Me personally, I love the way Zahn has taken Thrawn in the canon books. He's a lot more of an anti-villain rather than the actual villain he was in the HTTE trilogy. I feel like he's a lot more nuanced, and is a rare example of an Imperial that has some morals or at least isn't an Imperial die-hard. Him caring only about the Chiss Ascendancy and protecting it from the Grysks, while also caring about his own men and women of the 7th Fleet just makes him a lot more likeable, while still being the insane genius he is in the HTTE trilogy. Now even though he isn't a full on villain like in Legends, he will still do basically anything he has to to protect the Chiss. In regards to Canon book Thrawn, I think his goals now are to rebuild his forces, while also doing what he needs to in order to appease the Shadow Council at least until they're of no further use to him. I think he'll attack anyone who stands in his way to protect the Chiss, Imperial and New Republic alike. But his main goal should probably be to rebuild his forces. The only thing preventing him from taking his forces to the Chiss before was Palpatine. But now he's dead (for now) and he doesn't really care about Palpatine's Empire or his plans. Now, that's only if Filoni gave a single effort to look at what Zahn's been doing for the past 8 years, which of course he won't. Filoni unfortunately retcons anything he can in regards to books just to do it his way

EU was pretty discount sci-fi to begin with, at least most of it, Timothy Zahn was a gem.
@Bruhther8163 сағат бұрын
I still see Thrawn being just as evil even with the EU's later retcons. To me, making his motivations complex is part of writing him as an intelligent character, however it in no way vindicates either him or Palpatine. A large theme in the NJO is that there is such a thing as fighting the right battle the wrong way. Thrawn and Palpatine's way perhaps would've saved more lives during the initial invasion, and there is room to justify their philosophy as a result, but ultimately this can only be argued alongside justifying the Empire in its entirety. Personally, I believe that the Rebel Alliance were justified in resisting the Empire for the same reason that everyone, including the Empire, are justified in resisting the Yuuzhan Vong. So Thrawn is ultimately selfish, the only reason why he sides with Imperial oppression instead of Yuuzhan Vong oppression is because he sees the Empire as a power that can be reasoned with, whereas the Yuuzhan Vong are a power that explicitly cannot be reasoned with due to their zealous nature and irreconcilable worldview on technology and the beings who use it. Thrawn is only thinking about the Chiss Ascendancy and maintaining their autonomy, which probably makes him feel like a noble martyr for his people, but really only puts him on the level of any other nationalistic despot who believes that ends justify the means. So basically, I think saying that Thrawn was "white-washed" by the retcons, or otherwise implying that they make him less of a harsh villain is a bit off.
@marty212914 минут бұрын
Agreed. For me as a Rebel/New Republic fan, Thrawn was always the "inteligent villain", a bad guy without overly sadistic tendencies or wastefulness, but one who still has pre-emptive genocide among his signature ways of doing things. And him doing it for the Ascendancy doesn't really make the picture better because the that one takes the spot as one of those harsher xenophobic isolationalist regimes, and the only part that Thrawn saw as a problem was the honour-bound isolationalism that just forbade the "pre-emptive" part of pre-emptive genocide... Though I also think he actually was whitewashed by Zahn a bit in his later books (in the Hand of Judgement series) with the whole Nuso Eswa arc... And there was also an earlier shift in the portrayal of Imperial Remnant under Pellaeon when it was the anti-alien imperial hardliner who became the poster boys of imperial villainy, which put Trawn's image into oposition of the imperial villains even if he was no less ruthless...

3:21 I've never really understood this argument, why would it diminish? That's not even the same Thrawn, he still did everything he did in his campaign, we know how he acts, we know he'll do anything to achieve his goals, and unlike other imperials, if he's losing, he will retreat to fight another day (unless he gets offed by his own men... 👀), and we know how much the "good guys" feared him, just a baseless rumor that he could come back made everyone in the NR sht their pants Thrawn was not an Imperial fanatic, he knew how to weight his options, (he was a smart blue man... 👀), if he saw how much stronger the NR got post Dark Empire (or even Orinda Campaign), he would've at least thought about changing sides, he might have even tried to bring Pellaeon as well Or if him changing sides is too much for people, just make him go full Revan and use his Empire of the Hand (and bring Pellaeon as well, because that's how they roll apparently, lol)

I think "last minute change of heart ultimate sacrifice as only path to redemption Thrawn" might be the best way to reconsile the 'softer' and more simplistic/harsh Thrawns we see. You could even write it as an internal struggle he's having where he's sometimes delibrately bending his plans for compassion and other times he's decided now not to. He could progress further down the "there is no other choice" path to evil but then basically realise he's made a miscalculation and that doing the 'right' thing would logically make more sense, perhaps he has to go through a leap of faith that's not based on logic at all before this too which would be quite Star Wars-y. I do agree that an 'evil' Thrawn is perhaps better for the whole narritive as it provides a really good foil for the plot to have a genuinely terrifying opponent in the mix but I also think that having his *motives* be just as complex really adds a lot to the character and they have to be pretty lofty goals for someone as driven as Thrawn so the 'softer' writing aproach does actually make a lot of sense thus my idea to unify them as ultimately it really is true that in most circumstances cooperation is logically superior to conflict, yet there can also be logical reasons you cannot see/beleive this particularly if Thrawn doesn't have all the information about the New Republic's beleifs/leadership/intent

The mission took I believe like days in a row where he couldn’t do anything but work day and night. AND Palpatine was very much not happy with Thrawn at that time so he legit feared for his live a bit. Before getting teleported the fck out by Ezra. Man had like NO time or energy for these annoying ass rebels defeating an annoying ass incompetent gouvernante. And having to step in. I realize I'm not Eck, but I figured I'd toss my two-cents out there, just in case you're interested. :U Anyway, there's a lot of good places you could start with Legends. It really depends on what medium you're interested in, and what you're most-interested in learning about. Books and games are probably the biggest and easiest way to go, mostly because they're still mostly-accessible to a modern audience. If you want my suggestions: there's no better place to start than with the original Thrawn Trilogy (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command). I still see all three sold in bookstores and airport shops all the time, and they're legit some of my favorite books I've read in recent years. The TT was kind of the catalyst for the EU as a whole, so it works very well as a jumping-off point. There's also the X-Wing books, which I haven't read, but are presumably more focused on the rebellion/non-Jedi side of things. I've also seen them show up in bookstores and airport shops alongside the Thrawn books, which I personally take as a good sign.

#askeck If we assume the Thrawn plotline is still the main thing going on in the live action Mandoverse and we also assume they were truthful about Skeleton Crew tying into the rest of the Mandoverse on a deeper level than Vayne the pirate, could we see Thrawn potentially sieze At-Attin? If they plan on loosely adapting concepts from the original book trilogy, I can see an argument being made for the At-Attin mint taking the place of the Katana fleet of dreadnoughts if we go by that train of thought. I kind of expect the New Republic to treat the planet like a black site, I do not think they would want news of this place getting out to the wider galaxy, better keep it under wraps. Thrawn gets his hands on it somehow in some capacity for a time, serves the same leveraging power as him getting like 70% of Katana fleet. He's either gotta convince Shadow Council he's alive & worth investing in or he's gotta get his hands on war material, both vehicles & personnel. Not gonna do much with a busted ass ISD & a bunch of zombies.

Eeh, it's Filoni. He isn't exactly know for sticking to other people's stories, which is why I always found the idea that he'd be adapting the Thrawn trilogy unlikely. More likely he's going for an original story with the same time period and some same characters like he did with the Clone Wars.

Probably a hot take but I think Dave filoni dosnt respect star wars lore he just respects his creations for no reason he changed things in clone wars retconing really cool stories like changing the name of the sith homeland and the changes to the start of bad batch compared to the kanan novel there are other examples of him pointlessly retconing cool stories

Filoni will always stick to HIS infantile, primitive interpretation of a character, he doesnt care about what others did with them. And i highly doubt he has ever read any Thrawn-Book (or any book at all...), so i am 100% sure that Thrawn will try to attack the new Republic with other Remnants and more Nighttrooper-Zombies and then get defeated by Ezra, Hera and the Mandalorians (because they need to be in everything now i guess).... this is propably the star wars movie i've been LEAST lookin forward, and honestly: It could be cancelled and i wouldnt care. Propably would prefer if it was cancelled.

#askeck Do you think the Star Wars EU could have ever stayed canon after Disney's purchase of Star Wars? I think disney had no choice BUT to wipe the slate clean in order to have room to make Star Wars for the big screen and TV. Things like Chewies death in the EU was insane and the EU would have caused more problems than it would have solved for the Star Wars story group.
@razorburn6454 сағат бұрын
Uh son, they could absolutely have kept it and just trimmed it in places to fit together better or change certain things. They would have had tv series and movies for decades if they did and you whinging about Chewie's death when Disney killed off Han as well as Luke.
@MrBazBake3 сағат бұрын
This isn't Disney's fault. Lucas decanonized the EU in the early 90's the moment it was created. 😂 "Howard tries to be consistent but sometimes he goes off on tangents and it’s hard to hold him back. He once said to me that there are two Star Trek universes: there’s the TV show and then there’s all the spin-offs. He said that these were completely different and didn’t have anything to do with each other. So I said, ‘OK, go ahead.’” -- George Lucas, Total Film, May 2007 There is no slate to wipe. The EU was Elseworlds. It was Visions. It was licensed fanfiction for people to enjoy while Lucas came up with the REAL stories and ignored them. Edit: It is important to emphasize Lucas only let them have an EU because he promised Lucas could completely ignore it. There would never have been an EU if it actually mattered to the movies and TV. Lucas never would have let it exist if that were the case. So you can either be mad that they let you enjoy an EU that never mattered to the main stories at all, or you can be happy that George Lucas didn't stop the EU from existing and let you have a tiny corner of fun possibilities that were never going to matter to the main story. You can't do both. It's one or the other. 😐

@@MrBazBake That just makes the fact that Disney keeps stealing from it more pathetic. For something none Canon Disney sure loves using it's characters stories (in lazy way).
@simpletown3233 сағат бұрын
@razorburn645 buddy, im not talking about what Disney has done since they wiped the eu from canon. We all agree they fucked a lot of it up and the sequel trilogy is ass. If they kept Legends canon, then they'd really only be able to either make adaptations of stories that have already been told, or they'd have to write stuff that somehow fits in with all of legends. The other thing is, what's easier? Wiping all of the EU from canon and having a clean slate, and then over time bringing the legends stories back into canon; or, keeping all the eu canon and then meticulously putting out press releases decreeing which books, comics, games, etc are not canon? Let's also not forget that Lucas literally wrote story treatments for the sequel trilogy which would have likely conflicted with the EU. So from a business standpoint, NOT A FANBOYS standpoint, was wiping the eu from canon necessary? Id argue it was but then they went and fumbled every decision after the fact. Besides, if you love rhe EU, it's not gone anywhere, you can still enjoy it and have it be your headcanon. I don't even think Lucas considered any of the EU canon either
@razorburn6453 сағат бұрын
@simpletown323 Make stories already told? So. How many franchise have been made off of books? That didn't matter and as for the EU not going anywhere, only an imbecile would think that based on Disney's behavior.

I prefer Thrawn as an evil socio/psychopath just throwing his weight behind the empire for his own personal purpose. The whole "I'm trying to save my people" is blegh. Yes someone unique, with penchant for a twisted sense of ethics or whatever, but evil nonetheless, scary competent which is what makes him such a great archenemy. The penchant for all of these writers to make their bad guys compelling through some humanizing arc is just tiresome. Thrawn as a true villain character is far more compelling than whatever they tried to do later in the books. I like Rebel's Thrawn and Asoka Thrawn was good. More of that please.
@gaetan41643 сағат бұрын
Yeah I agree. He's a devoted fascist who deeply enjoys proving thay he is more intelligent and sophisticated than everyone else. He's evil but contrary to so many narcissistic villains he can put his feelings aside to some extent in order to get a bigger payoff and that's what makes him dangerous. I don't think he needs more motivation than that.

I think that dave Filoni is a fan of just key jingling and nothing else - Thrawn is smart and Lars Miklesen sound awesome, so show Thrawn acting and talking smart with Lars Miklsen's awesome voice. The character, much like hte series, has no point, so just things happening. Compare his tactics with any of the dumbest strategists in the entire series (canon and legends) and you will see that he is just a smart-sounding, dumb-person's idea of a smart person. regretable

There's no point to anything Star Wars anymore, there's no story point they're working towards, they're throwing everything at the wall and hoping something sticks but nothing is. All the bad writing, the sickening agenda, and the refusal to give people what they want are all making Star Wars bounce off that wall and right into the bin.

Honestly the whole series has gone way off the right path. EU content should be cannon cannon EU the world is upside down for starwars mando Season 3 was confirmation the cancer of the new trilogy is our projected path for the SW story and that means the future of this franchise is bleak at best.

You are upset that Disney refuses to BETRAY George Lucas by ignoring his wishes and making the EU matter to the movies and shows. Seems kind of rude to George here.
@injusticecombohub26202 сағат бұрын
@MrBazBake do you have your head in the sands? Not only is your argument way off topic it's just wrong. George's ideas of the direct future of SW as well as EU content were all thrown out by disney immediately after they bought it. Disney has betrayed George in every way. George was literally conned into selling sw to a company he thought he could trust. As at the time, there really wasn't any reason not to trust disney. I'm not gonna launch into a 4-hour debate with you about this. There are countless reasons. I just wanted to share what's wrong with this franchise with everyone and that's disney was afraid of their own lore when they bought SW, they inherited legends which was GREAT however messy we can all agree. Disney didn't want to take time to analyze what's there and accept it / assign what's cannon from it. No, they took the lazy way and wiped the board. Now we have this mess and don't bring up george his work is done and built upon. It's the content and legacy were talking about that spawned from his work. We are not really talking about his work directly. George had Lil to do with EU content as he wanted sw to become self-sufficient when allowing other authors and creators freedom to come in and add to his franchise of lore that's what the EU is: the collection of lore that spawned from his work. And Disney has taken it dumped gasoline on it and lit a match. They robbed us of countless stories and don't say they didn't as they literally did. The proof of this is literally everywhere on the internet. Just look at kylo Ren. This character should have been Darth Caedus. That's 1 of a million examples of the negative impact Disney's new trilogy / surrounding lore had. A trilogy mind you that's completely woke garbage written by a collection of ignorant money hungry directors that had no clue what they are painting over top of. It amounts to what's basically the worst bought and paid for fan fiction ever published. And I'm not even fully mad at the dumb directors. They're a cog in the machine a very prominent set of cogs as the public has subjected them all tk ridicule for the last 3 movies being released just like the actors in the trilogy they are held accountable when they shouldn't like the actor for rose gets harrased for no reason. I'm mad if anything with people like kathleen Kennedy and bob Igor. As well as the people they have directly brought in. These are the people that have ruined SW. It's been people like Bob and kathleen and their direct colleagues that have made the poor decisions I don't agree with. And it may Not even be them they are just the heads of this scene the the public can see. For all we know it's the Suits making these decisions of profit. Disney's main goal by axing legends was to establish a clear cannon. But that ship sailed when they began retconning their own lore and stealing / re writing legends content. They show us the real reason to axe legends was laziness and ignorance to the great medium they had access to. The people at Disney that are truly in charge of how to handle SW after buying it made all decisions out of a goal for profit. The last thing Disney has cared about is giving us true SW content and telling a story we can care about. All they care about is baking more and more quick products that they can pump out to us for easy monetization money on their new streaming platform or maybe just maybe one day make a palatable movie. But reviews be damned as long as they make some money!. That's Disney they don't give 2 shits about any ip the own besides how they can profit. I mean this is a business profit is needed. Though producing legends novels and comics as movies and TV shows would have been way more lucrative than anything Disney has produced to date. Like a darth bane trilogy. Or a plageous movie. Cast keanu as revan already, like Disney is retarded; this ain't rocket science.
