Was raised in Maine and lived there til I turned 30. The parking lot you're in in the first minute or so is right behind the first place I ever worked. It's also where I learned how to drift in the snow in my first car when I was 15 hahah total trip having watched you for so long and seeing you walk around where I grew up. Hope Maine was welcoming and enjoyable!

The fungus you found (hemlock varnish, reishi) are actually edible in that stage. The white outer edge is soft, and can easily be sautéed. I think it’s amazing actually. The rest of the fungus is highly medicinal and can be dried to make tea or made into tincture. Reishi is the elixir of life in Asian cultures! Great vids, I’m Maine born and one of my favorite places on earth.

Give Mav a break, he's out there actually Doing it (which so many of us can't) even if he's Googling what to do and it might be not always right.. he's Doing it and Trying!
@AArrad

What he googles today is probably what he'll remember tomorrow, so I don't really see it as cheating. But I see as olive oil and butter as cheating haha
@xantherxavier5429
@xantherxavier5429 Жыл бұрын
@@AArrad Well, for a cheat to be a cheat it has to give you a significant advantage in addition to being against the rules, right? So while the use of butter and olive oil in pan-frying may technically be against the rules, I wouldn’t consider it a _cheat_ seeing that he didn’t gain a significant advantage of any sort from it. Maybe a few calories, but nothing huge-it was just for flavor’s sake. Same goes for the curry seasoning he used on the mussels and snails

Hey Mav, you can soak the freshwater mussels in clean spring water, and add a bit of corn meal to the water, it will help clean the mussels out as well as sweeten them up a bit! I thoroughly enjoy going out and harvesting freshwater mussels here in Florida, I love them! They make great stews, as well as AWESOME bait!

I grew up in Durham, ME (where Stephen King spent his elementary school years at my school). Maine is a special place, very unique. That deep blue water rushing on the rocks is so calming yet mysterious. The cloudy rainy days really have an enigma to them. I think the ocean really dampens the air and gives it such a mystery - one could really feel lonely on a foggy/rainy evening up there. Best place to call home

He caught quite a few fish, each at least a few feet long, and another at Popham casting with a long line and just letting it sit. He was also quite successful. Both were casting quite far out using lures with a bright chrome spinners.

I always tell people to experience something like this. It truly makes you appreciate what you have! Next time, tack on foraging for fresh water! You will REALLY get an idea of how much work it takes to truly survive.

Helpful tip: When you pull wild plants to eat, don't pull out the roots! Cut the plant at about 1 inch above the soil level. Because when you leave the roots in the ground the plant will re-grow! Nothing re-grows if you pull out the roots that you won't eat!
