@@wikeni9096 You're not the only one who sometimes has nightmares about it. I'm revisiting Ecco videos today because I thought about it today in fact. As a kid I played this alot. Beat it with invincibility cheat code at first because it was too difficult doing it without it. Once I understood where to go and what to do in every level after beating it with the cheat, it didn't feel right to me until I beat it normally. It took awhile but eventually I learned to beat the game normally, with no cheats or exploits. I put it down for good eventually until the sequels came out and I cant remember if I beat those, but I do remember playing them alot. It's odd that I remember the first one so well though. Anyway, as a kid I always liked going in the ocean to get wet, but overtime as an adult I've developed a phobia to go in too deep into the ocean and I think Ecco is a huge part why I have that phobia. I used to swim out pretty far out into the ocean. Once I swam beyond where the waves even form and that's when a strong current almost took me. I had to swim out of it as hard as I can. I had to quite literally swim for my life. That was such a frightening experience that I never attempted such a thing again and now I only stay close to the shore during the rare occasions I decide to go in. I wont go deeper than my waist level which also begins to give me the chills. Now as an adult, every few years I will eventually think of the first Ecco game, and I'll sometimes even have a bit of a nightmare about it. Now when I think of the ocean, I can only think of all the dark scary thinks in its depths. Strangely I love visiting aquariums to look at sea life without consequence, and yet I think of Ecco at the same time every time I visit an aquarium. To think this game can have such a mental impact on you is crazy. Believe me, you're not the only one.

Not sure what it is about the time travel sequence at 6:00 that gives me chills whenever I watch runs of this game. Also, the programmers seemed to have taken into account the average underwater breath of a dolphin when considering how long the tube + machine + end boss takes to complete (around 8 min). Any longer and Ecco's pod would have drowned, unfortunately.

@@jordanvespa720 The TAS doesn't use the "horizontal camera glitch" (not sure about the name) that skips every stage with a "normal" exit, leaving only stages with a "special event" like, time travel, a boss fight or the autoscrollers. Basically the only "challenge" remaining is not dying on the machine (no optimization here, but its isn't easy even for a speedrunner) and of course the final boss. Impressive stuff. By the way, Ecco records the play time in passwords (not counting time spent in message screens, loading, etc.). OOPYYHJD = 60672 frames (with a possible error of 63 frames), i.e. 16 minutes and 51 seconds, assuming NTSC.

God you just broke my childhood over your knee, beating the game as fast as you did. @DuskFiend10 жыл бұрын
it's a movement glitch that allows ecco to dash while tricking the camera into remaining stationary. the original TAS actually uses it in the lagoon IIRC, but it uses it vertically through an air tunnel. it just requires an odd rhythm on the d-pad, in most applications it's pretty easy. it gets really touchy in some though (the vents, origin beach)

@LazyWorkCreations9 жыл бұрын
it's just a flat out terrible stage the designers liked so much. I agree if only that stage is shorter or better yet didn't exist in a form of an auto scroller.
@VideoGameAnimationStudy9 жыл бұрын
LazyWorkCreations There's something menacing about the stage which I think would be lost if the auto-scroll was absent. Usually I'd agree as auto-scroll kinda sucks in any game, but it's put to fairly good use here. Just needs to be at least 75% shorter.
@LazyWorkCreations9 жыл бұрын
Dan Root I think they could have done better like in tides of time which did this auto scrolling again but at least it was way shorter. As for menacing I have a hard time seeing it, it just looks like a stage from super r-type except with a dolphin.
@VideoGameAnimationStudy9 жыл бұрын
LazyWorkCreations Ha, yeah I suppose it does. I think, of me, it's the rumbling the stage has when it's scrolling, too. Just adds a menace, for me. But yeah, I agree, Tides of Time did it exactly right. It wasn't overly complex and it was much shorter.
