Really glad Ben didn't get distracted too much and went back to Luigi's Mansion almost immediately after the previous Frame Trap. That game IS fantastic, deserves more recognition and is probably my GOTY. Definitely the most fun I've had playing any game this year, outstanding level design, creativity and exploration, looks stunning...love it.

Frame Trap is amazing. Love breaking the ice and getting the groove going with opening intros; a day in the life of the Allies. Love the Pokemon talk, though I disagree with the sentiment that SwSh is a step up from Sun and Moon. Sun and Moon were small scale, but they told a very focused, impactful story (for me anyway, I know some people weren't hooked like I was). Sun and Moon successfully made Alola with a real sense of place, culture, and history. They also tried replacing gyms with unique trials, added crazy Ultra Beasts, and dropped the "only this special boy can save the universe" story for something smaller and heartfelt. Sword and Shield just feels like it is floundering on the Switch. There is *no* story, the towns are smaller than S/M somehow and most feel lifeless and interchangeable, it's janky as heck, and it's painfully easy with the EXP share you can't turn off. It's a bad game but I'm still having fun with it, because Pokemon is inherently fun.

I'm not sure there's a man alive that loves video games as much as sakurai, he has 2 houses, one just for his video game collection/office, he has every console hooked up 24/7. he has 4 ps4's, all the different xbox ones, and about 100+ controllers. he schedules gaming into his work day which is probably an 80 hour work week, and justifies it as doing research. he does alot of work but he also games a heck of alot.... no one can keep up with that. He's a heck of a guy, with so much personality but feels like an intense life. altho he is self employed as a contractor and he works with his wife, and he earns alot of money and respect so it's hard to say it's a bad life.

@@ashesofaranea Pretty sure he meant the EZA Podcast, where Kyle said people should be embarrassed for complaining and everyone else said that people needed to wait and play it before commenting. Given Kyle's stance here, he just seems defeated and content that Pokemon will forever be a 7 (at least in his mind), which is fair I suppose. Hearing Ben's POV and how much it syncs with my own does make me happy that people are legitimately praising some good ideas in it, but also dogging on how underwhelming a lot of them are in execution.
@felizpanda
@felizpanda 4 жыл бұрын
@@ashesofaranea Sorry, yes I can: I was disappointed with the discussion on the EZA podcast which boiled down to stuff like "everyone hates this game but it still sells a lot" and "I guess everyone wants pokemon to be a cakewalk". The coversation here I liked and it got into some of the nuances of the thing like the fact that pokemon is many things to many people and their complicated feelings about the series. Worth noting that this was recorded before that eza podcast so I guess Kyle and Jones didn't feel the need to elaborate because they knew frametrap was coming. (I'll also edit the original post to clarify)

Felippanda I think you were missing a lot of Kyle's sarcasm from his takes on the podcast. I think that's how he's expressing disappointment in it selling well despite the issues. I love these discussions this week. I wanna bring the Sakurai conversation all the way back around to Pokemon for a minute. Sakurai oozes passion, and like Ben said it's not just for his work but for VIDEO GAMES. It's so apparent every single time that man talks or writes a column that he loves video games with so much of his being. It's inspiring to see someone that passionate about something. I wish, I really really wish, that I felt that same ambition and passion from Pokemon. When Ohmori, and Masuda, or Ishihara get onscreen to talk about Pokemon I just don't see their passion on their faces. I see people talking about a product, not a video game. That's the difference when I watch these people talking. I don't get vibes that it's a craft for them, something to aim higher and higher with. I get the vibes that it's the next product in their line of products. I went back and actually watched EZA's reactions to the first SwSh announcements, with Kyle's bonus react, and he sums it up the exact same way. I just don't see the ambition and I wish so badly that I did because I love Pokemon and it's got so much untapped potential. Okay, sorry, rant over. The discussion just really brought something out in me. Thanks to the three of you if any one of you read this, or if Blood does. Or anyone who reads this.

I just want to add that in Luigi's Mansion, you can change your control mode to "horizontal only", in which you aim the poltergust as if you were playing a shoot 'em up game, and you use the IR sensor on your controller to adjust the height. It's a strangely immersive experience and I highly recommend it.

Something obvious that people forget is that your Internet speed is not the speed of the Internet. I would expect this is why there's such a mixed result with Stadia, even with high speed connections. You are only as fast as the slowest point between you and what you're downloading. This, I think, is why Stadia will not work well outside of major population centres, not a million miles away from their data centres. That and a games lineup which shows little market consideration.

Hmmm I think the FGC chat at the end is missing information. Smash Bros also has the same quality of simple trailers other fighting games get where it just shows the characters fighting, unleashing their smash abilities, and wraps it up. And at the same time, games like SFV also have in depth character videos that go over what their buttons and abilities do and how to the utilize the character/why you would want to pick them, and for what kind of player they are suited for. Literally for every single character prior to their release like the Sakurai video. They're there. But on top of this they're not trying to communicate to the same audience. Even as per the creator of Smash himself, it is not a competitive fighting game. It's a party game. This is why he spends 45 minutes to teach his audience how to do basic fighting game inputs. That stream was phenomenal though and watching it with Damiani was a treat. Also, don't trust Mike Ross lol He is an unreliable narrator due to his overt manbaby emotional qualities that we love him for. It's what made Excellent Adventures and then Capcom Pro Talk after so endlessly entertaining for us all. But he constantly contradicts himself. I'll never forget in particular how much he shat on people to leave him alone, and then shat on everybody again for not wishing him a happy birthday moments later. You have to wonder, when Capcom told him they don't need him or his show, do you think they just randomly walked up to him one day and said it just to say it, or did he start some emotional bullshit("You guys NEED me!!") so that they felt the need to respond in such a manner? Just something to think about. I wish we still had Excellent Adventures and CPT, but I think Mike did this shit to himself like he always does. And the fans had to suffer for it. Ben is also right about the fans' reaction to SF3 and Capcom having to add familiar faces in the later iterations. Every new Street Fighter has been met with fan backlash actually by the previous gen. Alpha was hated by the Super Turbo players. 3 was reviled by Alpha fans. IV was disliked by....pretty much every previous entry's fans(FADC Fighter). And now the Ultra IV community smashes on SFV all day long like it's their jobs they've never had. Bottom line is....Third Strike is the greatest fighting game of all time. I'm out!

Kyle, "this game is bad because it's not like I want it to be" is possibly the coldest take in existence. That said, a lot of the criticism you guys had is stuff I agree with on a fundamental level. There are so many instances where it feels like Sword and Shield ALMOST reaches utter excellence, only to fall short. To me, it feels like the thing that is stopping Gamefreak from reaching that excellence is that they simply aren't given the time to. I think it's clear now, more than ever, that Gamefreak is forced to juggle too many projects at once to keep the Pokémon train rolling, and that shows in many areas of Sword and Shield. They can't make a game of Breath of the Wild's scope and vision, there's no time for it. As a result, I hope that if anything comes out of the utterly TOXIC discourse leading up to the launch of Sword and Shield it's that the upper management at Nintendo gives Gamefreak some more time for the next game. Greatness can't be reached when you're making one game a year.
@EfryeN2
@EfryeN2 4 жыл бұрын
I wonder if time is really the only issue. It's true that you can't fix every single game dev challenge by just throwing more money at it. But in some cases, you absolutely can. Best example: The animations in Sword and Shield are, for the most part, an absolute joke. It boggles my mind that with all the money they have at their disposal, they don't just hire an animation studio to take care of them. At the very least for the cutscenes. The same thing applies to sound design. It might also be a good idea to get an external studio to handle their gimmicky mini games, in this case camping, to make them a bit more bearable. There are many options they could have explored to improve the quality of this game, but it seems like they just didn't want to spend the money for them.
@MassiveScore
@MassiveScore 4 жыл бұрын
What projects are they juggling? They mostly jump from Pokemon game to Pokemon game with an occasional game on the side. Do you think Sword and Shield suffered because of Little Town Hero?
@Small_Leviathan
@Small_Leviathan 4 жыл бұрын
@@EfryeN2 There is a very real possibility that time isn't the only issue, but I think it's the main one. And I don't think just tossing money everywhere IS an option for Gamefreak. It's true that Pokémon is the biggest franchise in the world, but that money does not go directly to Gamefreak, it goes to Nintendo and the Pokémon Company. It's true that spending more to do things like outsource animation work and minigame programming would ease up Gamefreak's workload but I'd be very surprised if their publishers let them spend those resources.

@@MassiveScore Sword and Shield was in development at the same time as the Let's Go games, as was Little Town Hero. Sword and Shield did probably suffer as a result of LTH but the blame isn't on that game directly, but rather on the fact that Gamefreak seems to have to pump out a game every year, and THAT more than anything is the core issue. That's an extremely short turnaround cycle for development and if the statement from that ex-Gamefreak employee is true then it's no wonder a lot of Gamefreak employees are burnt-out and jaded.

@@Small_Leviathan Absolutely, I don't mean to blame Game Freak necessarily. I have no clue how much money they get or what their deal with Nintendo/ThePokemonCompany looks like. Chances are they aren't even *allowed* to make major changes to the formula without getting it approved by people who have never played a video game in their entire life. But *someone is* getting the money and *is* making the decisions and could likely fix many of the game's problems. Easily. And that's just frustrating!

2:15:33 You're in all kind of residences in Resident Evil 5, the game starts in a residential area of a city, the swamplands are the residences of indigenous people who build homes on stilts, the underground ruins are also the residences of these people. Biohazard is a boring title, I love that I can call it RESIDENT EVIL! Also, Resident Evil VII, I mean, c'mon.

"Mother. What is mother?" I'm pretty sure it's supposed to reference Mother Earth. The O of Mother in the logo is a planet, and each game the mother of the protagonist is more or less an important motivation. I prefer Earthbound, especially for Mother 2, because it's primarily about leaving your little town and traveling; it's a globe trotting adventure.

I agree with almost everything the three allies talked about Pokémon, yet I still give Pokémon a ten. Kyle says it the best, it’s not that great of a game yet we all still love it, because it’s FUN.

Pokemon Sword and Shield is not the game I wished it was, but it is still one of my favorite games I have played this year and one of my new favorites in the series. It might not be the best or most impressive at the time of release, but It is a big step for GameFreak (which definitely needs to pour a lot more money into it). It is way more replayable than the last two gens for my way of playing. I hope the next game does a lot more tho and most criticism is valid.

I'm kind of amazed at how much the american audience/medias love Star Wars Fallen Order, as if it was a GOTY contender and all. For a game that copies so much of its models (uncharted's platforming, tomb raiders puzzles, dark souls respawn/health mechanics), I don't think it does it really "great" or on the same level. It's got some great moments when the gameplay works, but its also so unprecise and timing is very often not tight enough to make you feel 100% in control (like in Sekiro or souls games). I guess you get bonus points for making a good star wars game. And not Battlefield Star Wars.

Terence Caron it’s just because it’s a decent Star Wars game and that kind of takes over any other form of criticism, that’s the power of Star Wars.

Google DGaF, they made a cringey AF ad for Stadia and now they wait for the money to come in. They might have about 100,00 users in the US as of today, that is if it even works for them. Boxes for lyfe, bruh!

I just don't see how Stadia will be able to dig out of this hole that they dug themselves into. Once Xbox announces their price point for XCloud, it might be a knockout. Xbox could conceivably just bundle XCloud into Xbox Game Pass Ultimate ($15/m) and all a consumer would need is a bluetooth controller of their choice (even a Duelshock they announced). XCloud already works on more androids, plus it's coming to PC in 2020 and iOS. They already have the GamePass app available everywhere. The crowd Stadia is trying to cater to is the box-less, on the go people. Xbox already has the model with GamePass to integrate, and everything compelling about game streaming, and it's still in beta.

While I did enjoy the Pokemon talk, I kind of got the impression that basically all the blame is being placed at Game Freak's feet and I have to wonder how much that's he case and how much Nintendo is responsible as the bigger company and publisher. The fact that Pokemon has been an annualized franchise for a good long while (not that it's clear who decides this) and GF is clearly a small company with little HD console development experience never seems to come up in these discussions, and everything seems to boil down to "they don't get ambitious because they don't have to". Even though I do agree that statement is true, it does make me wonder how much resources GF gets, especially given they have(? assuming it's not their decision of course) to keep releasing a new entry every year. The dividing up of the rights does a lot to complicate this either way. L&R

Gamefreak are just a very average games developer, they made their own game a while back called tembo which was very average. I get what you're saying but I think both parties are happy with the amount of money pokemon makes and I think Nintendo know how average gamefreak are so don't want to give them too much creative freedom to rock the boat.

I love Fallen Order but ; the load times are a pisstake. Sometimes I fall through the map or things render really slow. The Kashyk level has a lot of immersion-breaking things like no ambient sound after your defeat an AT-AT and the weird-looking Wookies. The distance in which you can lock on is so small. You can't lock on to a Stormtrooper who is the only target on the screen, because he is too far away. I don't really buy the relationship between any of the characters. They seem all buddy buddy but no time is set to develop their relationship. I played Lethal Alliance back in the day, so I really hated BD-1. The relationship between Cal and BD-1 is so random also. He makes some noises and you are meant to believe these guys are best buds. Overall Great gameplay (which can be improved upon with more polish and powerful hardware) Graphics on consoles looks like mud, definitely need to get it on PC. Somehow the pilot looks more realistic than Cal if that makes sense. Great traversal Alright story (Cal is cool, but was not really relatable to me, maybe they can fix that) This game is definitely Prince of Persia reincarnated and I'm so happy that its Star Wars that replicated its gameplay.
