Great hack video! Thanks Mr. Gary! I have successfully adjusted a Micro-D type mixture screw with a roll pin on a Yamabiko EGC2500c (Japanese version of the Echo PB-250) equipped with a Walbro WTA-33 carburetor! Since Japan, where I live, is a country that uses the metric system, it is difficult to obtain 1/8 inch roll pins. Therefore, I used a 2.5mm (M2.5) size roll pin. In order to fit the roll pin to the screw head of Micro-D, it was necessary to deform the tip into an elliptical shape using a vise. I also bought a 3mm (M3) size, which is the same size as the 1/8 inch roll pin, but it was too big for the mounting holes and couldn't rotate well. The important point is to insert the roll pin into the wooden handle like Mr. Gary, or grab the roll pin with the locking vise pliers and turn it while applying a strong pushing force to the mixture screw. The mixing screw is fixed with Loctite by the manufacturer. However, if you push the roll pin strongly and keep turning it in the loosening direction, you can remove it without any problem. I do not recommend turning it in the tightening direction. If you turn it with a roll pin, the screw head of Micro-D will gradually deform. If I use a roll pin, remove the mixing screw completely once. It would then be recommended to use a metal saw or air router to create a groove in which a flat-blade screwdriver fits into the Micro-D's screw head. Removing the mixing screw will release Loctite from the bond. Therefore, it can be tightened with a very weak torque, so by modifying the Micro-D screw head so that it can be used with a flat-blade screwdriver before it is deformed so much, subsequent adjustments will be very easy. If the Micro-D head is significantly deformed, use a file to flatten the damaged area before digging the groove. Since the thread of the mixed screw is about 1 cm, there is no problem in changing to a flat-blade screwdriver even if the screw head is deformed. When digging a groove, wrap an old cloth around the middle stem and fix it with a vise, being careful not to damage the tip or thread. If the modification fails, repurchase a high speed (P003-003870) and low speed (P003-003920) mixture screw from an Echo dealer. If you succeed in removing the mixture screw, you will be sure of your victory. I wish you all the best.

I tried this and it worked. Used a 1/8" roll pin, which I ground down to 3/32 to fit into the holes on the carb. had to tap the pin a little bit to close it down to grab the needles. I have to tap it down over the needles with a small hammer, but it will turn the needles and allow adjustment. Drilled a 1/8 hole into a short dowel same as the video. Great tip to get around EPA requirements and idiots in CA.This is a sophisticated carb, with air being injected into both sides of the cylinder through reed valves. The plastic air opening on the carb needs to be kept lubed or it will hang up and make throttle hard to open and close. The main air intake also uses a set of reed valves to feed the air/oil mixture into the crankcase.

I just hammered on the hard nylon insulation from a 16G wire connector. Left the connector intact and used it to turn needle. Worked awesome. Thanks for nurturing the idea.

Thanks Gary! Piggybacking on your idea, what worked for me on my non-adjustable Echo PB 500T backpack Walbro carb was the ink "straw" from a BIC pen. I made a small slice in the end with a razor to allow the straw to open and fit over the needles. I then pushed hard onto the needle and, while continuing to apply pressure, turned. I couldn't really "feel" whether or not the straw was on the needle, but lo and behold it worked! 5 minutes of adjusting the high, low and idle and we're back in business. Thank you sir.

Similar to Demon, but instead, my tool was a fabricated unused wire terminal (have a kit with assorted sizes, so I didn't even have to leave my garage). Flared the crimp end a nominal amount and voila!, I had my tool. Made the adjustment and my PB-500T is back in business - no more bogging down at WOT:)

Gary,Works Great!!! You are a Genius! I have a small engine shop and am not an Echo dealer so I can't buy the Echo tool for the PB500. Wasted a lot of time trying to make a tool. I can't thank you enough!

After reading, and reading I finally discovered a replacement adjustment needle for these carbs. When you read thdescription, it will state high side only. Just buy two, remove the small 'D' screws and re-insert these. They have slots cut for a jeweler's size screwdriver. It makes these carbs a cinch to adjust. I made your tool Gary, and it gave me the opportunity to adjust mine when it wouldn't run for squat. Now, that a truly adjustable screw is available, you have a great tool to remove the old small D, and if you don't want to spend the money for the new screw, you have a great tool to use anyway. Thanks. I guess it's us against the EPA. It's great to try and save the environment, but not at the cost of making my purchase worthless after a year of use.

Thanks ill try it, every time I do fuel mixtures on a small machines the manufacturers try to make it harder forgetting that mechanics are determined to get around problems. They need to give up and just let us get the dam job done !!!

Thanks for the info. I see some that there’s like wax or some sort of plastic covering the screws also. I usually heat up a little screwdriver and melt them out. But I’m gonna try your trick. My Echo has a slight bog and it needs that little tweak. Thanks bro.

Much respect to Gary! Great idea for a fix. HOWEVER, a 1/8 roll pin DOES NOT work to adjust an Echo PB580T. Don’t even waste your time. Maybe Gary has a super skinny 1/8 roll pin, but it will not fit into the opening where the L needle is located, much less provide appropriate grip. I am wondering if Gary meant to say to flare the end of the roll pin to 1/8? If you are going to do this get a 1/8 and 3/32 roll pin and see which works best! You can locate 3/32 roll pins at Harbor Freight in an assortment kit. They are very hard to find in my area. They can also be found at gun shops. Good luck and thanks again for the idea.

After a lot of reading, I ran across a fella that replaced his small 'D' H and L screws with Echo P003001130 slotted screws. When you order, the info will say this is the H screw, but they are identical, so order two. I ordered a pair and they work like a charm. All you need is a jeweler's screwdriver. Actually, I drilled out the access hole just short of the beginning of the threads so I can use a little bigger screwdriver. Also, as you are facing the screws, the H is on the left and R is on the right. Took me a while to find that out. I just wanted to pass this on for whomever might want to do this.

William Pippin are these needles interchangeable with other Echo modes like a PB-250 handheld blower?

That, I am not real sure of. I had to do a lot research to find out that it would work on mine. Find out which carb you have and go from there. Sorry I can't give you more detailed information.

first, how old is the machine, was carb removed, and have you moved those tuning screws. if you have removed the carb, those 2 rubber boots HAVE to be put back on, and seated properly or it wont start at all, I believe vacuum has alot to do with fuel delivery on this carb. check if the fuel lines are in the right places, there are 2, the black which is the supply goes onto the straight barbed fitting, the clear would land on the 90degree fitting...last I would look into the rubber plug which houses the fuel lines in the tank. they tend to leak.

I have 2 questions. First, on the pb500 carb, which screw is the low speed and which is the high speed? Then, which way do you turn the screws to richen the mixture? Thanks
@GARYBRONNE6 жыл бұрын
Rob Wagner hey Rob I'm currently away from my bench right now, but from memory, with the primer bulb facing down, the screw on the left is the high speed adjustment, loosen or unscrew to richen. Squeeze the throttle fully the adjust screw for max rpm. Very little turns....VERY little turns!

I think the only kit that you buy (if you can find it on ebay) is the Walbro 500-500 kit that can fit into those holes.

The 3/16 worked better for me flared than the 1/8" roll pin. The 1/8 was too large for the aluminum orifice on the carb. I tried to link you to the web page on hyperparts but it would not work. 91100 ST is the part number. You can see it on AMAZON but they are out of stock. wolf

Hi Gary, how are you Man? I'm having a problem with my blower echo, some time after you start working with it, the enfine loose the performance as the gasoline stop to come in the carburetor... you just release the throttle button the engine returns to the low idle, some seconds after releasing the throttle you can pull the throttle again and the revs go up normally, one or two minutes after the same problem again, the revs decreases fast as the gas ran out... if you release the throtle again the engine stay on in low idle... being honest I'm used to handle with cars, no small engines like these... I'd like to know if you already had some experience like I wrote above... I have already disassembled the carburetor, cleaned it and assembly again... and nothing changes, I've checked the spark plug and it seeems to be ok... thank you Man!!

i have the 580 model, and those bastards put the set screws in super tiny holes, no clearance for any roll pin. i spent way too much time filing and dressing it down, didn't come close to working. i would love to drill those damn holes out some but the needles have to come out first.
@mpbham17 жыл бұрын
I've purchased tools on eBay that have the D, seven spine, and even 21 spine, but they are too large for those holes, like you said they made them truly tamper-resistant. If you'd like I could trade those tools if you would modify a roll pin for me

My 500t bogs on acceleration what is it it's not the spark arrestor
@GARYBRONNE5 жыл бұрын
uawsux, you need to tweak your low speed adjustment screw, try turning it out a hair to give it more fuel until it revs up correctly, if it gets worse obviously go the other way, then adjust high speed with throttle wide open till you get the most rpm without it dying off...
@uawsux2 жыл бұрын
