The portions are much bigger for small packs here, because it's a law to list something that a consumer is likely to finish in one sitting as a serving, so a big box of cereal has a much smaller serving than a little tub 🙂

gnislia on the other hand, people don't actually pay that much attention to how much they actually eat so a serving size/calorie count that doesn't factor in that people eat the entirety of a bag of potato chips or two slices of bread or that require you to do massive amounts of math to figure out how many calories you are eating is not actually helping people eat less.

"Serving size" and "portion size" is nothing more than marketing. Its simply just a measure of what the nutritional information is based off of. There is no standard or anything, companies are *required* to put the nutritional information on the packaging and consequently, when they are forced to give you more information, they manipulate it to try to make everything seem more healthy than it is.

Here in the United States, back when Michelle Obama was the First Lady in the United States, she championed nutrition issues and part of it was getting companies to make the serving sizes realistic. Because calling something a "serving size" is misleading, especially on things like individually wrapped muffins or cookies that are listed as two servings for one cookie and things like that. Some things did change but not everything.

Another interesting point, I feel like they changed serving sizes while I was growing up around the Obama era. We used to have the smaller more UK style portion sizes on packaged products (fast food/service food is a different story) but they wanted a more realistic representation of what people “actually eat”. The small portion sizes used to be a joke because most people don’t tuck into one cookie or 10 chips. They also redid nutrition labels here to include clearer information and things like “added sugars” in a product.
@Nimeariel4 жыл бұрын
Serving sizes have been increasing since the 90s (maybe some could argue even earlier, but I'm a 90s kid so that's all I know) in portion size- especially when it comes to fast food. However, on the same respect, actual sizes of things have been decreasing over the years. For example, Chips Ahoy cookies and Nilla Wafers. You used to get a cookie that was easily the diameter of oh I don't know.... maybe about 3 inches? 2 inches? Now they're barely the diameter of a golf ball (maybe an inch and a half??) or smaller!!! I could give many more examples of things such as ice cream tub sizes or drink bottle/can sizes or the amount of things you get in a similar sized bag anymore..... so also I think in that respect that's why the serving sizes for SOME items have been going up- you HAVE to eat MORE of the product nowadays to keep up with how much you had to eat back then. For example, with the cookies, now it says maybe 5 or 6 are a serving size but back then, maybe it said 2 or 3.... Well yeah because they were bigger. But on the flip side, as you've mentioned, I definitely remember when a child's size drink at say, McDonalds today is the same size as what a Small would have been back in the 90s. They didn't even HAVE today's "large".... today's large would be like their SUPERSIZE which no one EVER got. The 90s large would be like today's small or even maybe medium.

With Oreos, I think they did the opposite. It used to be 3 cookies, now it's 2, but now the calories are more for 2 compared to the calories for 3 back then, if that makes sense. It's like they altered the nutritional contents of the food to keep the calories and whatnot the same while making the serving size smaller.

KayGee no this woman is probably talking about from a really long time ago. I’m 21 and have known the larges to always be that size. The only reason we got rid of the supersize (which was even bigger) is because of the documentary supersize me about a guy who lived off of McDonald’s for like a while or something and it really messed up his health (which shocked doctors somehow? Like doctors at this time honestly thought eating McDonald’s every day for a long time wouldn’t have any negative affects on his body?) and the name supersize became associated with that bad publicity so they got rid of it

When I moved, many years ago, from Scotland to N. America, one of the first things that struck me was how BIG everything was, including the people. I don’t mean that people in N. America were fat, because most weren’t back then, but the vast majority were certainly taller and more sturdy than their British counterparts, and their lifestyle was certainly more active, and it still is. I strongly suspect that is why portions were/are larger, as larger people generally require more food, especially when one considers the more active lifestyle. That said, I’ve never seen anyone eat anything less than a 500ml Ben & Jerry’s! Most people don’t pay ANY attention to what containers say about ‘suggested serving size.’ Some people will barely nibble, while others eat a humongous amount. I don’t eat fast food or junk food, but I have, on occasion, bought a cup of mint tea from McDonalds, and I’ve watched people buy two or three LARGE hamburgers just for themselves, as well as supersized fries and a humongous cola. What interests me is that not everyone who eats large amounts is overweight. Some people are, of course, but others are positively skinny.... I should hate to see their arteries though!😱 Love and All Good Things, Jesse.🌹

Well, a lot of products in the US just show calories for serving sizes, but here in Europe, they have to have calories per 100 grams on food items. So if you are comparing two packages of cookies in the US, you have to do the math to find out which one contains fewer calories, because the serving sizes are never the same. @tookitogo4 жыл бұрын
Suzanne Stauffer But the serving sizes in USA aren’t standardized, so manufacturers come up with laughably tiny serving sizes to make products appear artificially healthy. In Europe, they have to give the nutrition info per 100g.
@suzannestauffer77614 жыл бұрын
@@tookitogo I think that was Michelle Obama's issue with it; that "serving" size should be a realistic serving. Look at the cereal box. The front picture is at least three servings in that bowl yet the nutrition info says a serving is 3/4 cup. Iced cream, who eats a half cup of iced cream except someone dieting. Everyone talks smack about fast food restaurants but at least their portion sizes on the calorie counts are realistic (If not too large) so at least you know what you are stuffing in your face.
@tookitogo4 жыл бұрын
Suzanne Stauffer Totally agree. The most egregious example of an unrealistic serving size that I’ve ever found is on Pam cooking spray: it was (maybe still is? I haven’t looked in a while) marketed as “fat free” despite consisting of >99% oil. How? Because the FDA says that a food can be advertised as fat free if a serving contains less than 0.5g of fat. So Pam defines a “serving” as a 1/2 second spritz. So literally, it’s fat free by virtue of simply not using any... 🤦♀️

(from what I know) A lot of American restaurants aim to FEED you and give you extra to take out, whereas Restaurants in the UK tend to lean more towards giving you an experience, food servers tend to be paid more, but tips aren't such a big deal. With British restaurants, especially high-end ones, It focuses a lot on the seasonality of the food and the flavour, balance of texture and commodities and garnishes. American ones seem to be more about making sure you leave full with extra to take home. My conclusion; America, you pay for food , UK, you pay for a little of everything for experience. Here in the US, we also have ingredients in our foods that are illegal to put in foods in Europe. We have steroids, artificial EVERYTHING, hormones and gmo's. In addition to the larger portion sizes, these are some reasons we have such a high obesity rate. 🤷♀️
@sweetangiegirl14 жыл бұрын
@A J Of course! But those steroids and growth hormones definitely don't help, either. I would also argue that dieting has not caused an obesity epidemic.

As far as restaurants go, most Americans, including myself, never eat all of what's on the plate and take the rest home as leftovers for lunch the next day. I don't see our bottles or packages being larger as a bad thing. I can get one bottle of something and share it with my kid
@luv2skat4 жыл бұрын
Me too! I do that for everything. You go out to a restaurant for dinner and you get tomorrow's lunch included as leftovers! My sister laughs at me, but I save money.

@@luv2skat There's a family style italian restaurant we go to. My kid and I will each other something different, and you get soup, salad, and bread with the meal. After the soup, salad, and bread, we're always full. So we take the main dishes to go, and they're big servings enough for 2 more meals. That's 3 meals for 2, for $30. Hard to beat that price. Same for most Thai restaurants. Family style serving is a money saver.

Sugar, American stuff is sweeter
@karas72614 жыл бұрын
UK one has approx 43g of cane sugar per 600ml, US one has 64g of high fructose corn syrup - cane sugar and corn syrup have the same amount of calories. So that's a 74 calorie difference, for the exact same amount of Dr Pepper.
@VolcanoEarth4 жыл бұрын
@@yvettepiercy4487 Sugar? I wish. Here it's all high fructose corn syrup, which is worse (not only in taste, but worse for your body) than cane sugar. @jessicas2534 жыл бұрын
In Europe they assume a 2.000 calorie diet which usually contains of 3 meals and 2 snacks. So they calculate it according to the type of product and which meal it's usually consumed for. Breakfast, lunch and dinner usually have around 550 calories each. So this will leave you with 175 calories for each snack. But it's still kind of weird when you think of sides like rice as you never know what the topping will be. In the end it makes more sense for ready-made meals and snacks.
@LittleBargainNook4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree that it’s so much better to listen to our bodies. Quite a contrast between the two. Wonder how other countries compare?
@esthermphelps4 жыл бұрын
In the u.s. serving size it's used mostly to measure calorie and nutrition. Many companies will manipulate the serving size to have favorable caloric and nutrition no numbers. For instance if they want to say that it's a hundred calories per serving, still say that it's three servings per bag of chips. Even though most people will take the whole bag of chips.

So true when I couldn't finish the breakfast at denis diner in sanfransico they put in containers for us i love how sweet Americans are to British people
@kevinbaker61684 жыл бұрын
The thing is in the U.S. a serving side is the amount suggested by the manufacturer to try and keep the item within the recommended daily calorie consumption. If you look at some of the amount in the package that is based on the suggested serving size you can easily see that the package may have multiple servings, while in reality most people will consume the entire package. This particularly true with confections and snacks, which are usually more calorie dense because of cats, sugar and other carbohydrates.

Hi Grace! Big fan of your videos :) just wanted to point out that the actual serving size for Froot Loops is 1 cup (28/29 grams) if you get it from a box. You got like the to-go version, and it’s nutrition label is designed as if you were to eat the whole thing (I personally see those as 2 serving sizes!). But awesome video regardless!!
