Sannakji is a Korean delicacy. It consists of live octopus that has been cut into small pieces and served immediately. See how the nakji pieces are still squirming on the plate when me and my younger brother tried this dish in Korea.

The tip here is: before eating, put some sauce over the octopus, and drink a lot of soju in between (soje=korean spirit, made from sweet potato; you can see it in a small green bottle in this video)

@soocl0se I agree with the dead part but I think the twitching and moving is because some of the squid's senses and actions are in the tentacles. Like you know how you can grow an arm from a body but not a body from an arm. Not that those are the same thing but the stuff that makes it happens is similar. What snake?

@tomb1272 MtHC was (1) an isolated incident of which replication is improbable, and (2) its brain stem was still intact as well as the jugular vein. Meaning that limited activity was possible as well as all involuntary movement such as digestion. The octopus in this video was... diced. Any of those pieces are about as "alive" as your hand if you were to chop it off.

The reason that the squid and octopus (cephalopoda) moves because they have one of the best neuro-networks in Animalia. Their neuro-transmitters (more commonly acetylcholine, nitric oxide, dynophrine) reacts much more efficiently than we do.

because octopi have nerve ganglion in their tentacles. Their tentacles aren't actually alive. As long as the octopus has been killed very recently and is fresh, it will continue to squirm due to the nerve ganglion. That is also why in this video the tentacles squirms harder when coming into contact with sauce, because the sodium in the sauce causes nerve spasms.

As already mentioned it's not 'alive' it's just the nerves that make it move, it moves for about 5 minutes or so. It can't really be dangerous when it's cut up like that, if it's a whole octopus then yeah, some people have been known to choke. Food is cheap in korea so it wouldn't be that expensive, for everything on their table i'd say roughly $20.

For the people who think it's the sauce making it move, have you ever killed a snake, or used a worm for fishing? it's all in the nerves. That piece is still alive.

@bozodribel well chickens have this paticular phenomena of having post mortem reflexes which last for a few seconds, it would be curious to ponder on which is suffering the most, the head or the body. Octopusses and squids are more similar to jellyfish who have their central nervous system spread throughout the body, you're actually cutting pieces of "brain" by cutting limbs ect. You might ask me how do u kill it quickly then, that i dunno but trust me he's not having a good time at all.

In Japan, there are some people who will eat an octopus tentacle pulled right off the live creature, but will NOT eat a live squid tentacle pulled right off the live creature. They're not the same animal, and apparently there is something that makes some people nervous about raw squid, but fine with raw octopus. In this video and description, both "octopus" and "squid" is used. Which is it??? It doesn't look like BOTH, so one word is wrong.

Since the octopus looked like it was already chopped into many pieces, i believe it's already dead ._. It's just the nerves moving, like how a lizard's tail continues to move around even after it is detached from the body.

just so people knopw, the octopus isn't dead, they eat it alive, the samurai used to eat them whole, and alive, because they thought it brought courage, and it's also very dangerous because the octopus or squid will sometimes grapple the tongue of the person eating it and they can choke to death.
