ethel newberry I have the very old Betty Crocker cookbook, it has an oil pie crust recipe similar to this with water instead of milk. I’m lazy so I mix the ingredients right in the pie plate with my fingers and press it into shape. So no rolling and no bowl to wash.

I can't believe it! This is the EXACT recipe I've been using my whole life, taught to me by my mother, who used it her whole life, taught to her by her mother. I didn't know there was another way to make pie crust until I was waaaay into adulthood! LOL For those still undecided, I promise this crust lives up to the hype, and I've never had anything but compliments. The only difference is I use cling wrap to roll it out, it's more flexible than wax paper. Actually, if I'm only making one crust I usually don't even bother rolling it out, I just dump it in the pie plate and press it down with my hands. Easy and delicious! Two things: if you are making a blind crust, be sure to poke some holes in the bottom before baking, so it doesn't bubble up. Also, I have to disagree with her claim that you can't overwork this dough. You CAN overwork it, and the more you work it the tougher it can get. If you want light, melt-in-your-mouth crust, stop mixing as soon as all the flour is incorporated. Don't knead it, don't handle the dough any more than necessary., and you will be very pleased with the result.

I love buttery crust so can I substitute the oil with butter?
@scarlettvale6174 жыл бұрын
@@starszasiostra6410 I have no idea, I’ve never done it. Seems like that much butter would be really rich. Also butter solidifies and oil doesn’t, so it will definitely affect the end result. Have you made this recipe yet? You might find the taste “buttery” enough. If you try it, let me know how it works out!

Thank you so much for putting the oil and milk pie crust on youtube. As a child in a large family, my Mama use to make pies using the oil and milk pie crust and roll the dough out between 2 sheets of wax paper. And she made lots of pies for the family. I never ask her for the measurements and has not been able to make a crust using oil and milk because I didn't know the measurements. She passed and I didn't have the recipe for the crust; I figured some of her sisters would know. I was surprised and saddened to find out they had no idea how to make this crust so the recipe was lost. I searched the webb and many many cookbooks but couldn't find that precious recipe. So I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting the milk and oil crust on KZbin.

I have been making pie crust with oil for over 50 years. If you do not have milk water works equally well. If you will take a wet cloth and wet your work surface before you put down your first piece of wax paper it will stay put when you roll your crust. After it is rolled peel off your top sheet of wax paper. Then pick up the crust by the corners and lay it in your dish with the paper on top. If you need to reposition the crust it is easy to do by picking it up by the corners of the paper and moving it. And then you peel off the paper. I hope these tips born of many years of practice might help someone. Also when you wet your work surface you will not have a problem of the bottom sheet of paper wrinkling.
@Handsthatcook5 жыл бұрын
Hi Diana, really good advice you've given and I did wet my work surface and place the wax paper on it....however the lights dry the wet surface before I get full advantage of the technique. This is one of the disadvantages of having to use lights above to make the video more visible for all of you, but that is a great idea and advantage to using the water. TFW God Bless, Linda

This looks awesome. I will try it for sure. Thanks!! Wish I knew what a “little more than a half cup” is. I’m wondering because I want to half the recipe again so that I’m not futsing with too small of crust. I’ve never understood a 2 cups of flour pie recipe when another cup or even half cup would make it so much easier. You can make a cinnamon and sugar treat with the extra or throw it out. it wouldn’t even be a Nickel’s worth of dough. Thoughts?
@Handsthatcook5 жыл бұрын
Hi B For some reason I find this skimpy for a 2 crust pie but go ahead and half it....also, a little more than half a cup is just above the 1/2 cup mark, about the width of the 1/2 cup marker on your cup. Want to make it a 3 cup dough?....add the extra cup of flour, 1/4 cup more oil and 1/8 cup of milk. Good talking to you B!!! God Bless, Linda

My mama used to use the wax paper method for rolling out pie crust with no flour and I do, too. Also, she used to flute her crusts by simply pinching it between her thumb and forefinger, which I also do. It makes a nice sort of angled flute. Her crusts didn't taste as good as yours, though. Could you use melted and cooled shortening? For richness could you use heavy cream for the milk?

Thank you for an easy pie crust video. I never had good luck with them. Also love your videos on the electric pressure cooker. My husband bought one for me a few days ago. Gonna try it out tomorrow for the first time. Anxious to try your 'sausage & cabbage' recipe! We also love soft tender cabbage! So, Thank You' again. Happy Holidays ! Peggy in KY

Hi Peggy. You will love using this crust recipe. There will be no surprises when you bake it and the pressure cooker recipes take all the long wait out of dinner and delivers a really tender meat. TFW and taking the time to comment. God Bless, Linda

Hi it’s sue again. Made your pastry today. It didn’t work out well the first time as I used English 500 grams. When I measured 2 cups it is 250 grms. Taste is brilliant. I will be making pies and flans, and quiches quite a lot as it’s springtime with summer approaching. Hope you have more receipes for me to follow xx

I'm sorry I'm no good at changing to English ingredients but I know you can get them online. So glad you've figured it out yourself and you'll be baking up a storm soon!! TFW and God bless

You are amazing!!!!! I adore this video!!!! Great job on your crust!! When I first started making my own pie crusts the hardest thing for me was learning they will not be perfect you will have to patch it grom time to time you will have to start over from time to time its all about practice the more you make the easier it becomes but even the worst looking crust still tastes amazing and then time to time you get lucky and get a crust that looks beautiful its best to try different recipes and figure out what works best for you!!! Places that have higer humidity may nit require so much water verses places that are dryer may require a little more I did try this crust out and it worked well my family didnt even notice i had changed anything so it does work it is easy and it tastes wonderful!!!!! Have a blessed day id love to see you make a blackberry cobbler!!!!! Thank you for this video!!

It's funny you talked about Lemon Meringue Pie. My Mom's favorite was Lemon Meringue Pie. In fact... My Mom & Dad met each other over a Lemon Meringue Pie. My Dad AND Grandad worked at the same Baking Factory together back then. My Mom would go down some days to walk her Dad back home. My Dad really liked my Mom so he asked my Grandad, "can I walk with you & your daughter"? Well, Grandad said Yes. Next thing my Dad & Mom began dating & would share a Lemon Meringue Pie as they got to know one-another. Next thing, my Dad asked my Grandpa & then my Mom if he could marry her. Everyone said YES, and that's how my older sister & my twin sister came about....Lemon Meringue Pie!

Hi Allan, If you're going to make a 2 crust pie you'll have to double this recipe but this is a good recipe and you won't be disappointed in it. Let me know what you think....you have a lot of baking skills so I know you'll do fine. Merry Christmas to you and your family!!! Love and friendship, Linda

I don't believe in the 50s, there was such a thing as pre-made, but I could be mistaken. My mother, grandmother, and aunts, had always baked from scratch as far as I have witnessed. Thanks for this great video. I'm not a butcher, baker, candlestick-maker, or cook:)

Mary....Happy Thanksgiving!! I made an apple pie last night using this recipe. When I watched the original video making this pie crust she was making 8" pies.....hardly anyone makes 8" pies these days. Usually 9" pies are made by most and I found this too skimpy for a 2 crust 9" pie so this is how I increased it: 3 cups flour, 1-1/4 tsp. salt, 3/4 cups oil and 1/4 + 1/8 cups milk.....just a heads up if you also found this a little shy of what you need for a 2 crust pie....have a great day tomorrow!! TFW God Bless, Linda

I want to pre bake this crust for a homemade chocolate meringue pie but do not know what temperature it should be set on? 350 for 45 minutes seems a long time for an empty crust?
@Handsthatcook4 жыл бұрын
To blind bake a crust, preheat oven to 375 and bake for about 10 minutes or until it reaches the desired shade you want. I hope this helps. TFW God bless!!
