Yes. People in the 3d printed gun community are investigating this heavily. As an example some one was looking into cutting slots for charging handles in metal receivers and I was looking into using it to cut locking lugs into a barrel/bolt (I never got the more advanced stuff to work for some reason and rn I'm too busy with more pressing stuff. But something mildly related is ZURAD engineering. He is designing a desktop machine tht will let you cut any shape into metal on your desktop.

Adding an on/off pulse should in theory significantly help surface finish and may also speed up your cutting process by allowing time for the waste and gas to clear. Also making sure your waste is routed up will help you clear gas.
@Ratkill3 жыл бұрын
What kind of pulse duration do you mean? Like 50% duty 1 sec, 10hz, 60hz, or 200hz?
@ZURAD3 жыл бұрын
@@Ratkill Really any pulse should help. 50% duty is a good starting point. 60hz sounds right. It doesn't have to be super technical as you're never going to accidentally approach a pulse rate that would truncate cutting distance. Just give the reaction time to relax, that's all.

Just a tip for anyone who is attempting this, I got poor quality round stock for my boring and chambering operation from Home Depot. Spend some extra time and money to get a true round piece of steel. The profil of the Home Depot rod was egg shaped, and this caused my barrel to be cut egg shaped.it is still functional, but for not much more $ you can shoot for perfect.
@agcast3 жыл бұрын
Good information. Maybe should check Lowe's they usually had a better selection of steel and for cheaper prices than Home Depot, at least for me. I might buy one of those egg shaped ones tho to see how much it can through off accuracy

AG Cast measuring my rifling valley to valley = 9.30mm, 9.28mm, 9.22mm. Although my chamber ended up round because I oriented the chambering tool off by 90* every other cut, the cuts seem to be off by about 80 thousandths of a mm

nice, ive tried this with sort barrels useing just a seupt like when you etch logos in steel, just deep etch it.. you have your etching jig printed on plastic film like a normal etching but you stick it in the bore.. ive also just acid etched rifling... dip the while barrel in nail polist or etchers resist and then push through an undersized rifling button with oil on it and it will scratch off the resist in a spiral pattern.. you can make a lil spring loaded one with hacksaw blades to do the cutting.. you can etch 50 at a time if you want.. or just do it the ol fashond way and drive a button through

I've been wondering if this process can be easily modified to do bottleneck cartridges like 5.7 or TOK. the only way i can see it working is if you add another step to mill out the step down with a reamer
@agcast3 жыл бұрын
Don't see why not but it would be more challenging to make proper tooling, the bigger problem would be printing something capable of using bottlenecked cartridges since most designs are simple blow back. Perhaps its just nobody has really bothered to try because of that

Check your tooling and it depends on how much weaker. Also then try shorter cutting intervals where you have problems

@@agcast Ok, so it turns out it was the pump, the tooling was fine. The weaker pump could only move 500L p/h and the new one I bought could move 900L p/h this upped the pressure and it did the job.
