Hi! I have learned so much by viewing your videos, thank you!! But right now I was working in a SketchUp project, and I have a question: is there a way to place a button or even better a shortcut that can allow me to quickly switch between using INCHES to using MM? I work with Italian kitchens and every time i have to deal with inches and millimeters, so I have to keep changing and switching it 30 times per job. Thank you in advance.

Yes, why do you guys always do demos using a completely different set of tools that's available to someone who is just using a trial version of the product. Wouldn't it make more sense to do a demo with the tools available on the trial version of the product so people can decipher weather or not to buy the product or not?

Finally a practical tutorial! The only thing I would mention is to slow down just a little and make your menu selections more visible. I've been trying to use Sketchup among others trying to do exactly what you've demonstrated. I'll review this several times and try it again. Thanks

This is freaking amazing. This is the kind of thing I imagined sketchup was built for. All the coolness of working on the construction site without the lunch truck and heavy ambient swearing.

Everyone needs to watch this video series before even thing about downloading and installing my plugins. So many users don't even understand the basics of SketchUp and how to model things properly (ie. groups etc...). Excellent video and instruction.

nice quick tutorial for layout. Wish framers today would learn how to lay out stud walls & floors. One correction you may want to consider is to keep spacing 16" O/C layout at & under windows vs placing a cripple in the middle of the window for convenience.

Question: having trouble with the “pier pads” at time 5:04… think im missing how to drag rectangle from center of the bottom of sleeper beam as well as how to use arrow key to lock to blue axis.. going step by step but think im missing somethin! Great Instructor, great video and fun project!! Thank you!
@derekbarrington667
@derekbarrington667 2 жыл бұрын
One thing... The window framing needs to continue the 16" on center above and below the opening.. Otherwise sheet goods like plywood and drywall won't end on a stud in that area.
@StefanoVerugi
@StefanoVerugi Жыл бұрын
good point, if I am not mistaken you also need an element at the corner (like the California type) to support the inside drywall

I like the deviation into architecture fundamentals. PLugins like madeeks do this essentially automatically - correct? Is madeek the best for this?
@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 3 жыл бұрын
Something like that - Medeek probably makes the most detailed realistic framing right now. You can do something similar with Profile Builder but it wouldn't add the extra detail for openings

More importantly the plugins allow you parametrically model which means you can insert windows and doors and then modify them ad infinitum. If you manually model something then if you make changes to the design it will require a good bit of work to re-adjust things. Plugins are all about saving you time with your modeling and not having to work as hard.

Thanks Justin Geis for your time and effort for creating these tutoring videos. I learn lots from it. I have a question about the foundation. I see you use lots of 2x6 plus plywood. i am wondering why do not use concrete. Price may be the same but last much longer and would not worry about animals to chew in. I am not sure. So, want to confirm with you. You know more than I do.
@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 3 жыл бұрын
Mostly because it's a video about creating 3d modeled framing, not about how to actually build a shed. Concrete slabs are great if you want to keep everything on grade. If it's up above grade for moisture reasons or other reasons, concrete won't work. Please do not try to build a shed in real life based on an example model I create for SketchUp

Hi, I'm learning to model for videogames environment. Is there any course you sell/share where I can learn what I need to model in order to achieve a believable building? I'm not an architect, I just need to model something that LOOKS good and belieavable. E.G.: if I model a wooden house I need to show some structural details, I can't just make an hollow roof, BUT I don't need to model what's underneath the floor. Sorry if I can't explain it in a different way.

I've enrolled in his online course called "The Sketchup Essentials" and it has been well worth it. It teaches Sketchup modeling, creating plans in LayOut, and even using rendering software to create super realistic models.

This is a Sketchup tutorial, not a framing tutorial, but ... first & last joists/studs/rafters are a half-width (3/4") closer to the next, bringing the "centers" inline with the edge of the building.

@@pranayblue standards for "dimensional lumber" have been established in the United states as less than "rough" lumber. What Justin refers to as a 2x4 is planed and dried to the dimensions he states. I applaud you for asking for clarification. 2x6=1.5"x5.5"; 2x8=1.5"x7.25"; 2x10=1.5"x9.25";2x12=1.5"x11.25". Larger sizes shrink more proportionally accounting for the loss of an additional quarter of an inch. Further more if you measure with a micrometer, you will likely find further discrepancies. I was taught in architecture school to never dimension anything less than 1/4" on a plan. Furniture and fine crafted woodworking is more precise. I invite others to comment or correct what I have stated here to assist Fares and Pranay,

Weird comment. Obviously don't build off of a 3D modeling tutorial designed to teach you how to use a 3D modeling software. Feel free to model your framing however you'd like.

@@Thesketchupessentials sure, I guess I'm just a stickler for when people give tutorials on something that it's all shown correct. Yes the framing techniques aren't what's on display but for people who know how framing works, when it's done incorrectly it stands out. If that makes sense.
