Uga or coconut crabs are considered a delicacy as it is not easily available for anyone to get anytime they want. It's exotic taste adds on to that reputation as well.
The uga has been banned from being exported or sent out of Niue for a few years now. A change that most locals welcome, but a disappointing one for Niueans abroad.
The change has seen a healthy number of big sized ugas consumed locally rather than saving them for export.
Here on Niue Island, the uga or coconut crabs are not on the verge of extinction or considered as on the endangered species list.
We do have our own ways of managing and harvesting our coconut crabs sustainably so that there will be enough and continue to be enough for our future generations, just like how it has been preserved for us by our ancestors.
In this video you can see us dismantling and enjoy eating a coconut crab or uga in our backyard. Uga definitely is something you have to try if you haven't had it yet.
You can also check out our other videos where we practiced handling coconut crabs and hunting them at night.
