I've been surprised how little coverage this topic gets, so this video fills an important void. The kick is there to keep the tempo, but to me as a listener, the hi-hats and the snare are what actually drive the track.
@EClipChannel Жыл бұрын
Well yes. Kick and bass are way harder to set up. As dealing with low frequencies is way complicated because of their nature. Hi-hats and snare cover much smaller parts of a track, and also are in high frequencies so it’s much easier to set them up!

I also use a very similar approach on the top end section but an important element on top of that, for me, is clariphonic that gives a lot of presence and a pleasant kind of glue that helps a lot to stand out in a mix

Hey Marko, thanks a lot for showing and explaining this structure, great tutorial as always. The different possibilities to easily control, add or reduce some energy, are amazing and very inspiring. Tbh I'm frequently struggling finding the best volume to place the percussion in the mix. When I adjust the elements to a similar level like the rest of the track, my ears often disagree, but the other way round, when i like the sound, and see the difference in volume in the mixer, i don't trust my ears, too :))) Do you have any tips?

Best psy-trance drums tutorial! What VST ,etc do you use to create your various drums & percussions? Can they be created with Kick 2 like with the Kick, or even with Serum?
@EClipChannel Жыл бұрын
Depend from what you want to create. Hi-hats are the best from certain noise oscialtors, drum machines etc. whike snare you can do with Serum and other synts, even the hi-hats.

Hi Eclip! You are the Single Shot Master so i have a question. Producers often say that a track sounds more professional when all the sounds are in "the same room", meaning that they send all their sounds through the same Reverb on a Send Channel. That way all the Single Shot Sounds would have the same Reverb/Room. Is that Nonsense or do you do it that way too? Thanks alot, appreciate.
@EClipChannel Жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s nonsense, everybody has their way of working. In my case, that is not possible, as each sound requires different reverb settings to get the best out of it. For example, high-pitch sounds and low sub-impact cannot have the same reverb settings, as they won’t have the same effect.

Thanks for sharing your method. Question, are you placing a close hat on every kick throughout the tune?
@EClipChannel Жыл бұрын
Mostly there's one hi-hat on bounced with the kick. The hi-hat becomes a part of the kick. As pitched sinewave only somehow always sound terrible on the high frequencies and this way I cover that bad sounding part of the kick!

How do you deal with Soothe latency? It doesn't affect the drums attack?
@EClipChannel Жыл бұрын
I didn’t notice latency. Not sure which DAW you use, but I know that Ableton has a huge issue with latency and delay compensation.
@rivermessner7890 Жыл бұрын
Would you ever use a transient shaper to dull the transients down on the fast hats? Or stick to limiter mostly
@EClipChannel Жыл бұрын
I would use it for other occasions, not for the hi-hats. I love limiting or saturating hihts. I use a lot of enveloping shaper, which is a Cubase transient shaper integrated into channel strip.

what about levels? how loud are my hats suposed to be compared to the kick (wich is my reference since it is the loudest element)
@EClipChannel4 ай бұрын
@@qilinpsy how do you measure hi-hats? How loud is the transient? There is no way you can measure and use math to level anything! It must be done by the ears.
@EClipChannel4 ай бұрын
@@qilinpsy beside that, I wouldn’t know how loud your hi-hats should be in particualr track. Some tracks sound better with less hi-hats, some sound better with louder ones. It all depends from your taste, desire and need!

hey would you recommend to have the closed and open hh in the same key as the end of the kick and the bass line, to clue them together?
@EClipChannel Жыл бұрын
Hi-hat in the key??? Hi-hats cannot be in any key! If we talk about standard hi-hat that is most likely made of noise and noise cannot be tonnal.
@slimproge1 Жыл бұрын
Show the levels my Master! :)
@EClipChannel Жыл бұрын
What would you like me to show you? Peaks? RMS? Talking about levels in number does not have any sense, especially for hi-hats. it will depend on the shape of the hi-hat. How loud is the transient, body, and type of hi-hat, is it a sharp one or a shaker one? It doesn't have the sense to talk in numbers. Mixing needs to be done by ears!
@slimproge1 Жыл бұрын
@@EClipChannel It was important for me to relate the drums in their entirety (hat, OH, snare etc.) only to the K&B group. sorry, I didn't specify, but Marko's answer given by you is already sufficient. I send to the whole family Best wishes from Poland!

can you use volume automation to control hi hat peaks instead of saturation,clippers or limiters?...wouldn't that be most transparent?
@EClipChannel Жыл бұрын
No! Transients and peaks are part of the hi-hat waveform, you can bring the volume up or down with the fader only of the whole sample, and it will not change the shape. With clipper, saturation, or limiter, the waveform will be changed! When I say peaks, I mean on the peak of the hi-hat or the transient, not on the measurement unit!
@EClipChannel Жыл бұрын
@@molandsonsmotors9690 if you want to EQ the hi-hats then yes. If you want to reduce the transients, then use a plugin that is doing that!
@truthbetold2012 Жыл бұрын
@@EClipChannel in ableton I can automate the volume for just the peaks in an audio clip to level the waveform and when I render it the resulting waveform sounds much better than what the saturater,clipper or limiter does.
@EClipChannel Жыл бұрын
@@truthbetold2012 that’s an envelope, not the automation in Cubase, and yes, you can do that on individual elements, but it will not glue a bunch of channels to sound as one. Also, it is easier to use a clipper or limiter than writing the automation or changing the envelope shape on each channel. Imagine you “automate” the transient on 6 channels, and then you realize you didn’t do enough or you did too much. You would need to change the shape on all of them again. While with a limiter/clipper, you just need to change 1 knob and you are done.
