Questions to ask your sub-contractors on your initial phone call: - How big is your crew? - What type of work have you been doing? - What is your prep work protocol? - What does your turn-around time look like? - How many jobs can you do a week?

I had a painter look at/bid on 5 jobs and I added 25-30% onto his quote which would be my profit and I didn't get any of the jobs.. :/ Makes me now add only 15-20% onto his prices to see if I get something. I live in MA.

You're doing it wrong. Selling jobs (winning jobs) is NOT about the PRICE. You CANNOT lower your price to win jobs or you won't make any money. You need to know how to SELL. Great videos. I have a pretty successful window cleaning and pressure washing company and wanted to add Painting as one of my services. I am not too skilled on painting myself so how would I go about finding subcontractors to do jobs for me without me being able to do the work along side them, at least at the beginning stages of adding the service?

Usually, no. We just pay in full at the end of the project. Sometimes we'll provide the materials up front. Most of the jobs we are doing are completed within 3-5 days and we pay the day they finish. Many companies that subcontract don't pay out for 7 days, so it's fairly standard.

How seasonal is interior painting? I live in Toronto, Canada and I'm wondering if a painting business is year round. Are people still looking for work in the winter?

It's always slower in the winter because you only have interior painting instead of interior and exterior. But there is still work going on, just not as much. This is why I recommend hitting your goals during the better part of the season so the slow season is just a bonus.

@@zigzigzig ​ Yes, just like a client hires you for a set price and you buy materials. The subcontract is for a set price and that price includes labor and materials. But it's important to remember: whatever that amount is has to be a good price for them! If it's not, you won't attract anyone good to work for you. So there are no shortcuts.. This means you need to end up being a higher priced painter (which all larger companies are)... And to charge more money requires a more professional sales process... And a better marketing plan... It all ties together.

Are you calculating the hourly rate for subs base on one painter? If that’s the case wouldn’t they be making less than 30, 20 an hr? I mean they would have to pay other painters on their crew. I would like to know to see how I should pay my subs

It's per total man hour. 50 hour house is 50 hours for 1 guy or 25 for 2 guys or 10 guys working 5 hours... It's total man hours.

Overpaying is very bad advice. No one is going to stay on and take a pay cut when they do good professional work. Pay a helper who works alongside you and learns so you can gauge how much they are worth over time and whether you should increase their pay. But don't just say overpay.

What I mean by "overpay" is be generous with compensation. The best people are worth it, and expect to be paid well.
