Here come some Surströmming fact straight from a swede!! You should never open a can indoors!!! It can linger forever, its like cigarette smoke! the taste is as Daz described, briny and fishy! We usually eat it with very mild things such as boiled potatoes, sour cream and butter on plain bread because of the strong taste! If Daz liked it he should definitely try to eat it the traditional way, no one just raw dogs surströmming!

Truth. I wouldn't eat it, but my neighbor who does follows a strict procedure. Always outdoors, open the can in a bucket of water, scrape off a tiny bit of the "good" meat and eat it with potatoes, onions and sourcream. And alcohol. Eating it like most youtubers do is like chugging a bottle of soy sauce. That's not how you're meant to eat it.

Surströmming was actually created by mistake. When Gustav Vasa was at war, there was a shortage of salt in the country (which they used to keep food from spoiling). As a result, the stored fish began to ferment, and people started eating it to avoid starving to death. So, it holds a special place in Swedish history because it saved lives.

Surströming comes from Sweden, just some tip is that when you open the pot you can do it underwater ( put it in a bowl of water) because then the smell won't be that horrible and strong. In Sweden, we usually eat it on a bread called tunbröd with some crème fresh and chopped onion and then small pieces of fish. An Daz I must say you lock great in a beard.

Surströmming is a Swedish gourmet fish mostly at the coast in northern Sweden. My mom loves it and is longing for it every summer. Its eaten with boiled potatoes, onion, sour cream and some also have tomatoes. Röda ulven is a brand from the high coast where i come from and it means red wolf. As a swede, opening a surströmming in your kitchen is the worst thing you can ever do. I'm so sorry but the smell does NOT and I repeat NOT disapear. I have not had the guts to eat surströmming but you are supposed to open it outside, under water so it doesn't smell as horrible and nobody eats that thang raw. We eat it on special occations such as midsummer and it is kind of a statement to eat it, I don''t know anybody who actually enjoys surströmming. Btw I have been a dazzler for years and love the content and am sending prayers to your friends kitchen :)

I am so proud of Daz eating that Surströmming with somewhat of an open mind, the smell is harsh to say the least xD It's meant to be eaten alongside potatoes, onion and some bread if I remember correctly (I have never eaten it the proper way but I am looking forward to do it someday) and I think that would be so good! Usually you should open the surströmming box under water like in a bucket, to avoid the smell getting into ur walls etc cuz its so hard to get rid of the smell, if i remember correctly, there was a family in Netherlands or something that opened one and they had to sanitize their whole house due to the smell clinging onto the walls :b

What is surströmming? Small Baltic herring are caught in the spring, salted and left to ferment at leisure before being stuffed in a tin about a month before it hits the tables and shops. It's from Scandinavia and you should have opened it outside cause the smell is Rancid and will make you're house smell offal and in Swedish it means sour herring

The smell apparently went right through the filters and despite the tent, the smell lingered in the studio for two weeks until they ordered an ozonation.

This was hilarious! One of the worst things I ever put in my mouth was a mussel where a tiny little crab had died inside. I still remember the splat, the crunch, the liquid and then spitting out the tiny little pincers. Still can't eat mussels.. 🤢 Have you guys ever tried Dutch Balkenbrij? It is traditionally made of pig offal and baked in slices in a pan. Else I'd recommend you try salty liquorice, called Napoleon salmiak kogels. Can't think of anything else dutch that's horrific. Maybe the raw herring..
