Let me say it a different way as an electrical engineer. Dielectric grease does all the things that grease does.(lubrication, repels water, etc.) Plus since it does not conduct electricity it assures it does not offer an unintended path for current. Grease on contacts makes them slid together but the contacts easily pushes the grease out of the way to make the electrical connection. So the grease only makes them slide easier. Grease can be a problem if the contacts normally generate lot's of heat because the grease can catch fire. The dielectric label gives you confidence you aren't going to short out your contacts. OTOH, Non-dielectric grease is bad around electrical contacts because it offers a path to short out the current. Grease that is sometimes used in brakes is not dielectric because it has bits of copper in it. I think the copper has something to do with reducing brake squeal. I'm not sure how. But if you get that stuff near electrical parts you will have a bad time. And finally if you drop dielectric grease on the floor that would be dielectric gravity. I didn't learn that in engineering school. I learned that from Rainman Ray.

Since worn-out spark plugs are front and center, I gotta chime in. My wife was driving to work when her "check engine" light lit and dinged. She was near the stealer so she pulled-in. Diagnostic code was "Wet Spark Plugs." She had been driving through a lot of water. Expert advisor explained water drips down between the "glass" and the steel on the "worn-out" plugs (11K on the car--factory plugs. He said plugs should be replaced every oil change--3500 miles.) and drips into the engine, "rusting" the pistons and bearings. Their $700 "tune-up special" would save her engine. Thank God this knowledgeable Good Samaritan was there to help. Fortunately, she called me, so all it cost was the diagnostic charge. Within a year, the stealership was under new management.

Way back around 2005, my father asked me to take a look at his 98 F-150 with the 5.4 L engine. He'd had a gent replace the plugs for him, and complained that it ran even worse than before the plug change. I started pulling out the plugs, and found that the gaps weren't anywhere near what it called for, for the straight gasoline version of that engine. And then noticed that the plugs were a mixture of different part numbers, and even a mix of different brands. After doing a little research, turns out the "gentleman" that had installed the plugs, had mixed in plugs for the CNG and Bi-Fuel versions of that engine, along with the correct ones for the Gasoline version - but even the "correct" plugs weren't gapped anywhere even close to the correct setting. Much time later, after installing all new plugs of the correct type and spark gap, it purred like a kitten.

It has the 15" wheels and finding new tires for these is quite a headache, I had to settle for a mismatched set (2+2, same specs but different manufacturers) because nobody had 4 of them in stock at the time. I thought about switching to the more common 16" rims, but 2 different mechanics warned me that this might be risky unless I do a full overhaul of the suspension, sensors and software as well. @TXAG812 жыл бұрын
NGK (not sure about Denso) does not recommend anti-seize on initial install in aluminum heads as they are already coated or plated with a material to prevent seizing. However, if you remove to inspect and remove-install, they recommend applying anti-seize but reducing specified torque by 20%.

Maybe so on a coating, but my past experience with say Motorcraft plugs and no antiseize and in a aluminum head, about pulled the threads out of the head. Luckily didn't gall, but they screamed taking them out, going slowly. Maybe things have changed, but I put nickel antiseize on the threads, never had a issue with removal or shorting out/running issues.

I've been wrenching on cars since I was a little kid. Rebuilt the engine in our 78 Chevy Van with the old man when I was 8yr old. I'm 50 now and have been a hobby mechanic my whole life. Now I work on my kid's cars almost every weekend. The problem is that it gets really tough on the body as you age. I couldn't imagine being hunched over and under a car everyday in my 50s and '60s. There has to be a path to management or service writer, etc.

I sold spares for about 20 years and would randomly check plug gaps from our stock when they arrived, and many times we would sell a standard plug with a standard gap, and re gap them to 1.1mm if we were out of stock of that particular part number, just on the off chance a customer ever claimed they damaged a plug trying to gap it correctly and I think I found perhaps 2 plugs that were gapped incorrectly.

What!!! No anti seize on the plug threads??? Old school VW/Porsche factory schooled mech, taught to ALWAYS apply a dab of anti seize. Especially on aluminium heads. The probability of a galvanic reaction between the dissimilar metals...steel plug vs alum. can create corrosion between the two metals. More than once I've seen old, long time installed plugs when removed with half or more of the cyl. head plug hole threads bonded, pulling the threads with it onto the spark plug threads. Time for a heli-coil or Timesert thread repair. A little anti seize can save a huge headache and a PITA repair. Sunday Driver?? Referencing Brock Yates book?? Anyone a fan of racing and racing personalities should read this. An ez,fun must read book. Especially the chapter of Dan Gurney and Brock Yates Cannon Ball cross country drive in Kirk F, Whites Ferrari Daytona that had just finished the Daytona 24 hour race. If you've ever wondered about some of the silly spoof scenes and characters in the Cannon Ball movies, you should read this book. Much of it really happened!! 😂
