The cycling community is so plagued by elitism. It’s awesome to see someone who actually rides thousands of miles embracing affordable options. Let’s be honest, most of the super bikes out there spend the bulk of their time sitting unused in a garage by owners who prefer posting on bike forums.

I agree. As someone who commute to work on a bike I tend to see people like me and the cyclists I come across as different breeds. They're super snobby. It became clear when one of the doods who maintain my bike told me that those bunch rarely do anything and just hang out. It really made me think though..you spent 5k on the frame..thats 2 times more than my diverge as a whole bike altogether.

I work in a LBS and I cringe at what someone will spend ! I always try to steer people away from the most expensive bike and gear especially if they are buying just to ride on the weekends for a few hours. The only time I keep my mouth shut is when someone pulls up in their BMW or the like and has the shut up and serve me attitude then its game on get out that credit card MR or MRS Armstrong!!!

Isaac Hernandez so to be safe you need to buy a bike with a %400 markup? Fuck that man. The industry is way overpriced and it has nothing to do with safety. All it’s doing is making people rich on one side and other people looking like elitist dick heads on the other side. I say fuck the cycling industry. Buy used as much as you can.

Great video. I bought a set of Chinese wheels last year off Ebay, £290 the pair , weight 1350 gms the pair, excluding skewers. I've now completed around 2500 km on them, at least half on rubbish UK roads. They are just like yours. No spoke issues, still true, very little brake wear. In fact, they are , more or less, just like they came out of the box. I've also got a set of carbon aero bars and carbon saddle that have done the same distance. All still perfect. Case closed.

I'm glad your wheels have held up, but 2500km isn't exactly a lot of distance. I'd expect my new rims to be nearly perfect after maybe 6 weeks of riding. My front wheel is a Campagnolo Zonda C17 with around 13,000 miles ( @21,000 km) on it and has never been trued, and is still near perfect. My rear Zonda failed at the hub flange after only 7,000 miles (@11,000 km) which I consider unacceptable for a $400 wheelset (the roads where I live are pretty rubbish as well). I replaced the rear wheel at the beginning of the 2020 season with a Mavic Aksium, which cost around $135 and so far has held up well over the last 2300+ miles.
@artistglyn
@artistglyn 4 жыл бұрын
Since this post I've done another thousand or so. The rear went slightly off and I've had it trued, but other than that they've been perfect. I took Aksiums off to put these on. I use them as a winter wheel or on my turbo.

I've gotten these exact wheel after seeing the previous video , upgrading from some basic dt swiss training wheels. They don't offer the big overall speed advantage I had hoped but did increase the peak speeds a lot, from the low to mid forties, to the high forties to low fifties. If you want to go faster overall,get better tyres and better clothes, much more cost effective.
@TraceVelo
@TraceVelo 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is a fair point. If you want a cheaper way to go faster, def invest in some good rubber, makes all the difference. But yeah, buying these wheels won't make you crazy fast out of the gate, but I find they definitely help on longer flatter rides
@arhu74

@@TraceVelo seems the gains get bigger the faster you can get, if your average cruising speed is less than 30 km/h, the gain these wheels will give is insignificant but if your average cruising speed is 40 km/h these wheels will make a huge difference (probably in the order of around 5-7 km/h faster for the same effort, judging from my max speeds )

My assumption was that, that is how all brakes were supposed to be mounted. I am not sure if I am mistaken but usually you mount with the brakes with that angle to get both gradient and reduce squealing which is the trademark of all brakes that are mounted with full contact
@TraceVelo
@TraceVelo 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this is a fair point. But with all my aluminium rims, I always set up my pads to fully contact the rim, and never had any brake squeal at all. With carbon rims is the only time toeing the brakes in has been necessary for me.

Yes... just realize if your tubeless that your sealant will dry out quicker with rim brakes. Not good if you are completely dried out. Big climbs... hot countries... better to replace sealant every six months. My brother came over and we just stopped for a beer and we were looking at a bike I lent him... it was parked up in the sun... and would you believe it... the rear rim let out its air whilst we were watching it. So I know it happens. Some brake pads have channels. Good to make sure the channels are clean too. Just helps with brake efficiency. Loved the intro to your video... brilliant.

+1 up vote for the Prime brake pads. I bought a carbon wheelset that came with a set of blue pads (I guess they were those LifeLine ones but dunno). The braking performance was poor and they melted onto the rim depositing a blue stripe around the wheel, which degraded the braking further. When the front pads had worn down, I bought a set of those Prime pads and this transformed the braking to aluminium rim brake levels. Over time it even removed the blue stripe that I hadn't been able to clean off. The pads have lasted very well, nearly 2000 miles now. I don't them in the wet, aluminium rim braking is scary enough in the wet and this bike is my Sunday Best so it only goes on dry roads.
@TraceVelo
@TraceVelo 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I definitely agree with you. Been using a set of Swiss Stop Black Prince pads for the last few months, and now they have worn out, I've just switched back to prime pads yesterday. The prime ones are actually a little better IMO, they stop nicely, the braking performance doesn't degrade as much when the heat is on, and they don't squeal as much under heavy braking. Also just FYI, to clean that built up braking compound from carbon rims, use Acetone (nail polish remover). Gets it right off, but be careful, because if you have any decals, it will strip them right off aswell!

Since finding and watching your first video, I became a fan and can't wait for the next one. For us who don't have the means in buying a full carbon branded £1000+ bikes, thank you very much. I am in the process of building a bike and 100% will use Chinese carbon frameset and wheelset. Just have a few questions for you which will serve as my guide in finding the right components for my build. 1. What is the external width of your rims and the size of the tyres you paired them with? And, 2. Going back to your first video, what was the weight of your complete bike? I know that you mentioned that the frameset weighed around 1000 grams. Once again, thank you and more power to you.
@TraceVelo
@TraceVelo 5 жыл бұрын
Thats awesome, so glad you like the videos! But yeah that's my whole ethos, people who dont have £1000's lying around can get put off getting into road cycling, but im hoping to show there are other routes into decent carbon bike parts. So the external width of my rims is 25mm, and the tyres I put on are 700x25c . Also the total weight of my bike is around 8.4kg. So not super light, but if you wanted to get some shallower rims, and throw some more money at a higer end groupset, you could shave off quite alot of weight.

Loctite 222 on the nipples after truing can help keep the wheel true. It 's a wicking threadlocker. Also if you want less notching on the freehub you need to grease and torque the cassette lockring properly. When right torque is applied the pressure spreads over multiple cogs. For anyone considering chinese wheels the latest generations now offer textured brake tracks for rain braking. Basalt tracks and other surface treatments will wear out. Use campagnolo red pads to optimize braking wity any rim. Ideally you wany a good combination of brake surface + calipers + pads. Most people get one wrong and blame all wheels and/or switch to disc brakes needlessly. One last point. That spoke key is terrible. You can destroy alloy nipples with that. Don't turn any nipple unless you have a snug fit. Rear drive side spokes being very high tensioned usually get their nipples destroyed first. Ideally get a spoke key with a 3 corner profile. Thanks for the video.

Yeah good observation! So I actually keep the brake release levers open because the aluminium wheels I use in the rain have a much narrower rim, so when I swap them out I don't have to fiddle too much with the brake cable. I can just close the levers, and the brake caliper fits the narrower rims. Also you're totally right about the spokes, i always hold them with pliers, prob should have mentioned that in the video. Had my own rear wheel built with Chinese deep section carbon rim. Mine has alloy brake track on R36 carbon alloy hub. Built with CX Ray it's a great wheel, no regrets. My front wheel is a Campagnolo Vento, 98 version which is why I went for alloy brake track on the rear.

On the freehub just file the bites down and get a bunch more miles out of it. Bearing wise don't use cheap bearings. It's really worth getting some better quality ones as they're built to a much higher tolerance and with decent dust and moisture shielding and you've got a quality set of wheels. Bearings are probably the biggest down side of cheap wheels but one of the simplest things to replace just don't skimp on them it's not worth the steadily increasing drag and rapid wear. Rough guide is about £10 a bearing and you'll have a wheel that lasts and lasts and lasts.

Good stuff, great production value. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to more content along these lines, many manufacturers from China that put out brand name products also make their own OEM stuff that is just as good at a fraction of the price. It's a good niche to explore

4:55 Is that split in the tyre dangerous? I have it on my michelin pro4 endurance after 2000km, and I'm unsure if that's a reason to replace it. Thank you for your entertaining and informative videos on chinese carbon. I'm considering building the same bike as yours.
@TraceVelo
@TraceVelo 5 жыл бұрын
Awesome, glad you like the videos!! So I had a look, and that's not a split, it's just where the tyre construction alters down the side wall. But yeah if you do have a split, definitely replace it, could be super dodgy if the tyre blows off the rim at high speed...
@davidsture5677
@davidsture5677 4 жыл бұрын
If you have a split/wear right above the rim it's often caused by improper brake pad set up and you may be rubbing the sidewall of your tire when you are braking

A trick to toe in your brake pads. Take two rubber bands of the same size and tie a know in them making a small loop of the same size in one end of the rubber band (think of a figure 8). Take the small loop and put it around the rear end of each pad in the same location, the set your pads. You will now have the same toe in on both pads.

@TraceVelo
@TraceVelo 5 жыл бұрын
Awesome, thanks Reggie! But yeah, so you could potentailly upgrade the hubs, but then you are looking at the cost of new hubs and spokes, and paying someone to re-build the wheel for you (unless you build it yourself). Basically if you want to go down this route, i would reccomend you buy the bare rim, alot of ebay sellers offer them :)

Re: Bike shop servicing, I bought a second hand set of Zipp 404 (alu brake track) for £300 and they are absolute SOB's to get tyres onto (Gatorskins for the rough roads around me), so its the 'expensive' brands as well. Still they are nice wheels.

+1 for the Prime pads. I have a set of their carbon 50mm's on my Roadbike ( See profile for picture ) and never had a single issue with them. that squealing you mentioned must be down to the the wheels as I have my pads set up flush & parallel with the rim and not once have they ever squealed.

Great video and I especially liked the drone shots. As much as I do like your bike, I look forward to when manufacturers start going back to using color in their frames. Hi Luke - great stuff. Like many here I am done with the hyper expensive bike world. Let's be clear, most good products are not cheap; labour and good R&D deserve to be paid for their efforts and ingenuity, but the cycling world has leapfrogged any sense of rational for fair pricing. You have done a great job of dispelling the fear propaganda which was/is seems to be the status quo's weapon against Chinese parts. Ok - in actually fact I commented on this particular video to try to see if anyone knows if the prime brake pads are still available as I cannot find them across many sites (amazon ali ebay...).

Why would I buy cheap carbon wheels for £300 when I can buy more expensive ones for £2000+ . Mmm ok I get your point. Met a fella the other day salivating over a bike he was looking at & he said it cost £7k. When I got back home I Goggled his and that cost £5k so it seems when you pay out good money theres always the next one up. Think I would rather comply with your advice and go Chinese as it seems to me that you can save yourself a boat load of money and still have a good bike. Another great video TV thanks.

Most of them are probably fine, great even. I do know someone who had unbranded chinese wheels delaminate during a race. He didn't crash immediately but got neutral support wheels which were narrower, in the heat of the race he forgot to adjust the brakes and later did crash as a result. He was ok but but the point is that they shouldn't fail on one steep but short (~1 minute) descent. Having said that, there are good ones and bad ones, and if you ride in an area where there isn't much elevation change or are riding discs it probably doesn't matter.
