Free flight and free feed is paramount for Eclectus. Food is never limited and focus is put on variety and everything in moderation. This is a snapshot of a potential menu for a day- quantities are not specific. Some days it is as simple as scant 1/2 cup of chop twice a day with no skewer- or as complicated as fresh baked birdie bread. Note* when I say tablespoon, I am referring to the large spoon in my drawer- it is not a specified size.
Chop recipe includes:
Zucchini, red peppers, spicy peppers (more capsasin the better), Green Beans, Bok choy, Yams, Sweet potato, Carrots, Broccoli, Cauliflower, * cooked beans- (please make sure they are cooked through! and use in strict moderation- beans are not an ideal food for eclectus), Guava, Papaya, Cranberries, Jackfruit, Pineapple, Cherries, Apple, Strawberries, Blueberries, Blackberries, Mango, Plantains, Coconut, Dragon fruit, Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Plums, Figs, Apricots and a selection of herbs and spices like cinnamon, ginger and cilantro. Preparation details can be found on the website.

@@phyllisbass6378 both of mine would rather walk/saunter. I have a wooden floor so I hear the click click click of their nails on the wood. My female sprints everywhere... the male is more judicious with speed

Ours gets the occasional chicken bone and really enjoys it. Of course mainly veg, bird biscuits and fruit. Hard to get him to eat veg though but he is offered it every day. Plumage is very good recently. No grey feathers. Basically anything we eat, he gets a taste. Oh, but no bread or rice.

First, your home is stunning!! You’re welcome! …I share a lot of your habits with my beautiful boy, Aero…feeding, freedom etc…so kudos for being such a great mom! Just one thing I see missing, a shower perch. It suctions to the shower wall, it’s adjustable, and then you can shower with him. My boy loves to shower with me…he gets drenched too 😅

Arent you ever scared that he’ll fly into the windows?
@ElegantEclectus
@ElegantEclectus 2 жыл бұрын
No, never. Parrots are extremely intelligent more so than even some small children. Are you afraid that a child is going to run into glass? No. If your parrot is well-adjusted and understands that you can’t fly through glass they are more than capable of actually seeing the glass. And therefore do not pose a risk to run into glass unless there’s some unforeseen circumstance.

I see you have a LOT of windows and since Dimitri is free flighted, does he ever smack into one? Do you have them marked in some way to prevent collisions or did you train him in some way to avoid the windows? Also, potty trained? Since he has such a wonderful life of freedom, is he trained to potty in one area, so you don't have to follow behind and clean behind him? I'll be getting my first Eclectus this fall and am so excited!

Eclectus are intelligent (like a toddler). Naturally, once they understand what windows are through simple training- they will not crash into them (like children). However it is about your birds acclimation and personal health- the pectoral muscle are the largest in the body, and are required to control flight along with a multitude of other muscles. (Think of a elderly person who easily trips, versus a young person who does gymnastics). They can fully comprehend spacial awareness after Initial training and require flight to be healthy or risk organ damage later in life. Just like toddlers- potty training is not on their menu per say- (like toddlers). Dimitri has learned ‘stations’ and will deficate after landing on those areas. They do know, not to drop on humans, flat surfaces or food areas, so you can use that as a training assistance to have a cue word. In this house, we use ‘cheesa’ (Greek), as a potty command. But with all parrots- you will spend hours a day cleaning up after them.

How is the noise level of a male ekkie? Also will there be a difference if I handfeed the ekkie myself vs getting them fully weaned? I have no experience hand feeding, but the breeder said it will help with our bonding and that he will give me a care guide. But I'm super hesitant and I don't think he should release a young bird to someone who doesn't know how to handfeed! Love love your vids will support your patreon!

Are you comparing the noise level to male versus female? or to other species of parrots? Male Eclectus are going to be louder than females- it is in their nature to communicate often with the rest of the flock, while females spend most of the year in the nest. The amount of vocalization depends on the home environment and the mental and physical health of the bird so it can drastically vary... If comparing to other medium sized big bodied birds (amazons or afircan greys) I have found them to be comparable, maybe slightly more quiet- but again there are so many variables. I have both hand fed, and received weaned birds. When breeders make statements like that, it is most often than not because they dont want to go through the long, expensive and somewhat dangerous process of weaning. Weaning Eclectus is emotionally taxing in many cases as you need to closely monitor the weight- and with your attachment level (and their personalities) they will play you like a fiddle! There is no proper commercial hand rearing formula for ekkies, so it is important that they are weaned as soon as possible which can be difficult with that level of attachment. However many fear they will be weaned onto pellets (which are not appropriate for ekkies- especially the young ones). I would say that a higher rate of clients who finished the hand feeding and rearing have had behavioural implications (like screaming, fussy eaters, and unhealthy attachments to where they develop self mutilation from separation issues). Ekkies will by nature bond to their owner very quickly if they are given the proper care- especially males. So the idea that it will 'strengthen your bond' especially for Ekkies seems to be like a way of getting money quicker... however on the other hand, (if you are willing to not go to work), you can control what items they are weaned on- if you are willing to potentially create some behavioural issues that need to be addressed early on.
