@@toddkes5890 I'm just talking military effectiveness. And I know it's a movie, where theme and symbolism are more important. But honestly, There will likely be some truly combat-effective elements in that fleet. From Local militia defense-forces to pirates. Jamming the skies with civilian ships that don't know how to communicate and coordinate in battle, aren't equipped or trained for it, are unpredictable and prone to panic and which will spend more time damaging each other and getting in the way than anything else will mostly serve to reduce the effectiveness of the combat-proficient ships and reduce the odds of victory. Unless the plan is to destroy the Star Destroyers with a hell-rain of flamimg junk. Basically, this here plan is most likely to go about as well as when it was used on a Futurama episode by Brannigan. Truthfully, there ARE ways to salvage that plan. The best way to make a fighting force out of that fleet would be to break it up into battlegroups of the combat-ready ships and personnel, with some of the specialist ships and pers. for support, training the others and refitting the salvageable ship over time. But that's a strategy for a guerrilla war, not a last-stand battle. If we MUST go that route, well, the movies have been perhaps suggesting latent force users exist throughout the galaxy. In the end, EVERYONE is connected to it. So have a force user commune with the entire makeshift fleet, enabling them to coordinate subconsciously and giving the civilians subconscious access to the battle-competence of the veterans. (A similar tactic has been used by both the Emperor and Thrawn in novels.)

@@williambell3304 For what I know, every ship has it's own communication device, so they can comunicate with each other, and the plan was to take down every crusier they could before they could leave the planet, so other than spacing out to cover as much space from the final order's fleet, there isn't much need to have actual irl battle logistics and actual overly complicated strategies to what's supposed the star wars equivalent of literally everybody against you at the same time, specially considering that they didn't have that much time to get a better plan than just swarm them as best as they could, and the said fact that they only have two enemy objectives fairly distinctive to shoot at. And i doubt about them panicking, bc to be fair, if you decided to actually going from wherever you where at the moment to a planet nobody has visited before, and actually join a bunch of people to face against the first order for a last fight for the galaxy, then you should at least have an idea of what you were getting into, and if it was worth to actually go and join this battle. This people was here because they actually wanted to help no matter what. But once again, to be fair whatever their plan was before arriving, or if they had a more complex tactic either for the small civilian ships, or the big bulky cargo ships, it could've been better explained if this battle had more screentime than the 2 minutes it got from the 2 and a half hour movie it was meant to close.

The Battle of Exegol wasn't designed to sell merchandise because we know it was designed to be cheap. Would make sense to have waves, not only is blue on blue a big issue with one giant wave but being able to manuver would be difficult, most of these ships, even the combat ones, tend to use speed and manuvers in combat vs the more line ship oriented star destroyers, on top of that having a reserve of several waves let's you A. Drop more ships in to flank opponents with precision jumps, B. Take advantage of false pauses in the battle (IE wave 1 falls back, they assume they won and began damage control, rearming/refueling fighters and even larger ships before they send them out to burn the galaxy when suddenly wave 2 gets a slightly less effective advantage then the first surprise wave and C. A strategic reserve if the plan fails and you need to adapt (IE "this is wave 1 leader, be advised our intiligence was wrong, there were additional escort wings of fighters based planetside that committed to the fight, recommend you send part of wave 2 to focus on ground based hangers and have the start of wave 3 screen for small craft before committing wave 4s larger ships")
@robertagren93602 жыл бұрын
@@josephmontanaro2350 No. Waves would just make new problems that the ships behind are able to accelerate into the ships in front because you can't break in space. Space itself is a big place and they had to shrink all ships into one movie screen. Why use waves when you could have everyone fighting at the same time. Waves means every wave behind it isn't fighting. Waves worked for human infantry because we have limited stamina. You're thinking that the ships are humans where you pull back the weaker wave. You can't pull back any ship and waves is irrational. In space you just want a line formation and let every ship shoot at the others. Ships in space are cavalry and you're not riding a horse backwards or able to turn around. You get stomped to death by the horsemen behind you. Waves is worse than having all ships in one basket. Because you let the opponent pick each ship after another.

All the while Snoke's position in the trilogy is outright contradicted by having him be created by Sidious somewhere in between TRoJ and TFA. What a mess of a trilogy.

I see the Eravana complaint and I agree with the possible usage, but also consider this. Anyone familiar with Elite:Dangerous could probably see the similarities to the Type-X line of ships. They're generally bulky haulers serving the same role as a freighter in Star Wars. However they can not only be outfitted with weapons, albeit at a disadvantage against similarly sized specialty or multi-role ships, but there are also combat variants of them. The Type-6 Transporter is an early game medium hauler which doesn't fare well in combat (probably more akin to the Quad Jumper here), but it has a version called the Keelback which incorporates more hull strength, additional thrusters, a ship-launched fighter bay (by far the cheapest/smallest ship you can get one on, and SLFs are a huge dps dealer), and possibly a few other different more useful internal compartments or slightly different weapon placement. It's been a few years so I'm a little foggy on the details. I remember that the lore reason for the Keelback was to have a more armed/armored version of the Transporter since there is a whole piracy thing and they wanted something that looked like the civilian version that could fight back. The Type-7 is probably closest to the GR-75 here. It's essentially a medium transporter in terms of specs but has a large ship frame. It's got great durability & cargo space but is absolutely not suited for combat. Hauling & Mining is another story though, thing is great for mid game if that's the route you're going. No combat variant here. The main one relevant to this is the Type-9 Heavy (the analog to the Eravana here). It's one of the largest ships you can get and feels like a cement mixer when flying it. But it's insanely tanky, has an insane amount of storage space to haul goods, and can be outfitted as a turret fortress and also can have SLFs. It's variant, the Type-10 Defender, was introduced during a story arc that required a lot of militarization. It's faster in every regard, has better/more weapons placements (I think this gets it the highest potential dps depending on loadout), highest hull armor of all the ships and really high shields, and keeps the SLF. It's literally a flying fortress, but other stuff can still fly circles around it. But you can literally just sit there and let your auto-turrets & SLFs do the dirty work and not worry.

I'd suggest that a possible canon reason for a lot of the less useful ships at the battle was simply that when the call went out, when Lando told the Galaxy what was at stake, pilots and ship owners of all walks felt an obligation to contribute. That meant even those whose ships weren't very maneuverable or fast or well-armed decided that they simply couldn't sit out out and had to go and do whatever they could to help defeat Palpatine and the Empire. Even if it meant sacrificing themselves, providing cover for other ships, kamikaze runs, etc.

Cargoships can actually have a lot of usefull uses in a spacebattle. They could: -Carry cargo, ammo, fuel and resuply (obviously). -Carry fighters, tugs, rammers and small ships. -Carry mines, homing missiles and battle droids. -Carry space marines and naval infantry. -Be a command, Control and Intelligence ship. -Act as hospital ships. I would like to point out something about tugboats in the real world..... they are INCREDIBLY agile. They need to be in order to do their job. This is why tugboats look fat in comparison to fast ships (the wider beam relative to their length enhances agility while impacting top speed, fast ships look more like pencils, very long and thin, but having that huge length means it has to push against all that water when turning, and they are more susceptible to rolling over, also helping to limit their agility). Hell some of the most agile warships ever built were the round so-called pancake ships built for Imperial Russia (agile for their size and time period that is). So if the quad jumper there is meant to be an analog to tugboats, they should be surprisingly agile.

I generally don't defend TROS in anyway, but I can see several of these ''useless'' ships actually serving a purpose. As this is potentially ''the end'' of the galaxy, several of these ships could be there simply to add numbers for the resistance. More ships equals more targets, and while the the empire(I actually can't even remember what name they went by in this movie lol) would try to focus the bigger threats, it would be really hard to prioritize just on firepower with that many targets. Several of these ships could also probably serve as rescue vessels as well, picking up survivors from damaged ships etc.

I'd honestly have preferred more visible emphasis on common ships and less recycled capital ships. To truly emphasize that the galaxy as a whole has realized they must take a stand, and with one voice say, "No more." The common people, the smugglers, the planetary militias, and yes, a few capital ships that had scattered to fight another day. Oh sure they'd suffer hideous casualties, especially the first handfuls to arrive, but as the trickle became a flood, the Final Order (Blech!, just so try hard) would find that their efforts to grip the galaxy with ultimate force had backfired. Considering the lack of shields on Exegol, ships would be able to punch well above their weight, and most of them wouldn't have lasted much longer with shields anyway. A fighter from a planetary militia or bounty hunter could go straight to killing cannons and bridge crews. That heavy freighter may have been beyond Han's means to modify, but I could see that space being used to house some salacious systems. It would be difficult and you'd need either prolific salvage of battlefield or enormous investments in the black market. The pocket carrier would be easier and more obvious, but you said that one, so I had to consider cut down warship cannons and a bunch of power supplies. Or packing the cargo pods with mines, missiles, or torpedoes. Also, throwing cargo if you're genuinely so lacking in means after getting this clunker, yet still determined to do the right thing. I disagree that many fighters wouldn't have hyperdrives. This is the New Republic era after all. I could easily see pirates, militias, bounty hunters, concerned citizens, criminal groups, and actual New Republic forces having hyperdrive equipped fighters. The tugs could drag debris around to inflict more damage, they could pull the stupid star destroyers out of position, and they could help friendlies maneuver, especially if friendlies were damaged. I'd assume some of the GR75 weapons were stock for self defense purposed, and they just modded them with what they had to best fit what they needed. Yes, they'd get hammered, but I could see them showing up out of dedication and at least drawing fire for a few precious seconds. Museum owner/collector wanted to make history instead of study and store it. Also, a lack of shields would be less detrimental here. Unless it was modded for urban combat or turned into a one salvo missile/torpedo boat, the most I can see the bus doing is landing marines by virtue of being ignored for more important targets. Which could actually be useful. Or maybe use it to release chaff.

One purpose of having excess ships, even unarmed ones, is simply to add extra targets and soak up some fire. If there are 20 targets coming at you but only 3 are dangerous to you, you have find and focus on those 3 and hope none of the others have any surprises in store. If one important ship is in danger and needs cover, another ship (something large and tanky, but lightly manned) can physically shield them to give them time recover. In Halo, the UNSC did this with a medical station in the first space battle they actually won against the Covenant. 'Course I would imagine the Galaxy fleet very disorganized for the most part. But it still would have been a lot for the Sith fleet.

An interesting thing I noticed on Wookieepedia states this about the Baleen-Class Heavy Freighter: "Baleen-class freighters were about 400 meters long and were quite clumsy, but were capable of moving large amounts of cargo across the galaxy every day, and consequently, were essential to commerce. Their forward compartment could be opened in transit and used to salvage items found drifting in space, even entire starships. Built in orbital shipyards, ships of the class were designed to never enter a planet's atmosphere, instead they were docked at space stations and transfer yards to load and unload cargo." So, I wonder how the resistance would have modified them in such a hurry to enter the atmosphere. However, I do think it makes sense that they would act as carriers of sorts for this battle, carrying ships just like you mentioned.
