There are not "thousands" of free designs out there. There are *millions*. My 3D printer has been one of the most useful tools I've ever added to my arsenal. If you're a DIY'er, you *need* a 3D printer. The ability to make a custom plastic part is incredible.

one huge thing you missed out on are router templates. Being able to design your own templates and print them out accurately is a god send. It opens up a whole world of things you can make. That and other types of tooling are great. Not tools but just things that can help you out with other tools. Need a 90degree adapter for your sander, pretty sure you can find and 3D print one for just about any sander you want. No more wonky edges!!!
@JasonGrissom

Oh absolutely. My VERY 1st experience with 3D prints actually with my buddies about 7 or 8 years ago. He had a 3D printer and printed me a template that had the shape of an actual butterfly for me to use for template routing butterfly/bowtie inlays. Was awesome! Yeah I think you really are limited just by your imagination/creativity. I probably failed to mentiom them because now with a CNC I usually just use that for inlay work. But again. GREAT point! Thanks!

My best print for the home shop was PVC pipe connectors. Did not need them for liquids, just to build a frame. The local store was 3.50 each and I needed about 2 dozen. Instead I 3D printed " X " type where the pipe slides over for roughly 0.08 each.
@conorstewart2214
@conorstewart2214 Жыл бұрын
Just for information you can get PVC filament, although I would not recommend it. It produces nasty fumes when melted and apparently isn’t great to work with. It may be useful though if you absolutely need PVC, maybe for water pipes or if you need to use some kind of PVC glue on your pipes.
@RoseKindred
@RoseKindred Жыл бұрын
@@conorstewart2214 Thank you for the suggestion and warning. Thankfully I did not need the pipe connectors to hold or transport water though. These were simple "T" and "Y" connectors but instead of holes they used X beams to fit inside to connect the PVC. Simple PLA+ worked for them. Considering the huge difference I figured I would post it so other people will see the savings in a "TOY" machine.

I worked at a MakerSpace and used the 3D printers there more often than I thought I would. Usually it was to make some sort of jig or something to help my woodworking. I made paint/finish triangles and right angle brackets a lot. Such a fun job. I was able to get my son involved and he loved the 3D printers. Now that he’s 15 he’s been saving for his own. THe MakerSpace is a little too far for us to travel to often. But picking the right one… was something I wasn’t sure about. We had Ultimakers and those are way out of the price range. Glad you recommended one.

@@JasonGrissom hahaha, funny. On weekends my family go to the trailer park, a neighbour son was 4 at the time and was crying because he forgot one of his favourite toy. I had my iPad and was working in CAD. Since we are all like family at the trailer park, I sat him down and designed his toy. (Figurine) and modified it with his direction so the toy suits his wishes, the next weekend we returned and I had that 3D toy printed. He is now 5 and no longer had that toy. Heck yeah! I honestly haven't used my CNC in probably a year but I still think it's a great tool to have in the shop. I don't sale any items really, if I did. You bet your butt that CNC would be rippin all day long. I initially got it for the same reason you got a 3D printer. I had a kid on the way and realized I wouldn't have that much time to be in the shop messin about. With the CNC I use to just design in the house, go throw some wood on the CNC, and just monitor on a security camera I had setup. Automation has taken over most of the world, why not the shop too. At least a little bit. 🤷‍♂️😂

One tip which might or might not help. Tho amazing tools a 3D printer is best not put inside your workshop. All the dust is going to give you a lot of problems! Best to put it somewhere inside where it's hopefully in a pretty decent environment controlled room away from a lot of drafts.

@@boomerangfreak Great point! Drafts are terrible for these open air type printers. I keep mine in my studio and have actually recently put them in a tent to allow for better fume extraction and insulation for the printer. Again. Thank you so much for sharing. This was a great point.

@@WorkshopGreg yeah. Everyone should feel free to prioritize safety as they see fit. Personally in my VOC testing, the VOCs generated while running 2 3D printers for ~6 hours in an enclosed studio VS 24 hours of no printing and after venting the room for 2 hours was within margin of error. BUT I decided to go with the tent and a 8 inch inline duct fan that exhaust out of the studio because of my resin printer. More specifically the isopropyl alcohol I use to clean prints. The VOCs were off the charts and seeing how my toddler spends time out there with me sometimes it became a MUST for me. But again. I encourage everyone to do their own research and come to thier own decisions. Happy to hear that you are keeping it in your mind though. (Plus ABS and Nylon are stinky). 😂

Thats what I believe. My 1st printer was an Ender 3. It can produce an awesome print, it may take awhile for it to print AND you will spend A LOT of time dialing it in and maintaining it but it is fairly inexpensive. OR you can spend 600-700 USD and get a Bambu Lab P1S that you just hit "print" and 98% of the time it spits out a perfect print. I think you land somewhere in between with the anycubic Kobra 2 printers. I have 2 and love em.

I agree with you on every point, I would just add, manage your expectations. Environment affects 3D printing, my settings for printing are different in summer than they are in winter because the works space I use. So for the 3D printing newbie, just be patient, try a few things and don’t give up, once you figure out your printer setting that fits your environment you are golden. @@f.kieranfinney457 oh man. This could be a video in itself. I'm not exactly sure what the cost per board foot breakdown would be as lumber prices are kind of all over the place right now. As far as using the CNC to make parts, you are correct. Aluminum is a much better material for recycling. However, a CNC being a subtractive manufacturing machine means a lot of material would be "wasted". Unless a really good mechanism for capturing all the chips and sending those to recycling is implemented. With 3D printing...if the model is made correctly the 1st time it should last for a very long time. Hopefully limiting the impact to the environment. I truly do appreciate the intellectual conversation. Lots to think about.

@@JasonGrissom it’s pretty simple to catch the chips. All big companies do it and send it to recycling by the pound. I have 3D printed hose adapters in my shop. They’re junk but there’s currently no alternative. Shop strength requires nylon reinforcement, IMO, which I think takes a more expensive printer and material. Printed plastics aren’t accurate and strong enough for jigs and are wasteful for most things. But if you already have one for other purposes it makes sense to use it. Be interesting to see how long it takes to design from scratch and print, then use test for durability vs wood. I’d find it interesting. But probably just me! Enjoy your channel.

There is PLA filament that has real wood fibers, like walnut, bamboo, ebony. You can sand it and stain it.

Great point Felix! I have seen these but havent had a chance to try them. Prints I've seen with them look awesome though! As soon as I get a hardened nozzle I'm going to give em a go!

Love it! Now I have to go get my 3D printer out of a moving box and try to remember how to put the thing back together. 😂

Heck yeah!! I once did that with an ender 3. Good thing about it was the printer was never really quite right the 1st go around so I took more time and did a bit more research the 2nd time putting it together. Guess it helps if the "new car" smell is gone. Out of curiousity was there something particular you want to print??

All the organization! My shop is a massive disaster and I need to get it together. Specifically the wall organizer and sander paper organizer.

Nice! Yeah. Something I didnt really get into and I probably should have is the amount of time you free up by having a 3d printer work on those things instead of you. Like it really can free up time to do other stuff.
