As a private seller I was about to quit eBay because the effort involved in selling anything and the crazy fees. It was not worth it anymore. Also most business sellers sell new stuff in respect of clothing not 2nd hand and eBay did start as a 'car boot sale online'

holy cow, they are clueless, all they have to do is to bring back negative feedback for buyers, all the sudden the theft will disappear and the honesty will be rewarded. They treat us sellers so bad that we will all jump ship as soon as a new platform gets popular. I honestly can't wait the day.

I think private sellers on the whole sell used clothing and items bought but not used and this is actively helping towards the eco system. Whereas most business sellers sell new items plus constantly as its an income for them even if it's a small income based business. It's good ebay are recognising the need to evolve and it's a good start with private sellers wanted a clear out or a few items here and there. Businesses should still pay final fees etc but perhaps as good gesture could let them list their clothing items for free or a certain number each month then they will be saving money there.

business sellers save more money on fees than private sellers as they pay as low as 5% fees, but business sellers don't mention that. Also they charge much higher prices than the private sellers.

I am a private all around seller, however I struggle to sell items of clothing. I have undercut business sellers by 20%, as a trial test. When i checked comps in sold buyers still purchased from the business at a higher price. Conclusion buyers prefer buying from a business seller. Rest assured I wont be rushing back to list items of clothing as it wont sell, businesses will outperform private sellers.

@@koolandkrazy8217 no they don't (in the UK anyway). They pay full eBay fees and get no free listings (so have to pay per listing or for a shop tier). They can get 10% off fees (not 10% less fees), so if paying £15 in fees for £100 sale, they get £1.50 off, if top rated seller and the listing meets the criteria for this reduction (something like 30 day returns, 1 premium fast delivery option and some other things to meet the criteria). Private sellers get 80% off fees for 100 listings every 2 weeks and now after 2 months of unlimited 0 fees to pay, get 0 fees when selling any clothing.

As someone who switched to a business account on 1st April I feel like I have been really let down. I now pay for a shop, and am paying fees - as 10 days ago I had a 1000 free listings and now all my clothing would be free and no fees at all. Oh and guess what I can’t change the account back to a personal one. Even as a private seller I offered returns and I declare all my sales for taxes. I feel a second account coming on.

It’s all a deliberate delusion trap to get people into reselling and start a business when committed your trapped on a business account paying a lot more then you originally thought and your true profits margins are unobtainable. It’s a joke anyone starting ebay and even if do start up as a business best just staying on a private account but run as a business. May be difficult and cause problems though when and if go LTD. I’m the same as yourself but been on the business account for a year now. What ebay take from me this year compared to last is ridiculous and had very similar amount in sales.

The biggest rip off I think they perpetrate against business sellers is the lack of discounted fee weekends. When I was still a private seller I was getting them every other weekend, used to plan my list around it, been a business seller for 6 months now and not had one since. Not to mention I used to get 1000 free listings a month as a private seller, now get 250 but have to pay shop sub for the privilege. I have no problem being a business seller, and pay my taxes, or will be as last year was my first year so the money is waiting to be paid, I do have a problem being milked despite making them more money

@@Essydyk I notice that all of the greedy business sellers don't mention that they get much cheaper fees on most items. I have saw fees as low as 5% on some catorgeries where as private sellers have to pay 12.9 % on nearly everything. In my view, selling on ebay is a mugs game. I once sold on ebay but stopped after realising they have you strapped in a corner, especially if you don't have backup plan ie sell on multiple sites which only creates a bigger headache. Plus, their fees are to much. I've since move on to a locksmith business... i now have no one to abide to strick rules and potentialy, could put me out of business. End result, im completely independent, only overheads are fuel costs, topping up stock etc. Therefore, much higher profits and perhaps more importantly, I now have a life.

I am a private reseller and Ebay is aware of that, the reason we do that is because the monthly subscription just isn't worth it considering some months we barely sell anything so we would be trading at a loss at times. I dont understand the distance selling regulations argument. Ebay protect buyers regardless of being private or a business
@sparkzmusic80
@sparkzmusic80 5 ай бұрын
Don't understand? Distance selling regs and the law prohibits businesses (buying to sell for profit) masquerading as a private individual. Returns have to be accepted for any reason (including change of mind). On a private account with no returns accepted, people can only return stuff under not as described reason, but not for change of mind (against DSR). Selling for profit requires you to have full contact details including address shown to buyers before a sale is made (not possible on a private account). If registered as a private seller, you aren't allowed to put cost of stock as expenses when doing a tax return (presenting yourself as a private seller implies you are selling unwanted items you purchased at some point so only subject to possible capital gains tax). Doing deductions with cost of stock while representing yourself as a private seller may look like you are trying to lower turnover to avoid CGT.

@sparkzmusic80 that's very helpful. Thank you, it's very eye-opening to see what the differences are between a business and a private reseller. I wonder why it's allowed as many, including us, are allowed to continue our accounts as private and Ebay are aware of that.

How can I compete with a private seller who can sell at a lower price? I am just a mum trying to earn a part time wage and trying to do it the right way. Years ago our cities newspaper had tiered pricing. They charged businesses $118 for a three line ad and private individuals $29. You could contract to run an ad every week and get a discount but the business still paid $100 per week. Most ads were placed by businesses and therefore most ad revenue came from them. Dealers/business owners ended up going elsewhere to spend their ad dollar. Craigslist was started to combat this inequity and level the playing field...and the beginning of the end for the printed newspaper. Eventually Ebay dealer resellers will find a new place or way to sell other than Ebay. Not today, but someday.

Plus, are the clothes you have desired by people? If not, being a private seller is going to make minimal difference! If you are buying clothes to sell on eBay, they will be all over you and you won’t last 3 months. eBay have already stated they will be monitoring private sellers and if you list more than 10 clothing items a month, they will be checking in on you.

eBay has noticed the impact from Vinted. Private sellers selling their pre-loved clothes is big business, especially making clothing more affordable and reducing waste. eBay wants those sellers back on the platform. They need to incorporate both so when you hit that mark it automatically sends you a letter saying your now a business seller and anything you earn this year will now be taxed and automatically you should correctly not even have to deal with the taxes and eBay sort them for you benhind the scenes like what happens with say working for a company like Tesco or the railway then people wouldn’t be off put by paying taxes cause it’s easier to work out. I don’t think people would mind paying taxes if the system was easier to figure out. you should then have a box how much did you pay for your item and it will tell you what profit you will make and the tax they will take sorted! I have book keeping ready and a business advisor because I’m looking at a jewellery business,might want to do it full time but currently selling my own stuff like Lego that I built 2-3 years ago for say £30 and selling now for £70 on eBay and confused as a hoarder/collector if my own stuff is classes as reselling

This is a good thing for all, except Vinted, because if there’s nothing unique being offered by a smaller marketplace in this case vinted then it’s best to sell your goods’ fee free on where the footfall / traffic is going. A bit like corner shop Vs supermarket. Do you go to 6 different corner shops for all your shopping or do you go to the supermarket to do it all. This is What eBay is doing ie killing off the competition. Interesting times & I wouldn’t be surprised if this was referred to the Monopoly & mergers commission for unfair market place practices by a dominant business.

However, what has actually changed? There have always been private sellers getting exclusive deals and just because there are now free fees doesn't mean that the stock will be worth buying. For a "business seller" to begin saying the "private seller" always got the deals so what really has changed. Well you may convince yourself your not bothered but sadly your comment shows a completely different view. By the way you say the private seller selling there primark and f&f they can in your opinion "crack on". I think it's a little rude to suggest that's what private sellers do when you know that isn't the case. Even with more expensive brands of clothes it's just the way the cookie crumbles if they're selling out fast and your similar items not then maybe their price is a bit more affordable and acceptable as I have seen many businesses on ebay trying to sell clothing for an unrealistic listing price. I’ve bought several clothing items from Vinted, and have been very disappointed in the quality and condition of most of the items I’ve bought from private sellers who don’t take the time to assess the actual condition or take clear photos and often over-promise. A serious, honest business seller on the other hand will pay the fees (and their taxes!), accurately describe, accept returns, stick to the rules and sell with integrity because that’s the way to build their business. Yet we will now compete with ‘private’ sellers who don’t pay (and often have way more listings and take more monthly revenue, funny that…)

I agree its not fair for private sellers to have to pay 13% fees on everything else whilst greedy business sellers get fees as low as 5% plus much better deals on postage but still charge the customer the full price for postage. I am happy that greedy business has this little but of extra. Wow such cry babies.

@@koolandkrazy8217Hi - you keep leaving this comment but what do you mean that business sellers get fees as low as 5%? I’m a top rated clothing seller with a business account and I don’t get any reduction on fees, or certainly no reduction worth mentioning. I also pay around £80 per month for an eBay shop.

I hate being negitive but this feels like a kick in the stones tbh. It's almost as if eBay dont care about businesses leaving. They can simply reel in new sellers with these type of offers. It's crazy, the amount us business sellers pay in fees per year. I feel they should have restructured the shop subscriptions instead of this. Clothing business sellers will now have crazy dilema on there hands. If I was a clothing only seller I would be jumping ship ASAP. If any fees are increased to compensate for this its going to be breaking point for myself. Ebay need to innovate not compete.

Good afternoon. Just as when I decided I will use Vinted for selling from my own closet and e-bay for reselling now eBay is fee free😅 I think there will be no competition with business clothes sellers in eBay. This is because clothes sell for less than £5 in Vinted, the same item is more expensive in the charity shops. If you resell new clothes on eBay do not worry, the sea is endless I think. Vinted and eBay have plenty of room to innovate so it is user friendly for all. If reselling on eBay goes well for me, I will definitely upgrade to business on their site, just now I am still in trial and error mode. Regards

Sorry but private sellers are absolutely charged fees of 13% so it’s not that different at all to businesses! The way business listings are promoted when there’s a price reduction is way better than private. All this without the monthly fee ofcourse but I totally agree fees are far too high.

Did ebay not say at the start of the announcement that in their experience people who sell are also regular buyers. Therefore by incentivising new sellers on the platform they are bringing more buyers in general to the platform which is good for resellers across the board. It is a market share grab tactic and should improve their competitive position against Vinted and the other platforms. in general people do not tend to have 20 pairs of jeans in the cupboard as compared to business resellers' stock so at a loss as to how adding private sellers who are clearing out a few no longer used items are significant competition versus all the clothing resellers who have stores with hundreds of clothing items. Probably a bit simplistic but that's my personal opinion. Oh BTW I do not typically sell clothing

When the private sellers don't get sales or even views they will promote to get the sale. eBay will then get the promoted fee.

I think you and many commenters are confused about business accounts vs "private". It is actually business accounts (incorporated or registered partnerships as in your case) vs INDIVIDUAL sellers, which can be operating as sole proprietors (ie; as a business), with all the tax and business obligations that entail. I had to provide my SP business tax details when I opened a store.

After wasting my time over a year of selling on ebay I came to the conclusion that I am much better off spending my money on building and marketing my website. Which now means I' have far more control, sell what I want and not faced with staggering fees when I sell an item or potentially shut me down over ridiculous ebay rules. I now run a business with much less competion, which now means I have a far better work/life experience. Plus, I have more money in my pocket and working far fewer hours.

Is this not just ebay’s reaction to the government going after private sellers for unpaid tax? Makes sense for them to attract private sellers back that may have been scared off last year. Or probably just a sustainability issue and nothing to do with sales numbers.

My frustration is not that the private sellers get something to help them it's that time and time again with every announcement there is never anything offered for business sellers, fees go up but private sellers are always offered help. Private sellers do not need help getting rid of their stuff/tax avoiding, business sellers that are doing things the legitimate way always seem to be penalized, as resellers we are helping the environment more than anyone so to say that they are doing this for environmental reasons was a real kick in the teeth. We are their clients, they should be wanting to keep us but instead it feels like an employer/employee relationship, one wrong move and we are out, with the lack of competition they seem to see it as we need them more than they need us.

This will increase sales for business sellers as the private sellers use Vinted less in my opinion I hope 🤞

If you're an actual Business you should be turning over and dealing in exponentially far more volume than any private seller, if you're not then you need to step up your game or choose another career. Far too many people these days leaning into the whole 'random reseller' culture rather than being an actual thriving niche business. Most of this boils down to not wanting to put in 100% effort and expecting the world in return, which is a very British thing. I know 2 vintage clothes sellers in other countries who have within a year built their business up to warehouse levels, why haven't you? Going to a car boot once a week and some charity shops doesn't cut it. Private sellers getting free listings/fee's should not be an issue for you as a business, and is now more potential stock/bargains as well to be had in the future if those sellers are coming back to ebay. As a business where's your edge over a private seller? Step up your game. Business sellers should have a better deal on ebay, yes...and I'm sure that will come. I'm also sure these fee free listings won't be long term either, maybe in 2 years fee's will come back. Somebody wrote in the comments that private sellers will now undercut their business....right, and? that's capitalism/free markets, it's what you signed up for. Now figure a way for those buyers to buy from you and not some random, what are you offering that's better? You should all welcome competition.
