What did I do wrong if my caramel never firmed up, it stayed gooey and sticky and spread all over

It’s hard to say without knowing your process. But here are a few things I can guess. Did you use the same Kraft caramels? Did you measure the ingredients according to the recipe? Or you may live in or have a warm/humid kitchen. Refrigerating the caramel & after assembly may help too.
