Satella's Wish | Re:Zero Season 2 Episode 13 Review/Analysis

Natsuki Subaru learns Satella's true goal. Here's my review of Re:Zero Season 2 Episode 13, AKA Re:Zero Episode 38.

After Subaru rejected Echidna's offer to form a contract with him in the previous episode, the tea party continues! Guests include:
Echidna, Witch of Greed
Carmilla, Witch of Lust

Minerva, Witch of Wrath
Daphne, Witch of Gluttony
Sekhmet, Witch of Sloth
Subaru, "Sage Candidate"
Satella, the Witch of Envy, wasn't invited, but she shows up anyway.
When Satella appears, she torments Subaru with her love, leading him to bite off his tongue. But after the witches save him, Subaru's finally ready to talk with Satella. She asks him to kill her, and he promises to save her. Her face is revealed, and she looks exactly the same as Emilia. Does this mean Satella and Emilia are the same person? I doubt it. Is Satella Emilia's mother? Probably not. But are Satella and Emilia connected in some way? Absolutely.
After the tea party, Subaru loses the qualifications to enter the tomb after rejecting Echidna's contract proposal. Roswaal reveals that he's the one who hired Elsa to attack the mansion, and Subaru freaks out after learning how evil Roswaal truly is. He runs into Otto, who once again proves himself to be a great friend. And now we have to wait 3 months.

Unpopular theory: The director intentionally cut out some foreshadowing scenes and we have to wait for the other half of the season. So that they *think* we can't guess the plot On summary, the actual villain is the director

I mean why would they foreshadow a bunch of stuff, only for a bunch of people to forget about it in the 3 month break and for them to have to re-introduce those elements later? Some of the cuts were pretty bad, but since most of them are only going to be relevant in the second half of the season and in arc 5(wilhelm's shoulder, some cut regulus dialogue,etc) and 6 (daphne's sage lines and the witches talking after subaru leaves the most recent tea part)

(Potential) SPOILER: There's already going to be a big fucking cut in the next cour because they already did a movie that should have happened in cour 2 and to me that doesn't seem right. The foreshadowing in the WN and LN don't give away much until you read it happen, then it hits you what the words prior make sense. If they want to cut content, fine, but don't cut the important bits or god forbid reintroduce them into a movie that most of the viewers probably haven't watched.

I thought that Subaru's first trial was a masterful foreshadowing for the two controlling figures he would face this season: Subaru's dad: You don't have to try to be me. Roswaal: You have to become like me. Subaru's mom: Do things your own way. Echidna: Do things my way (forge a contract with me and I will guide you to the optimal path). In a very real sense, Roswaal and Echidna are dark reflections of Subaru's parents, and I applaud Tappei for weaving this contrast so effortlessly and seamlessly into the story, especially as Subaru is forced to choose between the paths they offer him and his own motivations and desires. Ironically, it was Echidna's Trials (both the first and the second) which gave Subaru the strength to resist both her contract and Roswaal's manipulations, and it is probably not the first time that Echidna has set in motion her downfall with her own actions.

The talk with Satella and Subaru reminded me of when Subaru argued with Emilia in Season 1 Episode 13 "Self-Proclaimed Knight Natsuki Subaru." He yelled about how much she meant to him and his suffering, but she could not understand. Emilia most famously stating, "The version of me that lives within you must be amazing." I see the same parallel between Satella and Subaru. This doing everything for someone who is so special but doesn't even know. It's much like falling in love with a crush, but they don't have an idea of the depth of your emotion and devotion, and the version of them that you have in your mind is different than reality. Even further, it reminds me of when people guilt-trip others with "sacrifice" (you don't know what I've done for you) and expect gratitude and worship for a favor that was never asked. You would think that Subaru could at least understand Satella considering how he is in the same position himself, but that's just the general fault with humanity.

I love character pararels so much it's one of the best literarure tropes. Roswall is also like a dark reflection of Subaru, he is what would happen of him if Subaru took Dona's hand. There is also a pararel between Rem and Subaru- both are selfless and both don't hesitate to sacrificed themselves for the love of their life. There are also many similarities between Lia and Satella, Beako and Ryuzu... Tappei is a damn good writer

I think in the first episode of Re zero when Emilia said she was "Satella." She wasn't lying. This was literally the first time he met her. And she is so surprised that Subaru cares about her and treats her nice. Then when they both died and Subaru reached out to her, Satella also gripped his hand back. This was in the ending song of Re zero too. She gave him the power to Return by Death right then and there. But at a cost when Satella gave him that power she has no control in Emilia's body and is with Subaru inside him.

It makes sense that Satella wants to die if she's being possessed by the Witch of Envy. She probably knows of the horrible things the Witch did while controlling her body, and wants to be free of her. Saving Satella would mean somehow separating the Witch from Satella, and that's probably going to be really difficult. Also, Minerva is best girl. Satella is fine too I guess.

soo uhh here's some theory from an anime only as you said in the video Satella/Witch of Envy can affect time itself via rewinding and pausing it, and your thought of her Being able to see Future events ringed a bell in me. Roswaal's Gospel is basically a book that predicts Future events right? and in the Anime we haven't seen an Apostle of Envy yet, so here i'am thinking that Roswaal may be THE Apostle of Envy (hence knowing some of the Witches such as Echidna). He may have a Pact with the Witch of Greed wich is giving him the Possibility of the Future Predicting Gospel. How could Roswaal have made Contact to The Witch of Envy? In the Re:Zero Lore, 400 Years ago The Witch of Envy was the Cause for "the great calamity" and Roswaal Stated that 400 YEARS ago he got enchanted by "Those Eyes" and then went Insane (Insane as a synonom that he is the Apostle of envy?). One more thing I want to Mention, as we got to know this Episode Roswaal hired Elsa to Attack the Mansion in order to build up Subaru to Perfection. If we Jump Back to Season 1 of Re:zero In the First arc With Rom, felt and Elsa, They were trading about the Gem thing from Emilia that makes her a Candidate for the Royal Election, it is then that Felt mentioned she Got Hired by Another Woman, That woman was Elsa and Elsa Stated the She got Hired by another GUY. Since we got to know in Season 2 Roswaal does Know Elsa and is Capable of Hiring Her! So lets just Say Roswaal Hired Elsa back in Season 1 Aswell, then why did he do it? Because of his Future Predicting Ability he Probably noticed that in the near future someone (Subaru) would appear and already constructed a plan so that he (Roswaal) got a chance of meeting Subaru (the plan with elsa, we still dont even know WHY emilia was in that town, she almost never is there is she? everyone hates her because of the Similarities with the witch) so Roswaal Told emilia to be in that town at the exact moment and also gave Elsa the Information about emilia's location wich Elsa gave to Felt. I've seen the theory that when Subaru was taken to the new world, he has a tea part with Satella that he forgot, where she gave him Return by Death. I've always thought this made a lot of sense, and explains why his obsession with Emelia is the one constant throughout all of the IF stories, even the Pride IF, where he hardly ever sees her. In reality, Subaru loves Emelia because she reminds him of Satella, not the other way around as he thinks (this would also explain why she didn't seem upset at all when he said he loved Emelia and not her, she would just dismiss that as him being confused about his lover for her). If this is the case, I think what you said implies that this tea party went on far longer than any of us thought. Weeks? Months? Years? If Subaru truly spent years with the Witch of Envy, and made an impact like what she says here (giving her perspective in the same way he gave it to Rem), it's no wonder she treats him the way she does. I'm just wondering... What if Re Zero ends with Satella giving him his memories back? He remembers years happily spent with her, and realizes that his feelings for her were just misunderstood as his feelings for Emelia.

I Don't think that's the case, Subaru remembers everything that happens in the realm of the witch party whenever he enters it. Even if he forgets everything outside of it (Previously) he would have all the memory once hes invited again... On top of that it was a "pact" with echidna, not the way the realm itself works, if echidna didn't made that pact in the first place subaru would have been aware of the time spent in that realm.. Ofc you could say that "Satella" had her own pact with subaru in such scenario, but still i don't think that's the case, because it would need to make sense to make such pact AND THEN be released to the world.. it would need to make sense for both Satella and Subaru to have such pact.

This is my theory: In episode 0, when Subaru is first isekaid, he meets a girl which calls herself Satella. She grows fond of him and starts liking him. He dies for her. She gives him "return by death" in order to save him. But... Return by death does not take him back in time, it actually takes him to alternative universe and Satella goes mad because she lost him. It takes him to a universe where the same things from episode 0 and 1 happen, but much later in time. This time he meets a girl, recognises her as Satella, but when he says her name out loud, people around are shocked. She also gets mad, telling him not to call her by that witches name. He thinks she gave him fake name the first time they met, and story goes on. even tho she is actually not the same person he met the first time. The first time, he met an actual Satella. So who is this Emilia girl? When Subaru got killed and was granted return by death by Satella, timeline in that universe does not stop. In fact it continues normally. Echidna stumbles upon Subaru's body, knowing that he was granted return by death. She invites him to her realm, wanting to find out more. Minerva heals him and Echidna offers him to make a pact with her. She would grant him knowledge and everything he needs in order to get Satella back, while he would use return by death as much as Echidna wants. Same thing like in last couple of episodes, but in this point of time, Subaru is inexperienced and nothing yet happened. Subaru gets a gospel from Echidna. But you still have not explained who is Emilia... The story continues, subaru uses return by death countless times by Echidna's will. It completely changes him as a person. It in fact changes him so much, he grows up to be Roswall. In the meantime, Satella roams, being a huge threat to everyone and ends up being sealed away at the tower. You know Echidna is able to make her clones/vessels in form of Ryuzu? We know that the experiment failed and vessels gained their own consciousness. Subaru/Roswall uses a similar method to reincarnate himself in his descendants bodies for centuries. Subaru/Roswall asks Echidna to make a clone/vessel for Satella wanting to use it as a host for Satela's soul which he plans to save from a tower. However, that experiment fails too, clone develops its own consciousness and Emilia is born. Empty vessel/clone, created in Satella's image, which developed its own self. Roswall takes her in, still unable to save Satella. This is when things get interesting. Subaru/Roswall finds out from his gospel that regular Subaru is about to be reincarnated for the first time in hundreds of years, which to regular Subaru seems like a blink of an eye. We know witches have insight in all alternative realities and know about return by death. Subaru/Roswall transfers himself to that alternate reality and arranges for everything so he meets regular Subaru. He needed to make sure regular Subaru meets Emilia first. He arranges for all the events that happened up until now to make regular Subaru stronger so he can save Emilia, while Subaru/Roswall tries to save Satella... Subaru/Roswall has been led by greed this entire time.

That is nice theory but it can not be on many levels. It was Emilia who gave the Satella name for sure since even Puck was surprised. The meaning is everyone sees her as Satella anyways even if she told them she is Emilia and she is sick of it. It just showed that Emilia was sick of it already and kinda(not entirely) gave up on saying she is not Satella. Spoilerish Warning: First of all Satella is witch of envy by choice and she is actually not compatible with her sin. Unlike other witches, she doesn't embrace it nor it reflects to her heart. She took sin factors to be powerful. Even before Satella's attack, witches and the world were in trouble. So what she did(apart from destroying half of the world and devauring witches) is unknown to me but she made an impact and is even hated today but witches don't seem to hate her. Her powers often go out of control especially when Subaru forces it to, but it is not controlled by Satella. So she for some reason took all the power and suffering on herself and now waiting to die.

I don't buy the Subaru = Roswaal theory. Spoiler... I'm not sure if you read the novels, but... 1. In a flashback, Roswaal got one-sidedly annihilated by Hector. If he's Subaru, he would have made sure to use RBD during the battle with Hector, especially when his "friends" were in trouble at that time. 2. If he's inlove with Satella, it doesn't make sense why he had not shown a single care about her, but will simp anytime for Echidona, even planning to kill the dragon just to revive her. 3. In the flashback, he was still a young man at around the same age of Subaru, yet he is already a great magician. I don't believe Subaru would just get that good with magic within months. 4. It's implied he had a childhood during his time with Echidona. He appears to be from a well-off family as well. 5. He loves Echidona, not Satella.

This episode was great! For overseas Re: zero fans, I have a supplement about Satella's lines from me as a Japanese. First, although cut in the anime, she has two personalities, the light personality is Satella and the dark personality is the Witch of envy. Her famous lines include "I love you." (Aisiteru) and "Love me" (Aisite). The first line just means "I love you". However, the second line, "Aisite," can be interpreted in two ways. This word can be interpreted into two meanings because Japanese is a language that can read various meanings even if the subject and object are omitted from the sentence and only the verb is used. Even if "Watasi wo" (me) is deleted from "Watasi wo Aisite" (Love me), it becomes "Aisite" (Love me). Even if you delete "Anata wo" (yourself) from "Anata wo Aisite" (Love yourself), it will become "Aisite" (Love yourself). Each "dodged the bullet" moment when Subaru made a Noble choice rather than the Sin choice which branch off into the "Sin If" stories, moves him one step closer to being chosen as the Paragon of Virtue l, the Sage.
