They can one way or another, HOWEVER you have to know how to get around the rules for that to happen & so many people just don’t think a certain way, I’ve read Alota times ppl saying things like “seller doesn’t accept returns! 🤬 so I’m angry!”

Thank you so much! I didn’t know there was a third (buyer pays shipping) return option! For some reason I thought the options were only Free Returns or No Returns. Oops! I do not accept returns on eBay. But I have never refused a return in eBay. My mindset is that I want buyers to read the whole description and make sure it’s what they are looking for without a cavalier attitude about returning for free. But when people request a return (for any reason-fit, arrived too late, not quite the color they thought it was on screen), I accept the return without question. I have noticed that every time I accept a return (my rate is about 2.2%), I immediately sell something else or many things that I wouldn’t expect. I think accepting the return bumps my items in the algorithm. After watching this, I might switch to Buyer Paid Retirns.... hmmm 🤔

Hi Deirdre, Yes I agree with your thinking. Returns are so tricky on ebay. I have Buyer Paid Returns if it's for fit. If I make a mistake, or the buyer thinks I made a mistake, or they mis-label their reason for return, then I pay shipping because ebay automatically accepts the return for any kind of "not as described" issue. It's so tricky. I don't get many returns so I just accept it and move on. xo Quenby

Great information Quenby, very clear about the pros & cons of different policies! My main reason for offering free returns is the Top Rated Seller+ designation, which gets a small fee discount and a special badge on the listing (LOL).

Ive been selling on Poshmark for a couple of years now, hesitant to go to Ebay for just this issue. Well I jumped in the Ebay pool last week and have 5 items now listed. After watching you and another reseller talk about the how and why of accepting returns, I've decided that I will go with the policy you use. It seems fair enough, and I can likely get more sales. Yay, good luck on ebay. Do your best to not sweat the returns and accept them as part of the cost of selling on ebay and hopefully you will make so much more on ebay than posh that it will be worth a few returns. Thank you!

So I guess we can’t NOT accept returns for say buyers remorse & still have the option to have buyers pay for return shipping. But honestly I had a recent huge headache from a buyer who was a scammer, who bought a high end purse from me actually said the reason she wanted her money back was bc of the color, huge red flag #1! HOWEVER I Immediately accepted the return & she was sent a label that she never printed & she never sent the bag back & red flag #2 was the exact next day she filed a chargeback w PayPal Red flag #3 was when she had the gall to leave me negative feedback stating “seller SAYS she accepts returns & I would’ve paid to send it back but seller ghosted me!” She never sent it back, she got her refund, she left me negative feedback AND it affected my seller rating. Bc everything she said absolutely never happened! It’s a double edged sword & it sucks. “Nervous” is a very nice way of saying it!

Ugh I am so sorry. What a nightmare you have been through. I have been through my share of issues with buyers and returns. To answer your questions, Yes you can have a "no returns" policy for fit/remorse. You can. The issue with that is that when we don't accept returns for fit/remorse, many buyers will opt to say it was Item Not As Described to force the return. Sad but true. So I choose to accept returns. If a customer wants to return it, they will find a way. Mostly, I have wonderful experiences with buyers. It's sad a few bad apples come along now and then. Thanks! Quenby

Thanks for this, I’m definitely going to work on my return policy as I am only now trying to list more on eBay. I completely agree with the mindset of limiting stress. For example, I see how upset people get by lowball offers and they will block people for it, I just see it as a jumping off point that may turn into a sale or not. It’s just part of business. There’s no need to take offense, I didn’t make this stuff.

EXACTLY. I don't understand that attitude myself. Of course if there is an offer button, people are going to use it and try and get a good deal. And sometimes , when people are clearing out, they will accept a really low offer. I just counter and move on. xo Quenby

Just as you said I've still accepted many returns and had to pay for it. Thank you for the information. I do believe I will now be accepting returns with the buyer accepting shipping. 😉

I just got a return last night and she was honest enough to select "fit" for the reason for return on the jeans. Thankfully I have my return policy as buyer pays shipping for fit, so i am not out $8 to ship to her, and $8 to ship back to me. xo Quenby

My biggest worry with accepting returns is people not packing the product correctly. As you say, it's fine to get it back; one can always relist it EXCEPT if it's an item that gets easily damaged during shipping 😫

I know. Returns are hard on so many levels. I agree with you. I just don't see a way around them. I get clothes back with Makeup stains or other issues, and I LOVE ebay, really I do, and I am so grateful, but they almost always side with the buyer so I rarely ask them to step in, plus it's a defect on your account if they need to step in soooooo....I accept and move on with my life. xo Quenby

I used to sell on eBay when they first came out. For me, I think Poshmark is easier. I've been wanting to get back to eBay on some pieces that aren't selling on Posh but some of their policies steer me away. This gives me something to reconsider. Thanks for sharing your eBay knowledge.

@@TheGratefulQueen I think the biggest thing for me off the top of my head is figuring out shipping cost ahead of time. I like that PM has a flat fee up to 5lbs. I'll have to watch your shipping video. Yes please do an eBay video for beginners-that would be very helpful for me. I'll have to think of other eBay topics. Thanks so much!

Years ago, I ebayed for a large industrial company. I was selling an average of $25,000 per month. The owner/my boss decided after I took in 3 returns of non-working items made me change 6500 listings (before the age of bulk revisions) to NO RETURNS. Buyers don't know who we were, our honesty/reliability level and want the option for returns. Our sales immediately fell to about $5,000 per month. He is no longer in business, for that and some other idiotic reasons.

I really appreciate this comment. I tried no returns in 2020 and it was a disaster. When customers see no returns, and they get anxious about losing their money, they might act out. The concern I feel in acceptance of returns is that unfortunately enough will exploit and take advantage of it. eBay likes what is easiest for THEM; their bottom line, and seems skewed in favor of buyers over sellers. Most buyers are honest, but if one gets more into higher rates of returns, it can adversely affect the seller in their pocket. This can be especially so I feel for smaller volume sellers and that has to be a consideration in setting your policy.

I agree with you! In my experience ebay sides with the buyer almost every single time so....if we know that is true, and ebay will allow the return, and accept it in favor of the buyer....then we might as well accept returns in our store because they are going to get through anyway. even if you set a NO Returns policy, ebay will push the return through for the buyer if they request its . I have to just accept the system if I want to sell on ebay and I do want to sell on ebay I love ebay so...returns are part of the gig

Hi Quenby, Awesome video, I was just thinking how did that work out for you, and if you ever decided to try “does not accept returns “. I was thinking if I wanted to try that, but glad I watched your video before I changed anything... I’m sticking with send it back, but they pay shipping. Just had one that said it was smaller (a vase) then expected.... I had the measurements right in the photos.... and it was an item I gave them a deal on for $10!!! So I said sure send it back to me in CT from Cali... cost them $10 just to send the thing back...., but whatever, going to relist and set the price higher...!!! Lol... thanks for sharing... and finally got my Rollo set up... OMG... love it! I was so busy it sat in the box for 3 months....!!! But up and running now and really love it... !!! Yes, I tried "no returns" and it was a total FAIL. i I said a lot more about it in the video but edited it out because I don't want to scare new sellers who already fear returns. It was horrible because I got so many long winded emails and "item not as described" cases because that was the only way ebay would accept a return was if it was item not as described so buyers took advantage of it. No, Ebay doesn't let you have a " No Returns" policy. Because they have a 30 day money back policy & pass that on to the seller. They will FORCE you to take a return or freeze your funds. Just make sure to print out the reciepts for your taxes at the end of the year as that Is a business loss If you then don't resell that Item.

Yes, you are correct. You can technically choose "no returns" as your policy as a seller on ebay, but ebay will always push a return through for the buyers, which is one big reason I suggest accepting returns . Agreed!

question - do you indicate that the item needs to be returned in same condition as it was sent to the buyer? like if it was new with tags must it be sent back new with tags?

this is what it says in ebay's return policy for the customer: "Keep in mind that the condition of the item you send back to the seller is important, so repack it carefully. If you return the item used, damaged, missing parts, or damaged during return shipping because it wasn't packaged correctly, sellers may deduct from your refund to cover the loss in the item's value. For more information, see our Condition of returned items policy." You could choose to put this in your desccription of your listing, but I don't

If a buyer sent back the wrong item, I would call ebay. If you call, and ebay does not side with you, call back again and talk to someone else and see if you can get them to understand your side. That is all you can do. It is rare to be scammed on ebay like this, but it does sometimes happen. Try calling again and talking to a new ebay rep and seeing if they can help you. Quenby

Yes. Ebay can overturn it. If the buyer says "item is not as described" then ebay will always accept the return. In my opinion, there is no point having a "no return" policy because ebay will put it through.

People no longer read the listings. I put EVERYTHING in my listings. I actually had to close one of my online custom item businesses because people simply were not reading the listings. I have chosen not to take returns because all of the information a person needs is in the listing. If it's my mistake I gladly return it at my cost. Otherwise, buyer's remorse because of their mistake does not work for me.

Hi Joe, thanks for the comment I appreciate the feedback. That is a great question, what to do if something is tampered with......to be honest with you, I sell clothing that is pretty low dollar, and so i usually just accept the return and move on because in my 10 years of ebay selling, ebay always sides with the buyer. It's usually not worth my time and energy. If i sold higher ticket items, I would send photos to ebay of the tampered with item and fight it, or you might do it on pricipal if you are up for the fight and possible negative feedback from the buyer. I love ebay! but i don't love their return policy. Quenby

What does your return policy say? I have a video on setting your return policy ahead of time. It does not hurt your account unless the buyer gives you negative feedback it could hurt your account.

Been on eBay since they started. The Scammer stories I can tell you. Most recently, sold a sealed, brand new blu-ray movie, Milk. Buyer receives, opens, maybe watched it...and! No Warning! Opens a case against me. eBay of course allowed this. Their argument? "This is not my type of movie. I would not have bought this had I known." Did you think it was about the Dairy Industry? Starring Sean Penn??? Academy Awards, what? I refunded them, knew I'd not win this ridiculous case, blocked them. They never said Thank You or left ANY feedback. And that's just the tip of the iceberg on SCAMMERS I can tell you about on eBay, it's gotten way worse over the years too for Sellers. I actually switched to selling on Mercari (@t for $10 off), I've had MUCH more luck on there lately. Less competition. Still scammers tho.

ARgh sorry to hear about the scammers on ebay. I have been on the platform 10 years and I have had so few myself. I have def had people wear clothes and then return, and that is frustrating, but rare. It might depend on what you sell. And Yes, I think ebay takes customers side 99% of the time, but all that said, I still appreciate ebay. Thanks for your comment Quenby

Does your listing say seller pays free returns? I know i will have my share but I dont really think its necessary to broadcast that on listing. I cant find any videos to show me how to change my settings. I use printify print on demand and ebay. I have free shipping and it shows seller pays returns. should i leave it this way? thank you Queen. Dan

It's all a matter of personal preference. No I don't write it in my description. A buyer will see my return policy in the listing specifics. You can edit your return policy right in the listing under the return section. I offer buyer paid returns (unless I am at fault then I pay shipping)

I've been selling since July. I don't have a store and I have it set as no returns accepted. Although I have accepted a few. I have not had many. I am going through them all and adding buyer pays return shipping but in my description I add that I will accept free returns if it was a mistake I made or a hole or stain I overlooked. Depending on what it is I just tell them to keep it and I refund them. Someone returned a shirt saying it wasn't yellow but orange. No argument I just paid for the label immediately.

That sounds smart to me. For my personally, I prefer to accept the return and refund and move on with my life. I call it No Hassle returns. It does help my business when I get a return for "did not fit" that the buyer pays return shipping on that so I don't lose out on the shipping both ways,. Thanks! Quenby

What do you do about a buyer who opens a return request before even receiving the item,its in transit to the buyer? They changed their mind about it. If you have a couple of days to respond to the request and the item wont be delivered til after the case will close.

Are you the buyer? Or the seller? And it depends on the reason for return. If the seller is at fault, the seller pays for shipping. The return must be started through Ebay.

That depends on the reason for the return. If it's the seller's fault obviously the seller needs to refund the shipping.

I've only sold 2 pieces of clothing on Ebay so far and both of them were returned back to me because the buyers just didn't like it. I have the same return policy that you mentioned in this video. I'm kind of turned off of ebay now I don't know if it's worth it because my return rate on Poshmark is 1% or less.

Oh PLEASE don't give up on ebay. There is so much potential on ebay to make money. That is very rare to have sold 2 and got 2 returned. Do you mostly sell hard goods? Do you have any idea why the clothing might have been returned? Was there enough good info in your listings so the buyer knew what they were getting? Just troubleshooting. xo Quenby

It depends what you have your policy set to on ebay. I have another video about setting your return policy. I have my policy to "accepts returns, buyer pays shipping" . That way if a buyer has remorse, or just doesn't like it, or it doesn't fit, I don't have to eat the shipping. Now. if yo usent a damaged item or something then YES you have to accept the return.

I've got a return that has my available funds at -$1756. I put no returns and they stated "item not as described." If I accept the return do I have to pay all of it immediately? Also I didn't even receive that much for my sale. Would I get charged the entire 1756? Or just what I was paid after taxes & fees?

You will be charged the ENTIRE amount including shipping there and back IF they put item as not described. You Dont have Choice to accept it or not if its INAD ebay will automatically accept it.

I've been selling shoes on eBay for about 2 years now and my returns have gone way up recently for some reason. My return rate is 5.67% right now. I offer free returns and I'm thinking about changing it to buyer pays for return shipping but I'm worried my sales will drop because of it... ugh. I'm not sure why I've been getting so many returns recently, they are all "doesn't fit" returns. Do you have any suggestions on how to reduce returns? I feel like my return rate on shoes is higher than average right now. I only ever get them on eBay. I've never gotten a single return on Poshmark or Mercari.

That was my issue too, that my returns were all for "doesn't fit" and then I had to eat shipping. My personal choice is to have a policy that is BUYER PAYS SHIPPING when the reason is does not fit. Obviously I pay shipping if I make a mistake and it's IND. I think the best you can do is TRY IT for a few months and makes notes to see if your sales actually do drop. It is probably true that if you offer free shipping and free returns, ebay bumps you up in search. I personally did not notice a drop in sales with free returns. I think you could experiment for a few months and that is the way you would know. 5% return rate is higher than normal for clothes, which average is 3%, but shoe places like zappos all have free returns so customers might expect it with shoes and take advantage. I would try buyer pays return shipping but I like having the extra seller protection from being a top-rated plus seller. I appreciate the reply!

And lets say ,you sold your item under "No return" and customer opened return case 47 days after receiving the item saying the item was defected? Do you have to accept this kinda return too? Thanks!

Even if a seller has a "no return" policy, if the buyer claims it is defected, or not as described, ebay will accept the return on your behalf. If I sold a sweater with a big hole in it, I can't then say "sorry no returns" because the buyer would have paid for a defective item. The buyer deserves a return in that case and ebay will push it through. Your situation is unique because it has been longer than the usual 30 day return window. Are you able to communicate with the buyer through messages and try to work it out?

So my question is this what I have to put in the description and the comments underneath my listing, after I put I accept returns within 30 days and the buyer pays for the shipping do I put a little description under the item that I will pay the return shipping if item is not described I don't know. This is totally optional. I have seen experienced sellers do it all kinds of different ways. The buyer should see your return policy on the listing under the price and shipping and returns info and also when they pay. So, it is their responsibility to understand your policy. But if you want to help them by also writing it in the description, you can do that too. I personally would not bring up the idea of "fault" . Quenby

Also my items are selling like hotcakes on Poshmark but nothing selling on eBay I'm even getting sales on tradesy but nothing on mercari do you think that has to do with the different competitors prices on each site? Also I saw a video of another seller that said that for the algorithm of eBay you have to have hundreds and hundreds of listings to even make daily sales would you agree with that? Thanks for your input I am a top rated seller on Poshmark and I've been with Poshmark for 3 years and now I'm broadening my horizons by selling on different platforms so I can grow my business to where I want it to be.

@@brendamyers5995 I don't know if you have to have a certain # of items to make ebay sales. I think on ebay it's all about listing regularly. LIsting every day, even if you have to build drafts and bank them to release them everyday.

Have you ever had someone return a look-a-like item, or same item but damaged? I don’t accept returns however someone said I sent the wrong item. They had a picture of the item with the packaging (which was not my name or address) and it totally was not my item. My tracking shows it was delivered. eBay said no one was in the wrong and eBay gave her a refund.

@@TheGratefulQueen eBay said no one was at fault (tho it was clearly not my package/name/address or item) they refunded her. No harm done for me but def stood behind the buyer. Currently I do not accept returns but I do try to accommodate those that reach out to me if they are unhappy. I thank you for your returns/refund video as I am now going to strengthen my return policy. And for the record, The 3 times I have been asked for a refund/return, they ALL asked for/got a significant discount on the item. You have such a great presence and cheerful attitude, I am a new subscriber from no. Calif 😎👍🏻

Being a part time reseller, I have been doing no returns...which has worked for me so far. If I find it becomes an issue then I will go to buyer pays return shipping. I'm just trying to keep things as simple as possible. Hi Babette, def do what works best for you in your business at this time. You can always edit it if anything changes. I agree KEEP IT SIMPLE while you are learning and then when you get a return case you can navigate that and you'll know more. That is a good idea about the ebay store video. I say GET A STORE if you have hundreds of items, just start with their basic, or more if you decide you are going to list a lot more items on ebay. I’m new over a month to eBay sold 17 items so far and yesterday I had 3 returns , two for item doesn’t fit and one for item not described inseam is 4.5 in not 5.5 witch I doubt it , Maybe I’m made mistake when I was listing .... I have free returns and buyer pay for it and return my item back to me . For some reason I got scammed with one of my returns eBay already refund the money and the buyer keep item this isn’t fair I’m sad and angry . The whole work i put steaming photographing listing it’s a lot of work to me I’m new still learning hard for me ....on the end I lost my money and my time for someone that bought the item in 2weeks decades that the phyco bunny polo shirt that is hard to find is a little to tight on him 😾 and just scammed me got his money back and keep the item it just not fair . At list I should get my item back .

I am so sorry this happened. I don't quite understand why ebay would refund the person if they did not send it back. That is a mistake. When the buyer requested the return, you should have had 4 options on your menu, one of the options is "refund and buyer keeps the item" could you have checked this box by accident? That is the only way I can think of how that could happen. In every other case, the buyer has to send it back and then you have to manually go in an refund them. With more experience selling, you will have less returns-- it gets better. Yes, returns will happen and they are not always fair but I think it's worth it to be able to sell on ebay because you can make so many sales on the platform. xo Quenby

Hi Jennifer that is a great question. My return rate right now is 3% so that is 2 returns for every 860 items. I don't know the stats on how many select INAD but I would say most people select it. Even if it's for fit, most select INAD. Kinda sucks I know but it's the reality and I still think it's worth selling on there. What about for you????

I don't just sell clothes though, I sell collectibles including glass and pottery so to me, accepting returns, especially in those categories doesn't make sense. I have been debating whether to accept returns for clothing but not sure what the point is people still select INAD. Have you ever been charged the extra % on final value fees for too many returns?

@@JenniferKensey no my return rate is 3.21% which is 2 out of 860 items. That is typical of clothing sellers. For me, it is still worth accepting even tho many choose INAD case, some don't and it's worth it to save shippingon the handful of honest buyers who do choose "return for fit".
