For Americans who only speak English (me), learning a Romance language is (by far) the most difficult thing I've ever done. After four years of trying to learn Italian, I can read and write at a high A1/low A2 level, but listening (to understand what was said), and then replying (without translating), still eludes me. I'm not sure what keeps me going after years of failure (!), but this video perfectly described what I have experienced for four years.

In addition to talking to yourself in your head, it helps to talk out loud, too. This way you get use to hearing yourself say things with sounds you don't normally make. Doing this in front of a mirror gives you the sense of talking to another person but it isn't necessary.

My native language is Persian (Farsi). For my second language, I used the "thinking technique" that you mentioned and it did wonders! Although I just did it because I didn't have anyone to talk to, in the end, I realized that It had helped me a lot. And when it came down to the actual speaking, I would speak much more fluently as if I had already practiced the lines. So Italian is gonna be my third language and by applying those same techniques that I used for English, I find that my Italian learning process has been a lot smoother.

Ciao Katie. Ciao Matteo. Non ho problemi con assorbire ed automatizzare l'italiano. Ho un amico italiano che vive a Como a cui mando spesso dei messaggi vocali. L'unica problema è accettare che non posso dire tutto che voglio dire. Quando parliamo delle cose un po più profondo, a un certo punto noto che il mio italiano semplicemente non basta per spiegare i miei sentimenti o opinioni. Questo mi fa impazzire.

I was born in Rome but left at 18 months old, so if I learned any Italian then, I forgot it. But listening to it without trying to understand is super relaxing for me, as if it brings me back to an early childhood state of revery where you're just ultra receptive (or 'absorbent'). I guess I should try the same with some other languages and see if I feel the same.

Hi guys, this episode states what I have always thought is the best way to learn a language. The Absorption part. The Automation part. The reference to children learning without the grammar. I think most schools err by teaching scholasticly (if that exist) . For me the trick was exposure to English sounds... listening to records with lyrics in both languages expanded my vocabulary and taught me how to pronounce even fast tongue twisters. Having TV on whenever I was indoors allowed me to finally hear the separation between words at the end of US stay. When people ask me how I learned English so well (I am mother language Italian) I tell them by immersion. I did not hang out with Italians when in the US, I did not read in Italian (I still read mostly in English) I totally embraced English. It is my go-to language actually though some Italian sayings are irresistible. I know my chickens is one! :-) or Perdersi in un bicchier d'acqua! LOL! I love your series they explain so much about language, Italian culture and the process of learning. Great job! Katie, your pronunciation is excellent!!!!

Grazie! I'm trying to learn from my kids on how to approach italian. My youngest, 2, repeats everything I say. My oldest, 4, will constantly make the same mistakes like 'I goed' because we add '-ed' to most past verbs so irregular verbs in English confuses her. Così, repeat, repeat and try getting the point across and hopefully someone will correct your italian. We have to act like kids in learning all new languages with patience and practice. Thank you so much for this video. I am currently using Rosetta Stone to learn Italian, which is using the 'learn as you would if you were a child' approach, lots of repetition, no grammatical rules, you kind of figure it out as you go along. I supplement that course with listening to lots of music, vlogs, TV shows etc, just like I did when I did not speak English yet (I am Dutch living in the UK). And of course your videos and the FB group help a great deal to connect with others and to learn a bit more about the 'why' and 'how'. Thank you!

This was really interesting. At the moment when I watch your video, my eyes are spinning between the Italian, the English translation and watching you to see how you say the words! Good point about how children learn. I get disheartened and want to give up. You give reassurance. Matteo , do you do the same with English. The problem I have is hearing Italian. I've tried to train my ear, but I'm finding these videos are helping a lot. At first I'd read the Italian texts and sometimes the translation, now mostly just the Italian. I'm less critical of speaking at the moment since I must be able to understand what is being said first before I can have a conversation. I'm at level A2 in Italian.

Per me, è molto interessante. Sto studiando l"italiano per circa 15 anni, i recentemente ho comminciato di pagare per "Easy Italian". Mi piace molto: spero che il mio livello di italiano sia circa C1. Recentemente, ho notato è commune per me di pensare in italiano prima di dormire. Anchè, un anno fa ho dovuto avere due anestetici: le infermiere hanno detto, che dopo, come sono tornato dopo le operazione, avevo parlato l"italiano! Spero di non aver usato parolacce!

I catch myself translating Italian to Bulgarian (my native language) or English if the words sound similar and I just do it by association. I studied Italian for 7 years (grades 1-7), but now it's been almost 7 years since I've actively used the language. It's my second time coming back at it and translating words and simpler sentences almost becomes a way for me to convince myself I haven’t forgotten the language. It's annoying because with English I don't even remember now a time in which I've translated something in my head while listening, reading, talking etc. Definitely need to expand my vocabulary and start learning more complex grammar, your videos are extremely helpful with the English subtitles right below the Italian ones!

I just wrote a long comment but then I put it on the comments for the wrong video. That's embarrassing. It was too long to write again as it can take me 15 minutes or more to write one Italian sentence - and I still get most of it wrong. But, I was proudly trying to demonstrate my lack of ability. My biggest problem - Accettare. Thank you for sharing your own difficulties. It gives me, and I'm sure others, a little courage. I will try your 3 A's, but acceptance, that's the tough one.

The language learning process has been very hectic for me I'm going to tell you the methods I tried, Please tell me which ones should i modify or stop doing and some extra tips also 1. Reading I read short stories in my target language first I skim read and record myself while I'm at it, then I mark new vocab/sentences and study them 2. Speaking I don't have anyone to talk to in my target language So I pick up simple topics from the internet and try to talk about it. (but, I always translate in English & think too much of sentence structure and false grammar) 3.watching tv shows I watch Netflix shows in my target language with both subtitles (English + target language) The chrome extension "Language reactor" helps me with this This extension automatically pauses the video on one scene which in turn helps me to read & listen to my target language But this is a very slow process. It took me two weeks to finish 1episode 4. pictures I try not to use English instead I use pictures ex: for cat -> I would use a picture of a cat but for words like so, also, but.... -> how will i find pictures for that 5. grammar I just mug it up I have a grammar book which is both in my target language and in English I don't wanna learn a language by translating or thinking in English. I want it to be natural. thank you for your tips and suggestions xxx
