You can say I have been to japan so many times. But you can't say last year, yesterday, 2 months ago, 3 days ago, 5 hours ago, etc. You can't say, last year, I have been to Japan. Instead, you say, Last year I went to Japan. and that is the fact whether you accept it or not. Love you, son.

I have been learning English for 5 years. I have been learning English sincec2005. Above the both sentenced are correct. Because for is used for period of time whereas since is used for point of time, or a begining of time such as, since 1996, since childhoodetc. And for 2 hours , 2 days, or 2 years etc.

Hello! Thanks for your videos, they all are really interesting! The example you used "being married with/to"..well I'm Italian and in Italian we say "being married with" and it is very hard to speak English THINKING in English rather than translating what would you say in Italian! Hi Tom, thank you for the video and I found this very useful. I'm learning English to improve my English test score for migration. I have been learning English since I was 4 years old. I used to make mistakes when applying the present perfect tense and the past simple tense into English writing or speaking. The golden rule to remember is that you use past simple to talk about things that are finished in the past. Present perfect tense is used when you are talking about things that have been happening from past to present. :)

I've lerned English since fourth grade or something, it's my second language though ( first lanugage is swedish since im a swede). Nowadays im 16 and goes " första ring på gymnasiet" witch probably equals your second last year in high school. I lern English because it's fun and also it's easier to travel to other countries when you know really good English. And I Love travel!! I have been relearning english since last january! 17 years ago, I used to have the english class in hight school. Afterwards, I was struggling all the time to improve my english level without any serious results.. so I just gave up ! I used to find it difficult to distinguish the difference between the use of “there is/are” and “there has/have” . Instead of writing : E.g. There are two apples on the table. I would write E.g. There have two apples on the table. Practice helps though.

In Viet Nam, we study English as a compulsory subject. I am 19 and i have studied English since i was 8. I used to think that it's not important to learn another language, except my mother tongue. I was lazy and i'm still bad at English. But now i realize that being good at English would bring me so many great chances of my life, my career,... especially watching movie without subtitle :))). Tom, the most common mistake that I make is related to the use of prepositions "in", "on" and "at". I am alway confusing about what's the correct form, in sentences like: "I saw this product in/on/at the website"; I bought this new shirt in/at/on that shop.

I'd also have said "I love listening to music". However, I heard a native speaker say "I love to travel". I also remember the songs "I love to love (but my baby just loves to dance)" from Tina Charles or "I love to hate you" from Erasure. I don't know if you had students doing like me, but I was told I sometimes speak like Yoda from Star Wars. I tend to open the phrase with the direct or indirect complement, then I put the subject and the verb. Like: The third mistake you talked about, it's something I often do.

These are all grammar issues that can be overcome in time. Correct use of the articles may be something that takes much more time and effort to master. From my perspective, the most difficult thing about English, which seems to be pretty simple at first, is the large synonymity (the subtle differences between several words meaning pretty much the same thing) and the collocations and phrases one has to learn by heart and sometimes use in the only correct way possible. Sometimes one still remains nonplussed because proverbs like 'dressed up to the nines' or 'raining cats and dogs' are impossible to understand (fathom) at first. This is a nice channel, good luck!

I used to say "I'm shorter than him", or "He's better than me", which are very common to even native speakers. In fact, I hear this quite often even on the radio or news. But I learnt that they're both wrong, and should be "I'm shorter than he (is)" and "He's better than I (am)".
