How does engobe differ from slip?

Engobe and slip are similar in that they are primarily clay. Slips are applied to ware that has not been dried or fired yet. The main difference is that engobes will often have other ingredients to help bond at different temperatures and materials like gums which help the ease of application. Engobes are often designed to fit on bisque ware by reducing the amount of raw clay and substituting calcined clay which reduces the shrinkage for the fit.

Do you add more water to create decorative slip?

Yes, that is the simplest way to make slip to decorate with. Add a metallic oxide or commercial stain for color. To apply slip thicker for decoration also add a drop or two of a defloculant like sodium silicate to allow for less water in the mix for less shrinkage and cracking.
