Lips Like Sugar and U2's New Year's Day make me think about driving around San Francisco in my Volkswagen Rabbit with an ugly tape deck hanging dangerously close to the gear shift. I wish I listened to this song more then. I've heard it much more in recent decades. The Killing Moon is one of those songs that feels more 80's than just about any other song.

The Psychedelic Furs is good recommendation, though I like the songs President Gas and Sister Europe better. Two other great bands from the era are The Monochrome Set (check out Jet Set Junta and Eine Symphonie des Grauens) and The Chameleons (known in the States as The Chameleons UK), which I think is the most underrated band of the era.

My take is that those first four albums are the best of the band; Ocean Rain may well include their two most typical, yet accessible songs: Silver and Killing Moon and perhaps, Seven Seas. Whatever, I love them all.

I'm with Brad on this one. They definitely create a intense, suspenseful atmosphere. This track is a post-punk masterpiece IMO, and is pretty much held up as one of the best tracks in the genre. "Fate, up against your will," is such a great line. Interesting factoid: the chord progression is based on Bowie's Space Oddity played backwards. The song has been featured in movies and TV shows and has been covered by many bands; most recently Chvrches

Watch the movie Donnie Darko (absolute cult classic) & this song played at the begging of that movie gives it this melancholy but epic feel. It’s a great song period but it’s used so effectively in that movie (the whole soundtrack is used to incredible effect) that it takes it to a new lvl. Ads an emotional resonance. I love the 80’s goth era music. I wish it had lasted longer bc I feel like I’ve listened to most of the music from that era and I just want more. This song, Siouxie & the Banshees, The Church, The Smiths, they all elicit a vibe that’s hard to find in other music. I hate when I find music that I love that isn’t being made anymore.

@@bryanparenteau374 I absolutely detest the director's cut. It changes too many of the songs (including "Killing Moon"). The only song they didn't replace but SHOULD have replaced was "Notorious" by Duran Duran, which was originally supposed to be "West End Girls" by the Pet Shop Boys.

I didn’t watch the director’s cut bc I heard they changed the music & the og music is a huge part of the movie for me. It just works so well (tho I think west end grls would have been better then notorious during the dance scene, but I also don’t like notorious). I’ve been thinking about showing my kid Donnie Darko now that’s she old enough & I think she’ll love it. Although who knows. She’s more into animated shows then live action. When I 1st saw donnie Darko it was right after I’d 1st started dating her dad & we were baby sitting my big sisters baby. I’d put my niece to bed & we’d smoked a blunt outside & then watched it. (I was a terrible babysitter obvi.) But the movie totally mind fcked me. Yrs later I’d just randomly think of the movie & realize something I hadn’t thought of before. I was going to have my kid’s dad watch it but he doesn’t visit often & his visits are dominated by elden ring right now. So I think ill watch it with her.
@mournblade1066
@mournblade1066 2 жыл бұрын
@@Comrade_mommy To be honest, the director's cut uses the music the way the director originally intended it to be use. . . EXCEPT for "Notorious." It was originally supposed to be "West End Girls," but that was the ONLY one that wasn't change. Besides the music, the director's cut "dumbed down" the film, in my opinion. Donnie Darko is a textbook example of WHY an editor is so crucial to films, and why a "director's cut" is not necessarily a "better" cut. My point being this: Stick to the original theatrical cut. (But replace "Notorious" with "West End Girls." There's a video here on KZbin--or at least there used to be--showing that scene with "West End Girls," and it's so much better because of it.)

Such a masterpiece of a song. The music and lyrics go together so perfectly and superbly catch this sort of dark, compulsive romanticism. It evokes images of werewolves, vampires, or even the devil himself. Giving in to these creatures and their seductions, or these entities themselves giving in to their impulses (perhaps violent?) in opposition to their romantic desires., and the mirror of these sorts of fantastical encounters in complicated human relationships. The ambiguity in the narrative makes it all the more compelling to me.

One of my favorite post-punk bands! From Britain. So ahead of their time. And I think you both nailed it. To me, tension and suspense and danger nearby equals fishing in a lake with leeches, at once relaxing but you never know if something unsettling might happen. They're the same! They actually formed in the late 70s but Ocean Rain was the first album I heard by them and it came out when I was 22 in the early 80s. Everybody that I knew played it constantly. It was all over the college alt music charts. Everybody in my post punk band had a copy and we played it constantly. My drummer was so obsessed with it he figured out the drum parts for every song on the album, and this album is one of those where literally every song on it is pure gold. It's sometimes melancholy but it's so beautiful and melodic and sometimes carefree and it's so driving and his voice is unique. And the songs are all over the map in terms of tempo and feel and lyrics. They were one of the best. If you ever have a spare 35 minutes, just hop on KZbin and search for Echo & the Bunnymen Ocean Rain and just listen through the playlist; it's nine songs. And most of them are between 3 and 4 minutes. Silver, the opening track, is quite uplifting, and there are others, Yo Yo Man is a mix of really uplifting and kind of tense and unsettling. Nocturnal Me and Crown of Thorns are dark and disturbing, but really catchy. I like this one as well for something upbeat by them, Seven Seas. These songs can really get stuck in your head for sure. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXuYYqmHZbB_eMk

I watched that Donnie Darko. Didn't think it was something I would like. But I did. shhhhhh. Don't tell. Yeah I agree, Underated. I would recommend as well to those who think it's just a freak show.

"Suspenseful". Perfect! The Bunnymen were so good at creating atmosphere and suspense. Its a truly theatrical piece of music with a real undertow to it. I loved The Bunnymen.

I loved this band back in the day and not giving my age away got to see them at the old Birmingham Odeon in 1983 lol. There is a real melancholy in Ian McCulloch's voice and anyone wanting to hear more should listen to their Crocodiles album.

Quintessential song for encapsulating that classic melancholy 80's vibe. "Seven Seas" from this same album also a favorite of mine.

Echo and the Bunnymen formed in Liverpool in 1978. The original line-up was vocalist Ian McCulloch, guitarist Will Sergeant, and bassist Les Pattinson. Pete de Freitas joined as the drummer in 1980. The early band used a drum machine that many people speculated to be "Echo" but this was denied by the band. Sadly in 1989 drummer Pete de Freitas was killed in a motorcycle accident while on his way to band practice.

From the classic Ocean Rain album - 'fishing where there's leeches' is pretty good, the album is over the top romantic, dramatic, with danger and darkness.

'80s alternative/Indie, new wave (darkwave)! Gothic rock/post-punk group. They are from the UK. I remember the video for this song gave a vampire vibe when I was a kid. Was only shown at night time, Cutting Edge show on MTV for alternative music. And 120 Minutes, similar show on MTV. And on college/underground/alternative radio stations. This group was during the late '70s, '80s and early '90s. Lex was right about the melancholy feel and Brad was right, too. Very atmospheric, ethereal music, too. If yall heard this song somewhere before, probably on Donnie Darko, lol. A movie made in the early 2000s, set in the '80s. Creepy movie, played lots of '80s new wave and alternative stuff on that movie. See more of Echo and The Bunnymen videos/songs "Heads Will Roll", "The Cutter", "Lips like Sugar", "Show of Strength", "Nothing Lasts Forever", " Bringing on the Dancing Horses", etc They were inspired by Velvet Underground (proto-punk group), Roxy Music, David Bowie, The Doors and others. Similar groups to them are Psychedelic Furs, Killing Joke, Sioxsee and the Banshees, The Smiths, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Clan of Xymox, Joy Division, The Cult (early stuff), The Church, The Chameleons, The The, Coldplay, Interpol, Arcade Fire, The Killers, Flaming Lips, Modern English, early U2 , and others. Yall need to do another new wave/post-punk stream.

I am always amazed at the way EATB can create songs that have so much dark tension, but with a tiny sliver of hopefulness. It’s why they are one of my very favorite bands of all time. The LP “Heaven Up Here” is a masterpiece. And I’d say they have about 30 songs altogether that are just perfect 10/10 songs in my book. No one lives in the crossroads of goth, new wave, glam rock & post-punk as well as Echo & The Bunnymen.
