs to be changed if it has not been already, $3900 is too much for a 325i , the 323i i have here is a 5 speed with the sport package and i think its worth $2700 with 170k miles , i did a complete video on buying a e46 ill send you the link. A low milage car does by no means imply a better car, alot of times its the opposite.
+Nathan's DIY Garage I've watched both videos, I was just curious to see your take on that specific vehicle. And it's listed at $3500. Are the bumper, headliner and fender something I can look past if coolant doesn't blow out?
@NathansBMWWorkshop8 жыл бұрын
I you are ok with the cosmetics, i would just make sure the coolant dont blow out, make sure it dont smoke after being driven, and quiz them about when the last time the trans fluid was changed (im sure they wont know), take your foot and roll back on the front tires and see if there is any movement, make sure the temp gauge stays half way and does not go over, look on the ground under the car for any coolant leaks.
