Many of Martin Yan’s episodes are memorable, particularly encountering Jacques Pépin. While Julia Child may be the earliest cooking show aired on PBS, I can’t recall any other Chinese cooking shows that have the earliest possible year of which Americans first got exposed to home Chinese cooking on TV which in turn made KQED the place for producing many cooking shows like Martin Yan and Jacques Pépin. As the next generation rolls on, I’m very sure that the next person after Martin Yan will follow in his footsteps in telling about his/her modern Chinese cooking. But after watching Martin Yan’s episodes, this brings me back memories dating back to when KQED had a limited schedule of PBS Kids programming (before it was actually called “PBS Kids”). When KQED didn’t air any children’s programming, I got exposed to cooking on TV that include Martin Yan’s “Yan Can Cook”, the Jacques Pépin series, and especially America’s Test Kitchen. There were no digital channels back then; not even a 24-hour channel dedicated to a topic or category. Also memorable growing up as a kid are not just watching Martin Yan and Jacques Pépin, but Johanne Weir’s 1st TV series on KQED (I sadly can’t purchase any videos of that) and any KQED-presented cooking shows such as Chef Jose Andres. I think KQED has a lot of potential of producing more cooking shows for PBS viewers nationwide in the future because there are a lot of cooking styles and variations like Martin Yan’s Chinese cooking out there. I’m hoping that one day, more ethnic cuisines such as British, Danish, German, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Thai, and Vietnamese will follow in the footsteps of both Martin Yan and/or Jacques Pépin.

Thanks for being such a loyal viewer. We're listening and always thinking about new programming so thank you for the feedback. Martin Yan was the first Chinese Food host on American television.

@@kqed there’s simply too much history of me watching many cooking-related PBS shows either over the air, on cable, and even the classics on KZbin! America’s Test Kitchen, however, has it’s own channel despite watching it on KQED and any sub channels (KQED+, etc.). I only hope that there is someone that will be able to show off their cooking styles at the studios of KQED, not just French (Jacques Pépin) and Chinese (Martin Yan)!

It seems, however, that as of April 18, 2022, KQED has run out of Yan Can Cook shows.

I watched this show when I was a kid like other kids watched cartoons. My father had the pleasure of taking classes from Martin Yan and I have all of his hand written recipes with notes. Thank you for everything. From a loyal fan of 40 yrs.

I've loved sushi since I was about 8 years old. It started when my family would sometimes go to Fresh Choice. They had tofu and my grandma told me it tasted liked anything it was with and that sounded pretty cool. Eventually I had better experiences outside of Fresh Choice, RIP.
