As much as I think it’s great to want to feel better and be more aware of what you eat, there is a fine line between awareness and obsession. I only say this because I’ve dealt with an eating disorder for many years and have many friends who have too. Reading labels constantly can do more harm mentally than people think. Balance is the key and every ingredient that you can’t pronounce is not bad.

This is an incredibly important comment and I couldn’t agree more. I thought I’d gotten rid of my decade long eating disorder a few years ago, only to realise I’d simply swapped it for “clean eating”. I still obsessed, just not over calories but over ingredients and clean eating. I was still vilifying food and fuelling my destructive behaviour. It started out with awareness and ended up in illness. It’s really, truly tricky to stay on the right side.
@DC-tv9fj3 жыл бұрын
I think it's sad that we experience pressure or get to a place of obsessing about food. It partially comes from the fact that there are now things in it that we can't pronounce. There was a time (roughly 80-100 years ago, I think) when food was just food. It was only one ingredient or you mixed together a bunch of 1 ingredient items and chemists weren't involved. I can certainly see how it is easy to become obsessive about this or any other thing that has to do with your health. Because, let's face it this world certainly isn't looking out to help you be healthier.

@@endeavouringit and all I’m saying is It doesn’t matter if you like them or not. They grow and protect her hair and she’s beautiful either way. Girls (regardless of color) are usually very insecure about their hair and young girls don’t need people like you adding to those insecurities by saying “I don’t like ....etc” you could have commented that you loved Belle’s hair and literally left It at that. The ending was unnecessary . There is a lot of people who are afraid to even get braids because of opinions from people like you, but braids do so much for their hair . I think it is very important to state that not only are so many store bought items loaded with MANY ingredients, those ingredients are unhealthy, most unable to be pronounced, many are chemicals and are so bad for you. Natural flavoring is one that really "scares" me Also, it is important to note that although your 'one ingredient" pot contained 23 items, they were all REAL, whole food ingredients. Not processed, not chemical based, no preservatives or colors etc. GREAT JOB Sarah, keep up the good work.

Watch your videos all the time, and always enjoy them. This video gave me pause, there is no reason to fear "extra" ingredients. Calcium citrate can also be a supplement, I give it in pill form all the time. Citric acid is in citrus fruits. Salt makes food taste better. Foods in concentrated forms is still the same food. Home cooks use thickeners. I cook from scratch every day and rarely use processed foods but it makes no sense to demonize simple additions to make food last longer and stay stable. Safe canned food is absolutely essential in rural areas such as my state (WV) as it may be a long distance to get to a supermarket. As a result, having a selection of frozen and canned foods available allows people to have a wider variety of food in their home. In order to make sure canned and frozen food stay safe and fresh, additions are needed. There are additives that make me concerned and something needs to be done about heavy metals, but the vast majority of the ingredients in the food you made the meal with are harmless and found in many home cook kitchens.

This is my son's favorite and freezes really well: I use a bag of T.Js Frozen, skinless thighs (Thawed) seasoned with Seasoned Salt, Chili Pwd, Smoked Paprika, Cumin and Ground Pepper. It takes about 2 hours on high in my crock pot. I add a lb of cooked navy beans made with a large diced onion, 5 large cloves of garlic and salt and lots of pepper.(I make these ahead.) ADD 3 cans of ALDI"s "roasted tomatoes" (Don't use Walmart's) and 3 cans of Aldi's diced ortega chilis. Add more chili powder to taste. I also add oregano and let it simmer for about an hour. Top with cheese, sour cream and avocado if any of those are handy. (This only tastes right when using thighs) It is my go-to budget meal. Less additives- lots of lean protein.

You can’t really fault canned and shelf stable things for having preservatives and stabilizers, especially when compared to the fresh or homemade versions. Also, pronunciation doesn’t mean something is bad or good for you or that the ingredient is natural/unnatural. Its’d important to know what the ingredients actually are and why they are being used.
@sarahpowers10153 жыл бұрын
Yeah. A big reason why European foods supposedly look so much healthier with so many "less ingredients" is because EU law doesn't require many of the things to be listed that our FDA does, too. That said, America does have a huge issue where food production is dominated by a handful of conglomerates and that impacts what goes into our food in a negative way. But that's more about how they pump food all our food full of sugar more than anything else IMO. "Clean eating" culture has a ton of misinformation in it, lots of anti-science rhetoric, and siphons off attention away from legitimate problems that American food does have. Not accusing Sarah of doing that, just a comment in general I guess.
@stricknitt01843 жыл бұрын
@@sarahpowers1015 I'm interested what ingrediants you mean, which have to be listed/not have to be listed. But anyhow, you are right, that you need to know, what the ingrediants mean for your diet/body before choosing or skipping them.

Ha! I was gonna say to add salt to the one-ingredient pot for it to taste better. When you’re used to eating stuff with lots of salt it takes a bit to adjust the taste buds to a healthier amount of salt. So even adding salt to the one-ingredient is still better. Just don’t use Morton’s bc they add an anti-caking agent so the salt doesn’t clump.

You can easily make your own chili powder and other spice blends like garam masala, baking spice, and other go to blends your household uses. Once you have your own mix you will never go back to pre made. A low cost blade style coffee grinder works great for making seasoning mixes from whole seed spices. It is worth the time to get whole spices and make your own blends. It is lower cost since so many seasoning mixes have overlapping spices.

A lot of the ingredients you read out are thickeners or preservatives. Plus the colours are there because over time the natural colours fade. Personally if I buy processed foods they are "clean" foods which may or may not be 1 ingredient e.g. chopped tomatoes is tomato juice or sliced peaches in apple juice. A one ingredient food I buy is just packed (bramley) apple slices as I can't stand apple sauce with sugar in it. I just prefer the natural taste of apples but don't always have time to prepare them from scratch.❤
