Whoever needs to hear this. A great first trekking pole tent is the lanshan 1 or 2. I have a lanshan 1 and I love it.

Great ideas!! The first thing I did was my first aid kit, that was a big one. I just take a few bandaids and a few other things and usually don’t even need them.

Living in Colorado you definitely need an insulated pad. Even in the middle of summer above 10k ft it’s still cold at night.

A good tip I was taught years ago was to unload your pack when you get home. Make two piles 1)What I used 2)What I didn't use. Then, from your 'didn't use' pile move less that half of those items to your 3) I still think I want to carry pile. Write it all down and you are ready for your next adventure. After doing that for a few trips you'll have a much lighter pack.

I’ve learned to review UL items for sale on places like GGG, and watch KZbin videos to get an idea of the range of weights for different items (for example, a fleece that is normal/heavy, lightweight, and ultralight.) Then I use my kitchen scale and weigh different fleece in my closet already, then I pick the lightest weight fleece. It helps drop weight and it’s free. But I’m wearing a fleece that has paint on it from ten years ago, and nothing matches anything else, lol. But I’m warm and comfortable;)

Nitecore NU 25 is an amazing headlamp, and it’s less than $40. Percent modded mine and it weighs one ounce.

Paying attention to packed clothing weight is a big weight saver. Base layers, mid layers, puffy and rain jacket weight will add the pounds really quick. Definitely worth the investment to upgrade those items in my opinion

Outside of blazing heat of summer, my old 3/4 thermarest would always wake up with cold feet. Never would do that again. Agree on clothing. Still trying to break habits learned as a Scout of having backup clothes.

Great Video! I work as a wilderness guide for a gap year program and I am going to send this video to my upcoming years students. (side note: I totally wish I could cut back on my medical kit. Since I'm a WFR and work at a camp I have to bring our full WFR bag on every backpacking trip, but when I'm on personal trips, I always just bring a super small med kit)

I totally agree that shelter is a good first thing to replace. My suggestion to immediately follow that would be switching from a sleeping bag to a quilt. I'm a hammock guy, so when I went from a light-ish synthetic sleeping bag and self-inflating pad to a down top quilt and under quilt I shaved off almost 2 pounds. ...and that was with HG Econ-line quilts. If I'd been able to spring for 950-fill down I'd have shaved off another pound, easy.

My first aid kit has been a self made Altoid tin for a really long time....highly recommend. You can get a good, inexpensive knife that weighs 2-3 oz. (Neck knifes work well for most tasks or a swiss army) but they are heavy. Also I would say lose most of the internal bags and containers as much as you can.

Went on a 4day trip in June and left home the chair, camp shoes, and trekking poles. Had a great trip. Cannot leave home essential gear but when you can leave an item home you save 100% the weight of that item.

I disagree with the ace bandages. You can use that for loads of things; sprained ankle, knee support, wrapping a splint, making an armpit rest on an improvised crutch, general wrap for a ripped pack, light shade for a hangover, wrap your annoying friends mouth shut...

Ditch the chair; bring a sit pad. If I want to sit around at camp, I do it in my hammock or on a pad. No need for a chair. Bonus: use the sit pad as insulation under your legs/feet. This enables you to use a 3/4-length underquilt or (if you're a ground dweller) a shorter sleeping pad. Even more weight saved!

Do y'all not bring sleeping clothes? I'll usually bring a light pair of leggings (heavier in winter) and a long sleeve athletic t shirt. I don't like sleeping in sweaty stuff. Sleeping naked in a sleeping bag didn't work for me unless it was cold enough to not sweat at all since the fabric doesn't wick much moisture. And the oils in your skin reduce the life of the down too.

One thing to remember, 1 litre of water weighs 1 kilo , roughly 2.2 pounds. I usually carry no more than 1 1/2 litres. Every time I see a water source I top off. For that a water bag is perfect because it also can carry non filtered water.

First aid - 1 - I agree blisters are the issue - a little gauze, tape (you need a title duct/gorilla for repair anyway) , antiseptic, maybe new skin, eye drops, a few pain killer pills. BUT 2) bring a trauma compression pad and a tourniquet - just in case -an axe or knife wound. A little avalanche smashed my face once.

100 nights you don't need a lot of first aid. Maybe extra Lucko tape or a roll even.
