eBike ride vlog #3. Let's take a ride to curbside grocery pickup by eBike and talk about some lessons I learned from the previous pickup with a new bike trailer.
Origin 8 ergo transit handlebar | amzn.to/3eXk40z
Ergon GP1 ergo grips | amzn.to/2ZVPdx0
Mirrcycle mirror | amzn.to/30CnwbI
Bar end mirrors (better ones) | amzn.to/2EfCAob
Sunlite rack top basket | amzn.to/39obMgP
Schwalbe Marathon plus tour tires | amzn.to/2ZUyaeH
Don't get over confident with a new trailer! I got a little too excited for my first grocery pickup with the new 40 gallon tote and ordered a bit too much. The cargo filled up the tote and made it difficult to keep the lid secured. I should have brought extra cargo bungees and had my rack basket ready. The toilet paper and paper towels could have easily been strapped to the top of the tote. It helps to also bring gear ties to secure the lid down and an insulated bag to secure eggs and other perishables.

You need to get some signal lights! You are braver than I am riding on the highway without signal lighting.

Yeah for sure I've been experimenting with some light options... just posted a video of the winglights a few weeks ago. They're pretty cool but not the brightest for full daylight. I don't ride on the highways though.

I take my tubs and put them in my cart to fill them up as I shop as the groceries are scanned, I just put them back in, and no plastic grocery bags thanks.

15:30 wrong it’s left hand/arm straight for left turn hand down for slow/stop and hand up for right hand turn (trust me I live in Arizona and my vehicle doesn’t have turn signals or brake lights but hand signals are acceptable during daylight hours

I probably did in the parking lot. It's a pretty narrow trailer though - about 22" tire to tire so it actually tracks pretty nicely.

should'nt you use the slow lane whenever there is no bike lane?
@eBikeaholic
@eBikeaholic 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's a great point but in this case the traffic pattern sort of requires me to keep that lane otherwise it gets nearly impossible to merge back over to the turning lane after the underpass. Not bike friendly at all.

yeah I've made all my trailers diy. This one is from a bodychamp inversion table. I'm testing one now that's made from 8020 t slot rails and has magnet mounts... will be sharing a vid on that soon. Do you use bike trailers?

Hi, do suspension important for ebike.
@eBikeaholic
@eBikeaholic 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on usage. For offroad use yes. I mostly ride pavement and gravel and don't use any suspension. Wider tires with lower pressure (60-70 psi) and a suspension saddle or seatpost are fine for me.

I've done grocery runs in Austin on my hot-rodded Radrover. It's really fun to load up my basket and side bags with stuff. I've been thinking about getting a trailer like yours, however, because it would be nice to have more cargo space.

@@eBikeaholic I was skeptical at first since the controller didn't really have a lot of performance, but after a controller swap, new motor, parallel batteries, there's more than enough horsepower for a trailer I think :)

You sure do ride some crazy roads. They really need to make them more bike friendly. I used to drive that road everyday in my truck and that was bad enough for me let alone on a ebike.
@eBikeaholic
@eBikeaholic 4 жыл бұрын
yeah for sure... the closer you get to I-35 the more aggressive it gets - I suppose just the idea of that highway brings the crazy out of us. It's just like learning to ride a bicycle though, the first few rides are nerve racking but then you get used to it. A solid mirror and lots of flashing lights help give some peace of mind.

Awesome trailer, and a great video. I like the way you comment the whole experience. But wow, needing to drive in middle lanes - not for the faint of heart.

Thanks. Yeah that strip near the highway can be rough. I try to go during offpeak traffic but there were a lot of construction trucks for some reason. Sometimes we'll use a different store that's a bit farther and has a nicer route, but my wife prefers the produce at this store.

Damn dude, there were bike paths in one form or another almost the whole way to the H.E.B. and back?! Other than using the bike lanes where they were clearly marked , it seems you took a LOT of chances being on main stretches of road like that instead of riding 15 feet to the right...just saying.
@eBikeaholic
@eBikeaholic 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah this route is mostly pleasant except that short strip to cross the highway. What do you mean by taking chances? Bicycles have the right to take a lane when needed. On this route I use the middle lane for that short section because it becomes dangerous trying to change lanes to make a left. I've tried the sidewalks but they're not designed for bikes and are very cumbersome. The first few rides are a little uncomfortable but once you get used to it maintaining a similar speed to the traffic is the safest option.

Take the car. Not worth the risk.
@eBikeaholic
@eBikeaholic 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your opinion! I often need to be reminded that everyone sets different values for 'worth' and 'risk'. For me the definite risks of the automobile far outweigh the potential risks of the bicycle. By operating an automobile we're much more likely to end someone's life and for every mile we drive an ICE we contribute 1 lb of CO2 air pollution into the atmosphere. As for my personal worth I place a higher value on maintaining a habitable global atmosphere for my potential grandchildren and future generations of the human race. According to TxDOT "An average of 10 people die every day in car crashes in the state." Lookup #endthestreak With proper training, gear, awareness and caution a nimble cyclist can easily avoid most collisions with larger vehicles. With thoughtfully designed infrastructure, the risk will be reduced even further for people of all ages and abilities. The good news is that the City of Austin / TxDOT is now fully aware of the multiple dilemmas caused by our abuse of the automobile and is prioritizing infrastructure for better forms of mobility. They're planning to convert the I-35 interchange shown this video into a DDI with bike / ped friendly shared-use paths (along with making significant bike infrastructure improvements along I-35 and throughout the city).
