Stay away from new construction if you’re new. Tough to make a profit margin about 30% and builders tend to take advantage of new folks.

Most painters are drunks, drug addicts, or worse. Most of the good painters have work booked out for months. I’m a painter in the Midwest.

That's not been my experience. Those people do exist, but there are also a lot of very hard working and honest painters. That's who I like to work with. If you have a hard time hiring or attracting great painters, it would be valuable to ask "why can't I seem to attract the good ones"?

The people you are describing exist in every industry. In rural areas they may be more prevalent but it does not mean highly professional people aren't present as well. I live in rural Indiana but I painted in Portland OR for 7 years. There is a contrast in the areas but if you aren't one of the people you described it will allow you to crush competition. If you cannot find good help then find young people to train from the bottom and give them lifelong skills to help them succeed.
