Wtf, did that lady just say Germany doesn't have any culture? lol It has been one of the most important parts of Europe for ages. Germany have influenced pretty much every other culture here in Europe, it has influenced other languages etc. I mean, if she wanted to argue about UK, France, Italy, Germany or whatever having the richest culture I guess that could take a while. They all have a rich culture and history after all, but compared to USA? I'm sorry.. It's ridiculous. Germany started influencing other cultures long before there even was a USA. Besides a lot of the people going to USA were Germans so Germany has also left a huge impact on American culture. And no, I'm not German. I'm Danish. Our culture sure as shit was heavily influenced from our southern neighbors throughout our history. Both in good and bad ways of course. To say that Germany doesn't have culture should get people thrown in a river somewhere. :o

Cegesh Well, of course Germany was influenced. Everyone was. Southern Germans influenced Italy, Austria, Switzerland etc. and they influenced southern Germans back as well. The southern Germans then influenced central Germans and the central Germans influenced them back etc. etc. etc. That doesn't mean Germany and Germans don't have a culture. They have as much of a culture as anyone else on the planet. It's absolutely ludicrous to claim that Germany somehow magically managed to avoid ever getting a culture. German culture is what has made Germany a (arguably at least) good country that is able to help others. Not every culture has been able or willing to do that. German culture is clearly one of the better ones out there of your goal is an equal and fair society. Compared to the "American" (Mix of European cultures really) German culture certainly leaves it in the dust. They have people going bankrupt from hospital bills, people unable to afford getting an education, their fellow Americans dying in the streets, mass shootings every month etc. There's no doubt which of the two cultures I'd rather have in my country if we were somehow to lose our own here in Denmark.

I know these comments are quite old but I'll reply anyways. The problem is that often you are not really aware of your own culture as you are about others. You hear stuff like what the Chinese do for new years, that the Americans have Thanksgiving and so on. People like her fail to realize that her own culture is an everyday thing that she doesn't notice anymore even though we do things that are totally different in other countries or completely unheard of. A person from Taiwan cannot come here and not experience a culture shock after being here for some time. Also look at christmas: The most average christmas things there are on this world all find their origin in Germany: advent calenders, the christmas tree, christmas markets even giving presents on christmas started in Germany.

I was in the army in Germany from 1962-65. I was surprised how many Germans spoke English (and they wanted to practice it on me while I wanted to practice my German on them!). When we went out, all the music seemed to be American. On the other hand, there are large parts of the US where if you look in a phonebook (remember them?) half the names are German. Large parts of the US. So it probably works both ways more than we realize.

Konsumgesellschaft ist vielleicht der größste amerikanische Einfluss auf die Welt!! Wir in Kanada haben auch eine Konsumgesellschaft aber es war nicht immer so. Mindestens nicht so groß wie jetzt. Ich habe viele Familie in den U.S.A. und ich reise dorthin mindestens drei Mal pro Jahr aber ich bin sehr dankbar, dass ich Kanadierin bin! Die U.S.A. ist wie mein "Second Home" aber dieses Land hat zu viel Einfluss auf die Welt. Weil wir neben den U.S.A. lebt, vierliert Kanada sein eigenes Kultur, meiner meinung Nach. Aber ich liebe mein "Second Home" und hoffe, es bekomment den President, den es verdient!

Hehe, that English girl who thinks Germans like Americans more than the English is probably right. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that the largest ethnic group in the US are actually German Americans, ahead of Irish and English Americans. So ethnically, most Americans are German. I think few people know this and I was surprised when I first read about this. :)

I think they like us more because I feel like Germans also share the same opinion as Americans do on the brits, and that is that they are a bit too proper and posh. Americans get the sense that brits act like they are better than everybody, whereas Americans are outgoing and fun! We arent afraid to be who we are and make fun of ourselves from time to time. Brits are the opposite

But I think a number of Germans thinks pretty much the same of Americans as well. :D Maybe it's also because the Brits are geographically closer and Germans don't like their neighbors. Many Germans don't like the French and Austrians either. Heck, Germans of different regions don't even like each other. :D

The negativity that some Germans have towards the US is ultimately a direct results of our horrible policies of the early 2000s. The Iraq War was devastating for foreign relations. And so was the launch of the war on terror. But mostly Iraq. Germans dislike American politics. That’s it. They, and the rest of the world, love everything else. Movies, music, trends, lifestyle, companies and whatnot.

Same thing in Poland, if he said something like that there, there'd be a lot of reactions like "HOW DARE YOU". I think it's a bit taboo thing there, some gays pretend to be "normal"* (heterosexual) even in front of their family, because there're still situations when kids hear from their parents they're a disappointment etc. On the other hand, there're also a lot of people, esp a bit younger and in bigger cities, who are open to other people and their diversity and they won't stare at you, because you're talking in a foreign language, have a dark skin or Asian face or because you're a guy and yet you're holding another guy's hand.

The german culture is very visual when in the U.S our mannerisms are the same basically among the population with majority German within them. US influence on Germany is clear....but recent and superficial. Since most Americans trace their ancestries back to German...I think that Germany has a deep almost subconscious effect on all Americans. The first actor to win an Academy Award was German...(Emil Jannings)...and Sandra Bullock is German. German music dominates our concert halls...and our modern musical is an offshoot of German operetta...(remember Romberg...?) Our first freeway was modelled after the Autabahn...and the all American hotdog is a direct descendent of the wurst. Many of our inventions and artistic acheivements were a direct result of Germans coming here because of the political problems of the 30s....(Billy Wilder...Einstein....Murnau....Max Rheinhardt....Detuchland tut gut!

As a German American who went to Gymnasium in Deutschland and later lived and worked for a German company for 4 years, Germany was a very depressing place to live. What Germans see on t.v. is the worst of America, for example "The Jerry Springer Show". The language was so foul that it could not be dubbed into German, so it was in American with the subtitles in German. I really think that Germany buys these programs to make Germans think that "Alles in Amerika ist Scheiße".

+onyxbg Well you haven't met me (except perhaps just seen me here in the video). I moved to Europe namely because of my interest in European culture. I was born and raised in the USA, but still developed a great admiration for German artists such as Bach, Günter Grass, Albrecht Dürer, Käthe Kollwitz, Anselm Kiefer, Friedrich Nietzsche, Marlene Dietrich, Thomas Mann, etc., etc. I discovered these people from my teachers and friends in the USA. Millions of Americans are educated and also share a love for European culture. Also, I wouldn't have spent the last year of my life studying the German language if I didn't have a strong affinity for another culture other than the one I was brought up in.

With all the talk about Quebec separating from Canada and wanting to hook up with France again like an old girlfriend, Montreal felt very Canadian to me. My friend who is living in Montreal described it as a cosy version of Toronto and that was exactly it. But I must say, having Mount Royal being a nice large forest in the middle of the city was awesome.

This is similar to a previous comment, Cari: I think the answers will be more representative if it is a native German asking the questions. Lance did a nice job, but, his accent, even to a novice German speaker, is obviously American. I really love this line of questioning. Easy German should do some episodes in other countries to see how widely German is understood on the streets of other countries. They should ask people basic questions to start off with and if German seems to be widely spoken they should then make them a bit more complicated but if no one can understand anything then they should ask them in the language of that country what they think of German

This sounds very nice as i lived in Berlin for about 10 years and have no complaints and i spoke very little German however most everybody spoke English to me,i am being made a little home sick for Berlin as it was so easy with there transportation system to get around and boredom never existed for me while there and there Christmas market i loved very much and it was just beautiful and beginning to feel a little sad now being in Florida and people here are so unfriendly and walk pass you as complete stranger on the grounds on my complex. Anyway i am thinking about making a trip to Switzerland as i have fallen in love with Switzerland and there country and write about it on my FB page often and i get sad i am not there and being here,i have been to Switzerland in early 2000 up to Grindelwald to an investor meeting and loved every minute i was there and i had just move to Berlin and was told to move to Switzerland and now i feel sorry i didn't because i feel i belong in Switzerland ever since i read the book Target Switzerland" i said thats me i belong in that country thats me and consider my self Swiss German,in every way as i brought my self up,the American culture is non-exsisten,it has gone downhill and is a night mere .So anyway i am giving more thought to going to the Schweiz, anyway have a merry Christmas and thanks for the Videos.

Cari, you're right, in many cases, some/many Americans interpret most German comments as negative towards the USA. I'm a German speaking American who thinks positively about Germany. However, say USA in Germany and there is always something negative from Germans. Germans are, at times, unnecessarily critical, even about trivial things. The whole image of German culture could be improved just by being less critical and smiling more. Call it "superficial" if you want, but it is friendlier, nicer and just plain cool. Relax Germany...the Amis are packing up and going to Croatia, Italy, Poland, the Baltics, Scandanavia, etc.

李采芸 well i need to say that China ... Well. The thing is that China has communism and a Problem with their population. In China they Seem to be very supervicious(especialy men) in China you need to write in your CV how tall you are and your whight... Chinese stereotype in germany is that they are rude and make pictures oft anything,Bad working conditions...but ancient chinese culture is hyped.i really like the ancient clothing style!

Keine Überraschung! Viele Deutschen antworten auf Englisch wenn ein Ausländer versucht, Deutsch zu sprechen. Viele sind intolerante und das nervt mich weil ich mein Deutsch üben will und insbesondere weil ich im Land dieser Sprache bin. Also, meiner Meinung nach ist das ein bisschen unhöflich. Ich weiß mein Deutsch ist nicht perfekt und dass ich eine Akzent habe aber sie sollen es im Betracht ziehen, die Mühe, die die Ausländer machen. Und andere Sache die mich nervt von deutschen, ist dass wenn sie andere Sprachen lernen, wollen sie Geduld. Hier in Mexiko, zum Beispiel, sie wollen dass wir auf Spanisch mit ihnen sprechen und lassen uns nicht auf Englisch. Das gefällt ihnen nicht. Also, heuchlerisch! Aber egal! Wir sollten weiter auf Deutsch obgleich dass sie auf Englisch antworten. Das mache ich, es sei denn dass ich aufgebe.

Ich glaube, dass Amerika viele Einfluss mit ändere Ländern hat. Z.b, es gibt Starbucks und Mcdonald allerorts im Berlin. Es ist ein bisschen enttäuschend aber was können wir tun ?

Wie wärs mit nicht da einkaufen? Ich trinke Kaffee für mein Leben gern aber kann an einer Hand abzählen wie oft ich bei Starbucks war ... McDonald's gehörte voll zu meiner Jugendzeit aber als die rum war, war auch das ständige da essen. Ich versteh warum Starbucks boomt. Wär ich 15 würd ich da auch meine daily dosage cool kaufen wollen. Beide sind praktisch, das geb ich zu. Aber nicht gut für dein Geldbeutel, Gewissen. Alternativen gibts wie Sand am Meer.

Ich finde starbucks total dämlich und das essen der fastfood- ketten muss man ja einfach nicht essen. Ich finde aber das dieses englisch und Denglisch aufhören muss da sich viele einfach dadurch blenden lassen und manche ihre eigene Sprache beleidigen. Das ist mir besonders aufgefallen. Außerdem sieht man an den von der USA produzierten KZbin- Kanälen, dass sie sehr viele Falschnachrichten verbreiten und auch Fandoms heutzutage leben zerstören können. Bei den amerikanischen Serien wird die Qualität überschätzt und Serien aus anderen Ländern kommen garnicht mehr durch. Vor allem Canada leidet unter dem amerikanischen Einfluss. Generell wird alles aus den USA viel zu sehr geschätzt und verbreitet. Das die so viel Umsatz machen ist das Resultat. Und soetwas wie Denglisch entsteht. Grauenhaft. Das schlimmste ist aber immer noch das die deutsche Kultur zu grunde geht:Sprache, Feste ,Feiertage ,Benehmen/Etikette und Kompetenzen

If you're Canadian, you're SO saturated by American culture you don't even notice it. It's just the way it's always been. Although we do sometimes get nervous that we are so close to this behemoth and wherever the USA goes politically, we eventually tend to start leaning.

Her English isn't perfect,but deals with it pretty well. That's the infinite question: "What was first,The egg or the hen?" If you ask someone here in USA,the same question,answers would be very much the same.But in France they will be totally different.I grew up between New York and Paris,as a game I ask them in English they never answer.When I talk to them in French,the reaction is completely different (We spoke English afterwards,they just don't like to Speak English)

"letztendlich" is common in Berlin. It is also superfluous. In other parts of Germany people say "schliesslich".

I think it is a generational activity that has continued since the end of WWII. Staring with the american typewritter and the insertion of the letter "e" for the Umlaut keyed ä,ü,ö. A new way to spell German Words. Then the rebuilding of Europe with the Marshall Plan, the beginnings of NATO and the aftermaths. Yet in the the smaller towns or villages of Germany where traditional ways are still strongly followed, these influences may not be so apparent. It depends how old you are and what you lived through in Germany.

The big problem for Americans is that today most Germans under 40 speak English. When I was in Bremerhaven in the 60's I HAD to learn German as so few people spoke English then. We had to travel to Netherlands or Denmark to find a lot of english speakers.

I hear this from the Swedes too when they’re defending importing so many foreigners who have changed parts of Swedish society (for the worse). Germany has an incredible history and culture, and much of it influenced the US. Maybe not recently, but historically.
