Hi Gary. That’s a beautiful little bowl! I was fortunate to meet a cabinet maker who was cleaning out his shop and getting rid of a lot of wood he never seemed to use. One of those was purpleheart. I ended up taking away 40 or 50 pounds of it in all different shapes and sizes. Some are ends of 3 by 8 planks. I’ve been making kitchen mallets. Laminating hard maple , oak and then purple heart on the ends. Every timer a family member sees mine, I have to make another! Cheers, Rick

Thank you Rick. I came across a plank 2 inch thick piece of Purple Heart at a garage sale years ago. It was 2 inch thick by 12 inches wide and almost 7 feet long. I like your idea of the kitchen mallets. I am sure will not make an electric guitar body out of it LOL Gary

Purple heart is beautiful wood, I agree with you about it being very hard. My husband makes cutting boards and often uses strips of purple heart incorporated with other woods. He usually gives me the scraps to make bottle stoppers, or he glues up scrap bowl blanks for me. Gonna have to try the middle step finish from Ack's. Tom's products are the only finishing products I use other than paste wax once in a while. The Chaytoyance is fantastic. Have a great weekend!❤

It was so dark at the garage sale I got it probably 5 years ago they thought it was Black Walnut. I ended up getting it even though it was too heavy for Walnut. Was not till I cut a piece did I know it was purple heart. Next two will be easy as well. If sinus issue clears up I am picking beast with a good chance of it not working out. But what the heck. Very nice bowl, Gary. Great chatoyancy. I appreciated seeing the finish comparisons. I recently turned a friend on to shellac as a sanding sealer. He was all about straight to tung oil after sanding then buffing with a cloth system. He couldn't figure out why I had a better shine but wouldn't try my methods (nearly identical to yours). Now, he's hooked on shellac, meanwhile I'm enjoying the more satin finish of an oil, lately. Good video and I hope you're well.

Wow, that wood is lovely! The chatoyance on the outside adds to the attractiveness. The shine provided by the new finish is very nice. I like that it contributes a glow that is more subtle than the glass-like finish that lacquer sometimes produces. (With that said, lacquer looks good too, but I really like the shine that you have given this piece. You mentioned possibly using it as a bowl to hold candy: a bowl like this deserves to have the best candy served in it. Thank you for sharing your work with us.

As you said, your purpleheart bowl is a simple and beautiful project. The Ack's Middle Step Finish looks like a good idea, and I look forward to trying it. Thanks for the video.

Great project Gary. I love the way that it turned out. And easy projects are always good, especially if you have limited time. You can still come up with something satisfying, as you show us here. I like the new finish, and I may try it out. Thank you for sharing. See you next week.

Thank you Donald. Came from a long plank that has been in my shop for probably 6 years. Was dry when I got it. The person that had it did wood carving. Thanks for watching, Gary

Now all you need is a big bag of M&Ms for your purple heart bowl. I think all the colors of those small pieces of candy will bring out the color of the wood. Nice one, Gary!! Must still be cool up in Oregon since you are wearing a long sleeve sweat shirt. Not too bad here either, but Houston south of us got badly clobbered yesterday.

Thank you John. For sure M&M's would look great in there. Well last week we were in the 90's But back in the 60's for a bit Sure felt nice laying in the backyard. A lot hotter now that those 3 big trees are gone. One fell over and the 2 were cut down.😢. Thanks for watching, Gary

Very cool Gary. I love purple heart but I don't love how it gets dark over time. I feel like I should've used walnut. Tom's abrasive paste is really good stuff. I have bought it several times however recently I have discovered Howard Wax it All. Using 4 ot steel wool it is really nice and much , much cheaper. Have a great week.

Thank you Rick. Yes about the only way I have kept it purple is to not have it near any window light. You are right though. If you have Walnut I say turn it. I have not seen the Howard Wax It All. I will look into that. Thanks for watching, Gary

I know Purple Heart is expensive, so it would have been nice to create another blank. Great job Gary.

Yes it is expensive. This piece came from a large board I bought at a garage sale. It is 12 inches wide and 6 1/2 feet long and 2 inches thick. I got a really good deal on it, There are lots of blanks left if I want to use it like this. Could make a lot of pens but I do not turn pens. Thanks for watching, Gary

I have to agree that simple is fun. I have purple heart all in pen blank type of stuff but I use it for finials and that type of thing. However when I turn it it always turns brown and for that reason I'm not too fond of it. I know all the techniques on bring out the purple again and I have limited success with them. You take purple heart and put your tools to it and it stays purple through out. Hmm-I must be doing something wrong. I'll have to play around with it some more. Nice piece Gary. BTW I use Acks products and didn't know that had that new finish. Might have to check that our

Hello, your videos are practical, to the point and excellent. Thank you for that. Am asking for your advice-bowl turned from Sapele. Watco danish oil-natural-applied. Friend recommended spraying with lacquer -several coats. Your thoughts? Also, do you ever apply spray lacquer over ACKs wood polish (both sanding and then polishing paste wax). Any advice you good provide would be appreciated. Thanks, dave watkin
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 ай бұрын
Thank David I appreciate your comments. With Sapele I like to spray lacquer on the bare wood building up multiple layers. I then will use the Acks abrasive paste for a final polish. I also use wipe on poly the same way. I do not use Danish oil under those finishes. Hope that helps, Gary

I love turning purple hear but haven't done it in a while. I love the color when freshly turned but hate the fact that sooner or later it will turn brownish. Wish there-was a way to preserve the purple color. Do you think your fluorescent light treatment will help? Nice job on the bowl.
