My mom was a single parent, and money was usually pretty tight, but she always made everything come together and seem magical for special occasions. For my 9th birthday, she scraped up enough for a strawberry cake mix, icing, and sprinkles. They were marked down and stacked together, like it was meant to be. I remember her worrying over whether it was enough/good enough, and I ended up proclaiming that I loved it so much I wanted the same exact thing next year. I’m 27 now, and it’s become an absolute tradition. Circumstances have changed so much, but my sweet mama still happily makes me my strawberry cake….albeit slightly fancier now lol. Long story short, this video actually brought back so many good memories and gave us a new recipe to try this time 💕🍓

Your mom sounds a lot like mine. She raised three boys on her own and there definitely wasn’t any extra money but she always made the most normal everyday event seem special. Friday’s was always butter pecan ice cream mixed with A&W root beer floats and made my favorite “fresh apple cake” for my birthday and really anytime we all just needed something a little special. Moms are incredibly special!

BTW... if you use strawberries grown in your garden, the cooking time for the reduction will be far less. Those commercially grown strawberry varieties are huge and FULL of water, while most garden varities are smaller, with a much stronger strawberry flavor.

Thanks for mentioning the raspberry juice to give it more color. Now I'll be questioning if anyone's strawberry cake is pure and thoroughly full of strawberries. As a person living with allergies people tend to leave the smallest details out thinking it's harmless and then out comes the EpiPen or death. This is why I can't eat dessert at people's houses. Thanks for your fresh version, much appreciated.

@@umeriu-b1m I can't tell for sure but I think she is talking about how you can use the raspberry juice to color it as opposed to red food coloring. I love the way the cake feels in my mouth!!! One thing Id change tho is the amount of sugar in both the cake and the frosting! Waaaay less sugar for me. I hardly ever leave comments on KZbin videos, but I am compelled to say this: John, thank you so much for sharing your passion for baking with all of us, and even including metric measurements, that means so much and makes things so much easier! I really really REALLY appreciate that!Your recipes are awesome and simple to follow, you explain things wonderfully, and every one of your recipes I've tried so far have turned out great (I've made hot cross buns, cinnamon rolls, peanut butter chocolate bars and most recently, this one). This strawberry cake was a hit at my work when I made it for my boss's birthday! It wasn't strawberry season so I used jam instead, it still tasted amazing, but perhaps a bit sweet for me personally. I did the DIY cake strip method to bake my cakes, and never in my life has any cake I baked come out as perfectly as they did this time. They were moist, flat topped and baked super evenly! I now binge watch all of your videos, not just to learn about baking/cooking, but also because they're so calming and even therapeutic, you have such a wholesome and positive energy that makes me feel so happy 😊 Thanks again for making such lovely content. Hope you and your family are always well, and I look forward to all of your videos to come.

I have known and loved this channel for a long time, but had never tried any of the recipes. A few days ago I was craving for strawberry cake, but it was hard to find one from my country with srawberry in the batter, so when I found this, I decided to try. So, here is how ut went: I didn't want food coloring, so I added the 4 yolks. The color turned nice! Kind of yellowish brown. Anyway. Used vegan milk 'cause that was what I had. My flour absorbs way too much liquid, so the batter was firmer, but got a nice texture after baked. Just because of personal taste, I would reduce the sugar and butter a little bit. Made one batch with a bigger cake pan, so it wasn't as beutiful, but... Thanks for a great recipe John! Always explaining everything perfectly!

So, when you were eating a piece of the cake I was also! I will post some photos on my Instagram and tag you. Thank you for making this video, but I have to say that my cake came out perfect just by following your recipe! Thanks, and hello from Southern Vermont.

I use dehydrated strawberries when I make frosting that I blend first into a powder, works really good too!

I’m not a baker. But had to try this recipe. I love strawberries.
@CatsPajamas232 жыл бұрын
I used to make this, except that I didn't cook the strawberries first. Sometimes I mashed them and added them to the cake, sometimes I pureed them, and once in awhile used strawberry preserves in the filling, frosting or both. The liquid just means that you use thick yogurt or sour cream instead of milk or buttermilk. That frosting is so pretty.🙂

I think i might like your version better as i haaaate the taste of cooked strawberries. His version is basically homemade strawberry jam, and i know for a fact i don't like the taste of it. Do you normally do a full substitution or part milk part yogurt?
@a.s.66852 жыл бұрын
@@lauraeleven7417 "instead" means fully substitute, and I agree it's a good idea. Moreover, if you don't cook the strawberries, there's no need to add food colouring.

You are killing me here, Jon. Strawberry addict. BTW, I saw your Quaker Oats commercial. Well done and I'm looking forward to seeing your rise in the world of creating delicious eats on a national/global stage. Every attempt I have made using your recipes has been spot on. You are my "go to" for any recipe. All my best to you, Brian and the boys. Rock on

Hi! Been a subscriber for a LOOONG time. Made this for my boyfriends birthday today! I love baking and cooking BUT I've never made a cake from scratch. He loved it! It was delicious, light, airy and rich. Never will I ever buy/make boxed cake. Your video and instructions were easy and clear to understand. Thank you! ❤ Going to try carrot cake for my moms next month!

Mine is made and ready for my son’s birthday tomorrow. It looks beautiful. My mixer broke so I had to do it by hand. Fingers crossed! But I made some back-up lemon cupcakes (your recipe) too just in case and I did a taste test - the best cupcakes I’ve ever made! I can’t stop laughing (out loud) at the comment about a gray strawberry cake. Thank you for your fun and informative videos.

My cake turned out great but the color not so much (slightly brownish and slightly pink). I used natural food dye so not sure if that is why. Or maybe I baked too long.

We enjoyed making this. We didn't like the texture of the cake, though. It seems like all homemade cakes come out like this. Just not quite the right texture. The frosting, though - so, so good! I'd definitely make that again! Also, it does make quite a lot of frosting. I think I'd cut the recipe in half when making it again. Thanks for this! I love your show!!

For my husband's birthday I made his Aunt Lois' cherry cake, which is simply amazing. Your butter cream frosting would go very well with it, using cherries instead of strawberries. I'll have to try that next time I make the cake.
