Try removing the battery, disconnect power, push the power button, then plug in power while holding the Fn key. This resets a power issue according to the user manual. Another thing is to try toggling the external/projection key while the external display is connected. I would also try booting with no RAM or HDD, force at least one known error and test the screens that way... It seems like the LED indicators might be an error code or symptom worth researching, so I did some digging and that's what I came up with so far. I miss rebuilding IBM Thinkpads!
@johnmoreton4594 жыл бұрын
If you don’t get a POST beep or 3 beeps the cpu board is defective. You could get another operating board from a parts machine and test again. It was put out of service because it died. I don’t know if IBM still services this machine. I used to have one, and worked on many of those computers I used to work on larger systems

Be careful when buying a P71, I own one and the transmission blew out on it. Police push those things. I have the 2005 model and they made 13 different transmissions that year and only 4 of them are swapable with the police package. They use a non standard connector for the electronic shift so you must use a 2005 4l60e and they are not cheap or easy to come by. Buy one from 2004 or earlier (pre 2000's have an issue with a melted plastic intake manifold though) or after 2007 and you should be fine. Other than a few other issues they are fun gas guzzling land yachts. Excellent handling and overall strong machines.

I also just bought a IBM ThinkPad 365XD, ironic. The FM synth from the onboard audio is awesome. These are nice machines, although they have more plastic than the 700 series IBM ThinkPads. 300 series was the entry-level. Entry level in IBM land was high end compared to the typical PC laptop though. It's important to be delicate with the 365XD as some of the structural plastic is fairly thin.

6:52 I know that when the resume battery leaks in a 760 series, it would think the keyboard lid is always open, so it would only display on a second monitor, and would go to sleep while starting up. I wish I could reverse-engineer the "keyboard card" (that's what the service manual actually calls it) and produce some reproduction cards as drop-in replacements.

I'm still trying to confirm, but I want to say that, that model 365 (possibly 360) was the one used by one of the infamous Pentagon spies. Just try starting it without the cmos battery and the actual battery with the power adapter plugged in, there’s a good chance that that may do it. Also as many others have suggested plug it into and external display (don’t disconnect the internal display tho, there’s no real point since if when there was no external monitor you didn’t get anything to display it won’t be any different plugging in an external one)

Better procedure: - test power supply under load - Reflow all boards to eliminate tin whiskers - replace all batteries - change all barrel shaped capacitors and large diodes. - identify power circuits and test for failed resistors and fuses. He could have at least made a basic effort.
@Henry56235 жыл бұрын
Given the fact he had limited time and money as well as other more pertinent life priorities to worry about I would say he VERY MUCH SO made a admirable effort above and beyond what most would do. He was $55 dollars into the laptop to start with. Going through the effort to re-cap the board after the expense of attempting to find the right capacitors to start with as well as the hassle of re-flowing a board and testing circuits is going beyond the scope of his purposes for trying to rescue this laptop to start with. Even more so given the fact that if he could find one for $55 dollars obviously they are still able to be found so going to the ends of the world trying to bring the system back to operational condition, at great cost, especially with no long term plans of even keeping the system to start with isn't justified. Please think before you cast judgement upon others. Common sense 101...

@Henry56235 жыл бұрын
Absolutely no bluetooth keyboards will work with a 365XD given the fact that consumer grade laptops with bluetooth capabilities didn't hit the market till almost a decade after the 365XD was produced. Even if you did get a bluetooth adapter for the 365XD you'd never find drivers for it to make it work. As far as USB keyboards you MIGHT be able to get a PS2 to USB adapter to allow you to use a USB keyboard with the 365XD. Or you could just go on Ebay and find a cheap PS2 keyboard and that should work. Also if your looking for hardware drivers for the 365XD you can easily search on google and find thinkpad drivers that thinkpad fan bases have cataloged for you to use depending on what OS you have installed.

That's the big thing officially keeping me from pulling the trigger. Driving a Vic would double my fuel expenses, so $40 a week instead of $20. I know a lot of people say Ford's are unreliable, but we have a 06 Expedition with 135K on it and have had zero issues with it besides general maintenance. If I could get one cheap enough (under $1500) I would definitely consider it. At $2500 to $3000 it's a lot harder to justify.
