I'm learning to breed crickets for my chooks who love 'em. I'm going to take your ideas into mind and hope they work. I have a few questions / issues I need advice with. 1. ) are carrots a good substitute for oranges? my crickets love them, plus they hold moisture 2. ) how can i discourage crickets laying eggs in their water? their water has a sponge that keeps them from drowning, but they lay eggs in it... will they stop if i add the containers of soil? 3. ) how often do you recommend changing/restocking food & water? i might've missed it in the video if you mentioned it (sorry if i did) Great video though, I'll tell you how it goes

Howdy Crickets will lay anywhere moist unfortunately but give them a rub of dirt and they should use that more. Carrots work fine. Water and food replacement depends on lots of different factors. Obviously replace the water when needed and just make sure any dry food doesn’t get wet and go off. Carrots depending on conditions will probably only last a few days. But it’s best you check each day until get an idea on what works in your setup

I see a lot of people use a heating lamp, is that necessary for this or could you do without?

They need warmth but you don’t have to use a heating lamp. You could use heat cord a heat pad. It depends on the ambient temperature in the room obviously and what temperature fluctuations you get.

I used vermiculite, doesn't get rid of the smell. I have dead crickets everyday. Thought the ones I bought were sexually mature. Out to the 430 still alive about 10 of them are sexually mature.

Obviously there is non-toxic organic clump cat litter as well as toxic cat litter. I keep forgetting that a lot of people don’t have common sense and don’t understand NOT to use toxic products. I will try and update this video when I get time and make it a little bit more user-friendly for people that find it difficult to understand. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.
