This video shows how to make a gravy using Bittergourd or karela, also known as Pavakkai in Tamil. I have also made a tasty Pudina /Mint rasam which can be enjoyed with rice or even had as a soup!
Ingredients
Bittergourd Gojju
bittergourd/karela 2
Salt
Coriander seeds 1 Tbsp
dry red chillies 2
Grated fresh coconut 1/4 cup
Tamarind small piece
Turmeric powder a pinch
Jaggery a small piece
Hing/asafoetida a pinch
Til /sesame oil 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
curry leaves a few
Pudina/Mint Rasam
Tamarind a small piece
Coriander seeds 1 tbsp
Tuvar dal / pigeon pea lentils 1 tsp
Black pepper 1/2 tsp
Jeera/Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
Dry red chilli 1
Mint / Pudina leaves 2 - 3 tbsp
turmeric powder a small pinch
Salt
Tomato 1 ripe
Cooked tuvar dal 1/4 cup
Ghee 1 tsp
Mustard seeds 1 tsp
hing/asafoetida a pinch

I usually saute thinly cut small pieces of करेला in oil after tempering with mustard and little uraddal when the karelapieces are little cooked I add thick tamarind extract Salt turmericpowder Allow the mixture to boil so that raw smell of tamarind goes Now I add rasampowder। jaggery and allow तो boil further so that a thick gravy is cooked। Last I add little roasted and powdered till। You have taught me the easy tasty method of hagalkai gojju tnx। pudinarasam something very new to try your rasam looks सो tempting to drink itself,

Aunty I like your recipes they are very easy to understand. I also like your cute and simple cookware. Also I highly appreciate the oil content you use as u use according to the amount of recipe. Which at least most of the elderly in house miss and thats not right. Its not just taste but health also important.

Mrs.Geeta normally nobody likes bitter gourd because of it's bitterness. U cook with aromatic masala & make it very special. Rasama too is very delicious. Nice menu

Unique way to cook karela tis way. Also learnt that its called Gojju. I love the way you cooked it Amma. Thanks for bringing to us the treasure trove of vegetarian Indian cooking that we have yet many of us especially the new generation does not know. Thank you Amma and Appa.

Amma why don't you add hing to oil while seasoning. You generally sprinkle directly in a dish.why so

Excellent recipes. Both are different from.usual. so tasty. Thank you Maam for the delicious lunch recipes. Love the little wooden spoon you use to stir the spices while dry roasting. Both recipes Very good for diabetics I think .
