Suddenly, all of Jane’s questions were answered. The years of suffering, the nights were she went to sleep wondering why she simply didn’t understand the things others took for granted - fearing she’d never be able to function in society - were over. It all started when Jane was a little girl. Her mother loved flowers, and tended to a magnificent garden which she loved to brag about, and would take Jane for a tour every time there was a new arrival. But Jane never could quite figure out what made the flowers so different from each other… they all looked the same. Her mother was particularly fond of the poinsettias and practically sang praises to their striking deep red color, brought out even stronger by the bright green of the leaves below… but Jane never noticed. She would always nod her head quietly to avoid breaking her mother’s heart, but she only saw a clump of leaves, every time. It got worse as she grew. When she made her own food, she would usually use the wrong spices. When she drove, she’d mix up signs. In school, her art teacher always told her that whatever she drew was all wrong, no matter how hard she tried. It was like everyone else was seeing _something_ that was simply out of reach to her; she started thinking she was crazy. Even into her old age, the lingering doubt that she was completely sane was always there. In her old age, she came to depend on a cane to stand and walk. She, almost affectionately, referred to it as her “green cane”. There were many canes in the world, but hers was green - the same color as the leaves in her mother’s garden from some many years ago - and it was the only one helping _her_ hang on in a world turned against her. She didn’t even trust her own family; she always felt their doubting looks, the almost piteous tone in their voices, when they met. As she resigned herself to keep a low profile in the old folks’ home, her green cane became her only friend. One day, however, she thought she lost it - her most trusted ally - when she found it missing from its usual spot next to her rocking chair. She immediately assembled a search party, of building staff and fellow octogenarians, betraying by a cruel and unforgiving world. Finally, Mary Anne, her next door neighbor, found it in the other room - a simple mistake on Jane’s part. Jane was relieved beyond words to be reunited with her green cane, but Mary Anne’s seemingly innocent off-handed comment hit her like a truck: “…but it is red.” Jane was colorblind.

“Jane misplaced her green cane.” a man said. “Where did you put your green cane, Jane?” Asked her father, Rétuzziaro. “I don’t know *jane* ” said Jane. “I found your cane, Jane” said her friend, Mary Anne. … But it is… Red. At this very moment of her life, Jane realized she had been betrayed. Her one and only friend, Jane, had betrayed her. She was the one person Jane trusted. And now she could never trust Mary Anne, Rétuziaro, or Anyone ever again.
