Have you read The Book of Doors? It came out around the same time as City of Stardust but got buried by City of Stardust’s hype, but it’s SO good. Reminded me of the experience of reading Ink Blood Sister Scribe.

With Goddess of the River, the second half is the more reimagined part of the novel. Ganga isn't around during the wars in the second half, so it makes sense that it may feel different.

I also agree with the two books idea. It would have been fun to have a longer first half of the book actually.

When you say that 3.77 is on the lower end, why do you feel that? I mean, I don't usually look at rating from platforms like good reads, but as I understand 3 stars is a good book, 4 is real good and 5 would be like an all time favourite. To me a 3.77 looks like a very good rating... it i s almost 4 stars
@Srbthmlnsmth
@Srbthmlnsmth 13 күн бұрын
Yeah but compared to trashy books that have ridiculously high ratings (4.5+) I can see why she says it. The thing is Goodreads isn’t for quality but popularity
@ebnovels

From what I’ve noticed (which is of course more anecdotal) adult fantasy works tend to be higher as a genre than a lot of others, and things below 3.80 can turn people away. Not always, but speaking very generally. And in reference to the other reply, there are a lot of books, especially within certain subgenres of fantasy, that skew incredibly high (Fourth Wing, ACOTAR, From Blood and Ash) so I wouldn’t want someone to see those books with over 4.0 ratings and think that 3.77 isn’t worth giving a try.

I got to read an ARC for Fireborne Blade and I thought it was a really fun and unique take on a lot of the classic dragon fantasy tropes. The only thing that brought my rating down to a 4 was that I did think it was a bit too short although I rarely read books under 600 pages so it might be a me problem 😅

I think it's a good thing to point out that people can be tired of European and American retellings, but it is a symptom of racism in colonialism to "be done with retellings" by the time other cultures get invited to the table and are able to start getting their stories published. Love the spotlight on Goddess of the River and I can't wait to give it a read!

Just curious (not trying to make you defend your point, just genuinely wondering!) what makes something a ripoff of history vs alternate history/that time in history is the inspiration and setting?

@@ebnovels for me the amount of creativity the artist takes or effort to include their own twists and change things. But also maybe some Indian readers think this about Patel’s works idk. In general I don’t like retellings of anything tho. My hot take is theyre basically fanfiction that got published
