They used to have these laptops at my high school. Before they handed them to the students they wiped off vista and installed windows xp for a while and then upgraded them to windows 7.

The t60 has a regular carbon fibre lid, it's just the skeleton that is magnesium (it has a skeleton roll cage under the lid cover)

I never understood, if Ubuntu MATE was to be pronounced that way, it would be spelled as MATÈ Because MATE without the "È" is just pronounced "M8".

+Dustin Schings Exactly right. If they wanted it pronounced "Ma Tay", they needed to use the accentuation mark, indicating the alternate pronunciation. Other wise it's just "M8"

The Mate name is in reference to the South America tea Yerba Mate. It’s for that reason alone it’s not pronounced m8 buttttttttt I personally don’t think it matters.

I'm still using my Thinkpad Z61p machines in 2018 and they work great! I recently was tempted to buy one of these titanium models, but saved my money and put it towards a mint condition custom order W520 instead. I sold a fully upgraded G40 earlier this year, but still need to sell more to trim down my Thinkpad collection of around ten machines. Once you buy your first it sure will not be your last! You have been warned!

Good vid! I occasionally buy these classics especially when there in excellent condition. The classic Thinkpad's were always my favorites but could never afford one when they were 3K or more.. I finally can now when they are around $25 though :)

I agree. The older Thinkpads were/are great machines. I'm slowly collecting some of them. The newest Thinkpad I have is a T430, working backwards from there...Still need the T420, T410. I do have an X220T, X201, T400. Still watching for good deals on others. Prices are starting to go up on them pretty high because people are finding out that the new stuff is junk, as well as with SSD's, a RAM upgrade, and Windows 10, you can get these older machines to run pretty good.

I have found T61's (or Z) are far more underrated than many know, as the later chipsets allow them to use the 800mhz type of RAM (as opposed to 667mhz) as well as take up to 8gb (4gb x2). In addition the chipset allows them to be upgraded to the T9300@2.5 cpu's. Any higher they wont boot. They also are said to have been shipped with a small percentage of bad video chips that tended to fail. The T61 and T61p are seriously overbuilt internally. Maybe a video showing this upgrade might be educational content.

The Z range are actually almost identical to the T60 range. The T61 is the next generation model with a newer chipset etc.

According to Lenovo's specs on the T60, it'll take a maximum of 4GB RAM, then again I think that's the largest memory module that was made back the...several older systems that maxed out at 4GB RAM are actually able to be upgraded to 8GB or more for some....a lot of that depends on the hardware limitations of the system itself so mostly a trial and error process on many systems.

You could, but the X201 will run windows 10 just fine. I updated mine to a 240GB SSD and 4GB RAM, and its running windows 10 pretty well. The Chrome OS is a great alternative though if you would rather go that direction with it.

You can put 4GB of RAM in T60. But you must install 64 bit system. You can run 4GB on 32 bit linux if you install PAE version of kernel (mostly used in servers).

Because Linux is Free is why its used so often on these systems. Its a free OS so testing out unkown systems and selling them relatively cheap Linux is the way to go....another alternative would be the Chrome OS.
