MrRedeyedJedi It might just sort of be the old school mentality of whoever owns it.. there’s a burger joint where I live that’s actually very similar... no special burgers, everyone just gets a cheeseburger with pickles and onions + a bag of lays potato chips. My grandpa loves the simplicity I guess and if the place in this video is supposedly the originator of burgers, they’re probably trying to stick to the basics as well, just on a stricter level. It’s just the theme of the place and it’s probably advertised to let people know they’re not planning on going against their traditions just to please a whoever “wants things their way” as the sign read... there’s other places for that when this seems more like a novelty restaurant where you know what you’re getting into
@jonas1895 жыл бұрын
@@Simon_Sez It's okay to change traditions. I don't live anywhere near this place, but we had a similar place in my area and after they started getting so many negative reviews they realized that without changing with the times they weren't going to last. This place may claim to be the original burger, but that cred has gone away if they can't update with the times. All they have to do is leave the original on the menu, but add a couple options, burger toppings and condiments are extremely cheap, it won't hurt them to get with the times while keeping traditions I'm tact. A stubborn business that doesn't listen to reviews especially in this day and age will not last. For the record, I ran a burger joint for over a decade (not the one I mentioned), so I have some experience in the field.
@Simon_Sez5 жыл бұрын
jonas189 I don’t think things are so black and white friend.. if that’s how they choose to run their business and it’s makes enough money for them, so be it. If the owners have enough people who like what they get there to sustain their lifestyle then I don’t see the issue. Everything isn’t about making as much money as possible lol if they were completely broke you may have a point. But I don’t think it’s “stubborn” to not conform with what a bunch of random people want you to do. That’s the exact entitled mindset they seem to be trying to stay away from.. the only people who I could really imagine getting upset with what’s served at novelty type burger place is an incredibly entitled person who wants everything their way and apparently there’s a lot of those people if there’s legitimate complaints. Seriously, you know you’re not going to McDonald’s or any chain burger place so why are you gonna get upset when they’re different? Gotta have realistic expectations and that’s exactly why they have the signs. They should have one saying “no entitled POS allowed” too
@jonas1895 жыл бұрын
@@Simon_Sez I understand your point, but at the same time a business is only successful when they have customers, so you do have to cater to the customers to a point. I haven't seen their books to see how their business is doing, but simply by looking at their reviews from multiple sources (Google, Yelp etc...) You can see the customers that simply do not like this place seem to not like it because they are unwilling to do what it takes in order to fix the issues people have with it, such as no condiments and bland, rare burgers. The people who seem to love it are the long time customers who have a nostalgic feeling for the place. Personally I would love to try the place for myself since I love a good burger and want to see who is right and who is wrong about this place, but I don't see myself traveling to Connecticut anytime soon, but having worked in food myself for years, I don't like food snob type places and this seems like it may be one of those places, but without having been there myself I won't judge. I would, however, bring my own bottle of spicy brown mustard to flavor it up in case the burger was terrible 😁

One thing I find weird. Wiki says they claim the burger was invented in 1900 but they're serving it on sliced sandwich bread which wasn't invented until 1928. So they must've made some changes to it at that point. Not to mention how the bread has probably changed since then with preservatives or whatever. I also don't get the 'no ketchup'. Heinz has been bottling ketchup since 1897 and it dates back decades before that. It's just the recipes differ in the spices of ketchup and also somewhere chunkier looking closer to salsa.

I don't know if you'll still see this, but you were asking for recs as you travel on another video. The no ketchup thing just jogged my memory. Here in LA is a place called Fathers Office. There's one in Culver City and one in Santa Monica. They also do the no ketchup, no substitutions, not nothing on the burgers. But ... they're actually pretty good. They come on a tasty french-style roll, I think it is, with arugula, caramelized onion, and some kinda cheese. It's not really my favorite burger, but it actually is really good. There's also like fifty beers on tap, so if you need some cold ones, it'll be a great place. If you end up making it out here, hit me up and the first burger's on me.
