In the first studio I worked for we had a little Auratone "cube" speaker that was great for this kind of work. But the FabFilter method works just as well. It seems that when you cut out the extremes you can focus in on the most important elements and then work out how the extreme ends are being handled later. It seems more efficient then trying to get everything to work together all at once.

This is definitely a very useful video. Thank you for the knowledge, this def does help on getting the mix much cleaner. Good stuff man.

The frequencies you are choosing are basically and almost near the range of the famous aura tones speakers. Thats why they say if you can make a mix sound good on those then your mix will translate well on other systems. Now, to have a better sense of whats going on on the bass freqs...make a low pass around 120hz

so basically, this is just listening to the mids (where the bulk of information is) and making them sit well. just like NS10s would force you to work, from what I've heard.But they probably make it easier because only if you get it spot-on, they stop sounding very shit. Forcing you to produce translateable mixes/masters by tortuing your ears.

very interesting thank you but there's something I need to know : how can you work on your mix with a beanie covering your ears, impossible for me
@jevvf32465 жыл бұрын
Cuts out the highs. It's why Lo-Fi producers tape pillows to their ears when mixing.

Would be interesting to see how you’d approach a live recording for bringing out the right transients and make a decent sounding track. E.g. would it be best to have several copies on different tracks split up in different frequency bands (brick wall...?) for treating them all differently and gluing it all together on the master channel. Or would you tackle the mix as a whole? Without an audio repair software I find it incredibly difficult to balance it all. (Can’t justify buying expensive iZotope RX as an hobbyist.)

Regarding general high pass filtering, I would suggest watching this video by Paul Frindle (developer of SSL consoles and Sony Oxford OXF-R3): kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWSzk3dspNKCfbM

@dawin67105 жыл бұрын
this is a waste of time to to try to polish a turd. You need to start with a good quality samples. e.g layer the the kicks and add an edge by shortening one of the samples and simply roll off all sub basses from all but one of the layer. Trying to for ever twick by ear is unpleasant... ear fatigue etc.., just as the process in your video is unpleasant to watch. It all needs to remain fun for the mix engineer to want to stay in the zone and get stuff done.

Cause god forbid someone mixes music by using their ears.
