@TheChaChingKing Жыл бұрын
You can do it! The trick to shipping odd stuff is to have your packaging worked out beforehand and have it on hand. My son sells a lot of vintage tech and he has boxes that work perfectly. Shipping an 8 pounds IBM Model M keyboard isn't much harder than shipping a t-shirt when you have everything here.
@GrinderCB2 жыл бұрын
One thing the local post office workers told me is that for an item to go as a "package" as opposed to a "letter" was the 3/4-inch thickness. I sell a lot of flat items like collectible magazines, comic books, etc, that often go in envelopes. They advised me to insert a couple pieces of cardboard to make it over 3/4 inch thick without adding much weight.
@TheChaChingKing2 жыл бұрын
Interesting tidbit that I did not know. THANKS!
@jeremiahblundon4877 Жыл бұрын
As a Postal Employee I can confirm this. The reason it matters is I believe tracking for a flat (magazine)/letter is a fixed rate; usually around $8-$9, as it's not based on weight but putting tracking on something that doesn't normally come with tracking. So making it thicker to qualify it as a package could reduce shipping costs. This is my understanding as a Carrier, a Clerk would be able to give you a more specific on prices for a letter/flat. To my understanding the only options for tracking on letters/flats is Certified which needs a signature for $8 or a small envelope that has a tracking number on it and you put your letter in the envelope, which costs around $9.

@jeremiahblundon487710 ай бұрын
@@madmax8620 tracking for a letter is more expensive. You’re paying a flat rate of $8-$9 as a letter for tracking even if it’s going down the street. Making it a package can make it cheaper to ship by almost half the price.

Great video! I'm wanting to sell items on eBay, but my biggest question is how to set pricing. I work in e-commerce, and we ship on our client's FedEx or UPS accounts, so having to worry about boxes and shipping prices is not important. I'm going to check out your other video "Shipping is Confusing" to see what content you have there.
@TheChaChingKing Жыл бұрын
I arrive at pricing by looking for some info on ebay. First, I'll search for the item to see if there are active listings. I take note of how many are listed. Second, I'll filter the search results by SOLD. I compare how many are sold to the number listed. This gives me a sell-through rate. The higher the sell-through rate, the faster i can hope to sell it. Also, I look to see the range of prices the item sold for. I adjust my price considering the condition of mine and how long I'm willing to wait to sell it.
@JohnProthero Жыл бұрын
@@TheChaChingKing Thanks. I guess I was too vague in the word "pricing", because I meant the shipping cost. I would assume that using USPS and their flat rate cartons, most of that is pre-determined. I know that UPS and FedEx use Dimensional Shipping, which can cost a lot for a large package, even if it's light-weight.

Ive watched this video 3x and will probably watch it another 3. Its very helpful. My main issue right now and choosing the price for shipping on my listings. I saw you last video where you talk about different weights and pricing, but how do you know how much its going to weigh ahead of time, if you dont know which box you are using. Also, do the flat rate boxes always have the same price for their assigned size? Thank you Scot for all the help. Because of your channel, I am actually taking the plunge of starting my resale journey.
@TheChaChingKing2 жыл бұрын
You are so kind! I truly appreciate it. I know a lot of the weights just from experience. But you can always weigh the item and add some for the box and packing. It won't be exact, but it will probably be very close. There are two types of flat rate USPS boxes. The true flat rate ones, like the padded flat rate and the medium flat rate, have a specific charge regardless of where they are going or how much they weigh. The Regional Rate A & B boxes charge 2 pounds and 5 pounds respectively. So, they vary some depending on where they are going. So, if you have an item under 15 pounds that fits in a Regional Rate A box, it'll get charged at the 2 pound rate. And, above all else, it WILL get easier with more experience. Don't be afraid to make a mistake. I still make mistakes. But I'm smarter with every one.

Why do you have to purchase the shipping label if buyer has paid for shipping? Shipping is by far the most daunting thing about ebay. I never know what to charge.
@TheChaChingKing18 күн бұрын
The buyer paid YOU for shipping, not the post office. So, the post office wants their money. You end up paying for it out of the money collected from the buyer. I understand. It's daunting. And, whenever I put out a video trying to explain what I do, lots of folks chime in that they do it differently. :-) I try to do all of it as simply as possible while making sure that the customer isn't ever left without their package... if I can.

I have 2 videos that talk about shipping. The first one covers some of the costs more in depth. But, keeping it short, if it's under 8 ounces, I ship it first class for about $4.99. Between 8 ounces and 16 ounces, I charge $5.99. If it's over a pound but fits in a USPS padded flat rate envelope, I charge $8.99. If it doesn't fit in the padded flat rate, I usually aim for the Regional Rate A box and charge $11.99. I'm not trying to get them exact, just close enough to be fair. Does that help? Thanks so much for the kind words!!!

Hey Scott, thank you for all your great info. Question though, what is a regional A box for? How do you use it? I've always seen it but never knew anything about it so I never considered it. Help!!
@TheChaChingKing2 жыл бұрын
It ships at a flat rate based on distance instead of weight. I think it is the 2 pound rate regardless of how much it weighs. So, if I had something that weighed 7 pounds shipping to Hawaii and it would fit in the Regional Rate A box, it would be far cheaper than just shipping in at the regular weight. Does that make sense? It's not always cheaper, but really can be.
@marlalindsted62992 жыл бұрын
@@TheChaChingKing Yes that makes sense! Thank you so much for clarifying.

Thank you. I recently lost most of my profit with the cost of shipping a belt. I used a small flat rate box but decided to use the flat rate for buyer on the listing. Uggghhh! Now you taught me to weigh the items and put in the dimensions when listing an items so this doesn’t happen again. I guess my misconception was thinking buyers won’t pay a flat rate box shipping cost when they are already paying for the item at the asking price. I’m a newbie so I’m still learning. 😊

I'm wondering if I misinterpreted something. With the Carhartt jacket, you made a change with the box size and adjusted the shipping weight, correct? The larger box was cheaper than the smaller one or did I really misunderstand this example? :) Thank you! ~Jules

I was wondering the same thing...
@TheChaChingKing2 жыл бұрын
I probably just wasn't clear. It just would not fit in the smaller box. So, I cut out all of that trying to keep the length of the video watchable. But, it just wouldn't go in the smaller box, at all. The bigger box seemed cheaper because it weighed one pound less than my estimate.
@jag44422 жыл бұрын
@@TheChaChingKing Next question: When you create a listing, are you entering shipping weight for a more accurate amount or just guesstimating at the approximate cost?
@TheChaChingKing2 жыл бұрын
Most of the time, we know the shipping weight just from experience. The rest we make an educated guess. For example, i know if an item fits in my 12x9 ziplock, it will fit in either my poly mailer or the priority padddd flat rate. So, ultimately, on those items i only need to know if it's under or over a pound. If I really can't estimate it, I weigh it.

Good observation! I have never included a packing label unless I've been asked to. One of the worst reasons in the world to do, or not do, something is because that's what you've always done. Lol. But it isn't the only reason. While it might eventually happen, it has never caused an issue for me. Despite thousands of sales, it's just never come up. So, I don't include a packing slip.

@TheChaChingKing2 жыл бұрын
For me, it's more about the percentage to the overall sale. Like the example in the video. The overcharge was close to 5% of the overall sale. If it had been a $1,200 item, I probably wouldn't have refunded anything if the overcharge was $6.

Such an incredible video displayed. Most KZbinrs fail to be so effective and efficient at once. Your videos provide both at a high degree. I inquire about a couple things things 1. Everything works even in Canada right? I assume the shipping costs to the US will just be more 2. When you pay for the shipping label, one it allows you to print the label, but it also becomes your "ticket" so that Ebay ships it for you. So essentially, you don't have to be doing too much? 3. How do I know which shipping deal I should go with? Thank you very much
@TheChaChingKing Жыл бұрын
1. Canada has access to some of the same international services. That said, I personally think Canada gets some of the highest shipping costs...just judging from how much it costs a Canadian to buy from me. 2. Once the buyer pays for an item, I buy and print the shipping label from the funds that they have paid. The cost is based on the weight and dimensions of the item combined with the shipping distance. You get a very healthy discount on shipping through eBay. And all I have to do is either have the package picked up or drop it off at our post office. 3. As long as you have packed it well and haven't committed to an expedited shipping method, use the one that is most cost effective. Even when I give buyers the option of paying for a faster service, very few don't choose the least expensive. Thank you SO much for the kind words. :-)
