I’ll confess: I don’t like shrimp toast. But I happened to watch this today and remembered I had some frozen shrimp I needed to use, so I thought, why not? My partner and one child loves them, so I thought I’d make them and pretend to eat one while encouraging them to eat the remainder. That’s not what happened, though. Oh my goodness, these are so delicious! We had to draw straws for the last triangle. My partner won, sadly. The ingredients form a light and puffy mousse that’s almost soufflé-like, and they could not be easier to make. I didn’t have any ground pork, so I minced about one-third of a skinless chicken breast and added it to the processor with the rest of the ingredients. It worked very well. Thank you for a great recipe. This is a keeper for sure. It’s probably quicker to make these than it is to order delivery - and you get to tailor the recipe according to your own preferences.

I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed this! To be honest I never really enjoyed shrimp toasts I've had in restaurants. They don't put enough shrimp on top so it's gets leathery, the oil they fry it in is old so it tastes funky and greasy, and it's usually starting to go stale by the time it comes to your table. The first time I had this and enjoyed it was when my wife made it for me. I guess that means she's converted 2 former shrimp toast haters😆

So nicely golden and crispy; homemade is definitely the way to go with these. The ginger must give them a lovely background flavour too. I wonder why it is that sweet chilli sauce goes with so many things. We even add it to sweet potato mash...👍
@NoRecipes2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! In this case I think it goes so well because the sweetness is a nice contrast to the savory shrimp. I've never tried it in mashed sweet potatoes, but that makes a lot of sense. One of my favorite ways to use it is as a dipping sauce for French fries along with sour cream.

Shrimp toast was my absolute favorite growing up...even had it at The Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong. Will definitely try this easier version. Every time I've made it, it was super greasy. I do miss the the top covered with sesame seeds. I would serve mine with homemade hot chili oil with it. Now I'm drooling and love the serving plate you used for presentation!
@NoRecipes2 жыл бұрын
Wow, thanks for sharing! As for greasiness, there are 2 things 1) The oil needs to be the right temperature (if it's too cold there won't be enough steam escaping the bread, and it will soak into it like a sponge 2) The order in which it's fried is important because you want to get the bread side onto the paper towels while it's still hot enough that the escaping steam is forcing out the oil.

Chervil is a credible substitute for cilantro. It tastes like a cross between tarragon and parsley. You pretty much have to grow it yourself, but it’s the only way I’m going to get an idea of what cilantro tastes like. ❤️❤️ Love your channel!
@NoRecipes2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lenore, chervil is pretty widely available here in Japan but it doesn't taste much like cilantro (more like anise or tarragon). I'm not sure where you're located, but cilantro is the Spanish name, and it goes by many other names depending on what country you're in. Other common names include coriander, Chinese parsley, dhania, wansoy, pakchi, xiang cai, etc.

I haven't tried shrimp toast because I heard it was oily. This doesn't look it at all! I'll have to try it!
@NoRecipes2 жыл бұрын
Shrimp toast in restaurants is often greasy because the oil they're using is not fresh, and they don't take care in the the way they fry and drain it. As long as your oil temperature right, and you finish it off by frying the bread side down and drain the bread side on paper towels immediately, it shouldn't be any greasier than other fried foods.

Hi Jamila, you can leave it out. It's mainly there to add a little fat to the shrimp to keep it moist, and it also adds a bit of flavor. Ground chicken will work, but you'll want to use one with a fair amount of fat in it otherwise I don't think it will be worth adding.

Is there an alternative to the pork in this recipe as for I am severely allergic and really want to try it but sadly allergic to the pork
@NoRecipes2 жыл бұрын
Hi Parker, the pork is there to add fat and flavor. You can substitute with ground chicken as long as it has about 20% fat, or you can omit it. The shrimp mousse won't be quite as moist, and won't have quite as much flavor, but it will still be good.

I don't know your local takeout shop so I can't speak to their shrimp toast, but from my experience, I've haven't really enjoyed the ones I've gotten from restaurants (even if I like their other food). I think the issue is that most places don't put very much shrimp on top so it gets kind tough, and these really need to be eaten right out of the fryer or they tend to get stale and chewy instead of crispy.
