You're right. I do have some space at home for a garden. A neighbor of mine has recently grown some rather large tomatoes in her back yard, so I will have to try this! :D

I like this idea. Provided it's kept to a small community. Can you imagine how much space we would need if everyone had to do this, to grow their own food?
@Rattielicious11 жыл бұрын
for a family its ok, for a small community it is even better I agree. Of course it is not impossible to do this solo, so much easier and lovely to do it with others. It also helps split costs for materials too, plus the security of diverse skills/abilities and ideas to make things more productive and if things go wrong.
@TJtheHuman12 жыл бұрын
Well around here it is one acre per a family. We also have long winters. Q. If you grow all your own food what time of year is best to start gardening? A. You never stop.
@ZombieTex112 жыл бұрын
There are some places where you can still do this in the States. No where near a city, especially any major cities. There are some rural counties that have little to no code restrictions.
@Rattielicious11 жыл бұрын
Christopher, if moving out of urban/suburban area is out of the question for you, perhaps look into aquaculture, horticulture, vertical farming for some ideas. Those are a lot better for smaller spaces. Also check bylaws in regards to keeping chickens etc depending if you have at least some space for them.

I was thinking the same thing. This is not a reasonable thing for those of us who occupy urban spaces. But roof top gardens would be a very good idea. We should also have the gov subsidize the production of gardens in, on, or around public buildings---schools, universities, fire dep, etc. what do you think?

Lucas, in the fifties housing was so different. A family could buy a lot build a single level home and as the babies arrived, add an edition. A house and lot could be as low as four thousand dollars. Even at wage rates, a person had a chance to own a home. Today, with rules and regulations, corporate building, the rare chance to purchase a lot, you are tied to a hefty mortgage without assurances you will ever actually own your home.

Please answer.

It's one thing to have incredible accomplishments. It's another thing entirely to be an admirable or honorable person. From what I've seen, people become so enamored with his accomplishments, they neglect to find out who he really was as a man. As a man he was despicable, cruel, violent, and closed minded. He was a killer who fell into an incredible set of circumstances. Circumstances so incredible, others stopped seeing him for what he really was, and only saw what they wanted to see.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2Spcp94rr6hpac Wales, England. "Eco=Homes: Living the good life" As we advance in technology and there is more "noise" and less "peace and quiet" --as a result of increasing movement towards ALWAYS being connected thru and because of technology-- Question: "Will there be some segments of our society who will want the genuine "closeness", a more genuine sense of community and the "peace and serenity that comes from the quiet" of NOT always "being connected", of distancing themselves as individuals and families from being engaged in the hectic "busy-ness" of "modern" life? In so many words "Are we maybe returning to a "simpler" lifestyle of our great-grand parents who pioneered this country farming and toiling on the land? As I ponder these thoughts, it reminds me of the Farewell comments made by my British peer on the Joint Task Force. "You Americans WORK. You're ALWAYS working . There IS NO dobut that you are the HARD-EST working people I've ever met. Sometimes it's alright to slow down to have a noon tea and scone (referring to the tradition in his country of drinking tea and scones). To stop by a coworkers cubicle and say "Hello, let's go downstairs and have a coffee. Or at noon take a half hour break and go for a run with a coworker."

check out biointensive method by john jeavons. its basically permaculture, but a system which was created from the initial question of 'what is the minimum amount of land needed for sustainably growing a fully nutritious diverse diet feeding people year-round?' - the study & founding of this system led to the answer of 1000 square feet of growing space, up to 4000 (10th of an acre), even that's hilariously small.

The Tiny House Movement runs up against arcane and greedy zoning and planning boards all the time. Living small is very hard to do when it is a fight all the way. I think it will have to change as I see the movement to mobile homes and small and very small homes with out buildings and chickens or goats & gardens are going to be much more common. We must dump a lot of the restrictions and prepare for a very different future.
@boosomentity13 жыл бұрын
it's good to see these projects coming to fruition, low tech redundancy systems must be integrated in to our dependent countries in order to redress the balances lacking in our economy, it is important however not to dismiss all the systems we have in place and not get carried away with junk science pertaining to eco-politics such as the farce surrounding carbon emissions which is not only the least pressing issue over our environment, at only 0.036% atmospheric concentration it's in demand.

I appload the low carbon initiatives, it has to happen. But let's embrace sustainability in in the widest possible sense and be sensitive to the Welsh language that's still a living language spoken by people everyday in Pembrokeshire. I'm sure people at Lammas do take this on board, allthough that doesn't come over in the film. Ancient languages can unlock secrets in the land if we embrace it. Lives are richer if we share, explore and learn. These great projects can't just be ex-pat enclaves with an assumption that they have more to teach the locals than the other way around. We learn from each other and sustainability needs to be seen more holistically by those who claim to be it's guardians or it will inevitably fail.

Then you're not really looking. Asthma, obesity, soil degradation, poverty, famine, energy costs/distribution, resource wars, net energy losing supply chains, loss of community, theft of the commons, lack of bio diversity, growing emissions, etc... All the resources and efforts went to compete the western countries, so the state could maintain it's existance. We had no social life. Everything was directed, so socitey moved as a whole. There were dos and dont's. We had our own army; our education and healthcare for free, a big industry, but it was poor quality. Anyway, we managed to pay our country's debt at beginning of 1990. Socialism and communism were close to North Correa, nothing like western socialism.

It`s also overpopulation and super low interest rates which have driven up housing prices. Having lots of babies is something that the righteous eco activists, obsessed with global warming, rarely want to mention. Doing so would be politically incorrect.

Well, i'll tell you about communism in eastern Europe (Romania) a little: we had, no houses of our own, no cars, food; heating, clothing, other main necessity goods were short. The great majority of us(70-80%) were low payed empolyees of the state. There was only one party to rule the country. Bassically, everything was owned by state and managed by the gov. There were no foreign mercendise. There was no unemployed, except some categories (healt, detention, retired).

I don't agree that this is just human nature. This guy was a monster by any social standards. I will say, however, that it is within the nature of socialism. In socialism, if you're not with the program, you have to go. This is why so many tens of thousands had to die in Cuba's "revolution". This is why so many MILLIONS had to die in Russia and China and Vietnam and North Korea.

Where did you get those quotes? I have read several biographies on Che Guevara and never heard any of those, or the accusations you attached to them. Che executed what he believed to be traitors, and political enemies, former henchmen of the ruthless Batista regime in Cuba. And yes, he seemed to rather enjoy it, but that was the harsh reality of a war torn Latin America.
