0.25 cm Insulation is the same as the base clothing a duplicant wears, so the snazzy suit doesn't provide any benefit over the default outfit. The warm coat adds 0.8 cm to the base 0.2 cm a dupe has from just their skin to total 1 cm, which AFAIK makes them completely immune to Frosty Surroundings. You can see the numbers in their properties tab when you mouse over Insulation Thickness. On the status tab if you mouse over Body Temperature the tooltip shows the results of the heat transfer between the dupe and their environment, which uses this insulation value amongst others such as the Thermal Conductivity shown in the Properties tab. You can also see the current Homeostasis rate here, and if you mouseover Calories you can see that there is a cost for that homeostasis, albeit a pretty neglible one.
@salemprompthous38205 ай бұрын
And, afaik, this has not been changed with the Frosty update, it's been like this since homeostasis was first introduced. Warm Clothing giving 0.8cm is the only new addition to this, where when worn gives a perfect insulation aginst cold. Don't let your dupes wear warm clothes in a sauna, though. It has the opposite adverse effect (already lost two dupes myself 😊. Now, Only Freyja (for those interested, Frøya is the scandinavian spelling of the name, where the ø is pronounced as the "ea" in "early", from Norse mythology) and other Frost Immune dupes are allowed in there)

I like the way the new content forces the player out of their old strategies and habits! It feels like the colony is so resource-poor, given how little it has in the way of minerals... until you start to think of snow and ice as more than just water states. As the base progresses, the real question will become whether you end up trying to preserve it in its cold state with the new plants and critters, or if you let it melt and ship in the resources to convert it. Heat will threaten everything in a way it simply hasn't before. It'll be interesting to see.

Considering that dealing with plumbing water at freezing temperatures is a giant PITA, might it have made sense to arrange things the other way around; have your early heat sources near your living spaces, so that your future bathrooms and such can be non-freezy, and have your farms and ranches at a safe remove so they stay cold?
@salemprompthous38205 ай бұрын
Biggest difference between tiles and wood tiles: innate decor bonus of wood tiles is +15 across 3 tiles, where regular tiles have an innate decor of +5 across one single tile. No material that can be put into a regular tile comes close to what the wood gives in terms of decor (granite gives a +20% bonus, but still only across one tile reach) Tiles added to the Supply Closet down the line would make sense, wood tiles colored black/grey: there was a mishap with a grill here, so now it's a storage area 🤣

They work quite well! I went with an infinite storage for my chlorine until I got and set up the Dasha Saltvine box. If you've ever built an electrolyzer set-up, the process is quite similar. It's also got a much much higher base decor, +15 in a 3 tile radius, vs. +5 in a 1 tile radius for the normal tile. The game doesn't permit materials to modify the decor radius, and only permits the decor value to be modified via multipliers, so wood would have to have a +200% decor modifier to reach +15, and that would make it way too good in other usages. Basically, same reason plastic tiles and window tiles are separate buildings.

I think snow tiles are gonna be great for early on in the colony(first 1-200 cycles) but once temperature starts becoming a problem they seem pretty likely to be the source of quite a few problems if they melt, especially since it seems that for most colonies on this planet you will want to hover around -10 to 10 degrees. Just something to keep an eye out for later on but I do definitely like them so far on my current playthrough

Bammoths and Seals are basically your go-to for meat if you aim for Carnivore. Just a few seal drops will allow you to make enough of the new meat product to get by with less Bammoths. Mind you, I don't think the seals are fun to ranch. Better to evolve elderly wild ones.
@VShuricK5 ай бұрын
seals dont drop meat, they drop tallow. Bammoth req ridiculous amount of food (4 domesticated plums) and live for 200 cycles. Yep, they drop huge amount of meat, but its only 2100kcal bbq per cycle.

@@ekimmak pemmican worse then BBQ or Berry Sludge
@KaedysKor2 ай бұрын
@@VShuricK wat. BBQ is a 25% calorie gain over meat. It takes 3200 kcals of meat to make 4000 kcals of BBQ. Pemmican is a 62.5% gain (2600:1600). Yes, it's only +2 quality instead of +3, but in terms of _caloric efficiency,_ ie final food calories per raw input calories, Pemmican is wildly better than BBQ. And Berry Sludge doesn't help if you're aiming for Carnivore, in addition to being rather more difficult to farm. Oh, and if Carnivore isn't an issue, you can farm Plume Squash instead. Combine squash with tallow from the seals and you get a 35% calorie gain and a +3 meal quality. Plume Squash are 444.44 kcals per cycle, so 600/cycle if made into fries, meaning you need 3 plants per 5 dupes. And the Seals provide more than enough ethanol to feed the squash, too, each seal produces enough for 2.67 squash (and each Bonbon produces enough nector for 2 seals, so 2 bonbons = 6 seals = 16 squash. And then your Bammoths gives you all the phosphorite you need for the Pikeapples for your Flox farms, as well as huge amounts of clay for ceramic production, which means you've got food, wood, dirt, and ceramic all squared away from that setup (plus possibly some bonus nectar, which is an _excellent_ coolant, and makes great liquid locks, especially cold-temp ones with ethanol, _and_ gives you a source for plastic).

The tiles are separated because the _base decor_ is different. Each tile has a base decor value, which materials then _modify,_ multiplicatively. Regular tiles provide +5 decor in a 1 tile radius, which is then modified by the building material (so granite, which is +20%, makes it +6 decor in a 1 tile radius). Wood tiles are +15 decor in a 3 tile radius, which makes them _substantially_ better for decor than regular tiles. The game doesn't currently allow materials to provide fixed decor _offsets,_ just multipliers, and those multipliers apply to everything. It also doesn't allow materials to modify decor _radius_ with the material effects. So the benefits of the wood tile would not be possible if it were simply a material on the regular tile.
@sulpherstaer5 ай бұрын
I think the snow & wood tiles are separated so people can get used to the new material. If it were just behind normal tiles, would you have noticed the snow right away?
@Lightman03595 ай бұрын
They made wood tiles a separate object for playtest and balance reasons. in a normal colony with the DLC on, you have to research your way to them, they are in home luxuries, with comfy beds and plastic tiles. Like with all the other Tier 1 and 2 tiles [Snow Tiles and Basic tiles being Tier-0] and they had to make them a different object in the code. Just as normal tiles/pipes and insulated/radiant tiles/pipes of the same materials behave differently because of extra coding, potentially getting the buffs twice, actual programmers who know the ONI code can fill in the details. I am not a game coder, but I have made programs in quick basic, program moving lights for concerts, and DM for many different TTRPGS. My roommate is also working on a game in unity, so I understand the concepts, just not the actual code.

Separating out snow tiles makes sense to me; snow melts much earlier than any other material you might use for tiles, so being able to see at a glance which of them will melt at standard temperatures is important. As for the wood tiles being seperate, I agree it might be simpler to allow base tiles to use wood, but I think they wanted to make it require research; and I'm guessing they can't put "Build x tile out of y material" on the research tree due to technical limitations. Or I could be wrong. I ain't a game dev.
